This is the kind of place the locals actually play. The kind of place that offers regular Sunday champagne brunches and New Year's Eve parties in the clubhouse. Mesquite's low green fees bring them in (under $100 even in Palm Springs' ultra expensive peak season). Its mountain backgrounds and golf along the bottom of a streambed are what bring them back.
Mesquite Golf and Country Club in Palm Springs isn't a long course by any stretch of today's standards. It comes in at 6,312 yards from the back tees. Locals find that fits just right. Again, it's Palm Springs. Many of the locals are cashing retirement checks between drives. A little shorter does not necessarily mean uninteresting though.
There are eight small lakes out on Mesquite and when the water's running in the stream it plays with some kick. At the same time, it's very friendly to women, seniors, anyone who finds distance to be a challenge. The 366-yard par-4 ninth is illustrative of a course that regularly lets average hackers go for the green.

Great course for the cost.
For the money, the course was a great value. Conditions were very playable and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Nice Course
Very Nice course, played in just over 4 hours. Very friendly staff
Average Golf for a Good Price
At $39 per round, this could be the best in-season value in the Coachella Valley. Don't get me wrong, this course isn't maintained like the expensive resort courses sometimes are. But given the choice between $39 for a average condition public course, or $100+ for a course in better condition, I will take the less expensive course. Greens were very slow - due to recent overseed, and some of the fairways and tees were a bit rough. But I have played courses in similar condition that cost twice as much this time of the year. I will definitely play this course again (and again) this winter. I HATE paying too much money for golf. But too much money seems to be the norm for "in-season" golf in Coachella Valley.
Course needs grass cut and sand work. Easily played in 4 hours.
For the money golf was OK. Looks like maintenance of the course is in the catchup mode. Not sure I would play again as the grass was a little long which made it difficult to find balls outside the fairway. The sand bunkers need a lot of work. The staff was cordial and the starter was very helpful.
Traps are hidious- grass growning out of them-greens are fair
These are the worse traps I've ever seen, even though I was never in one. Greens are slow. They seemed to be just a little long. Fairways were in fairly good shape. Course was fairly opened and some what challenging.
Not a good value - Course in shoddy condition
About half of the sand traps had many mature weeds growing in them. The grass just outside the fairways was so long that it was very difficuly to find a ball that I knew was just 1 to 5 yards outside the fairway. It seems that they are letting the golf course run down. Pace of play was reasonable. To be fair, it was 93 degrees so they many be waiting for the weather to drop back into the eighiies before they do more work on the rough, but the weeds in the bunkers were there before this recent hot spell.
good value
Greens were better than 2 weeks ago and are filling in. The pace was slow on the front and no marshall to speak of other than the starter. No cart girl, but snack bar at the turn. Overall a good value for the $39 fee on golfnow.
Easy, flat course
Nice flat, easy to play course. Water hazards shown on scorecard are no longer there, so a little misleading.
This course is good when you feel like having a simple good round of the game.
Over all a great day at the course. Good weather/great conditions, not to crowded.
Mesquite Needs Maintenance & Daily TLC
I was surprised by the “crowned” tee boxes throughout the Mesquite Golf Club.
Mesquite is long overdue for tee box maintenance to level the tee boxes, a process that can be completed with seeding or with sod.
Having downhill and sidehill lies on every tee box is frustrating.
My impression of the greens was that of the 18 greens, only half had been mowed on that day and the half that had not been mowed were very rough and actually were laughable to play on.
Daily maintenance of a golf course’s greens is mandatory for the enjoyment of the playing (& paying) public you wish to serve.
The course had more weeds than grass on the fairways.
I was a first time visitor to Mesquite Golf Club and I will not be back.
My 5-hour round of golf was played on 10/25/2012.
Not a good place to play.
This course was terrible. The course was not maintained well and the greens were slow and in very poor shape, bare spots were on every green and they did not appear to be well kept. The rough was very long and most of it was not mowed. I saw some of the equipment and it appeared to be very old and outdated and the pieces I saw (2) were disabled, one rough mower and one tri-plex. The rumor I heard was the owners knew nothing about maintaining or running a golf course and they were trying to get rid of it. The potential quality of the course is great but it is not being taken care of.
Opened to early
The greens were in poor shape with lots of dead spots. The sand traps were in very poor condition and contained large stones and grass growing. Grass along the fairway was very till resulting in several lost balls. Overall I would have suggested that they keep it closed another week after overseeding. The greens really reguire some attention now.
Course needs quite a bit of work.
Mesquite could be a really nice course but the grass was in extremely poor condition, a tremendous amount of weeds & bare spots, and all of the sand traps had grass growing in them and the greens were like putting off the fairway. The course just opened up from overseeding October 12, 2012, but that was no excuse for the extremely poor condition. Definitely not worth even $39 it cost us to play.
Don't waste your time
Too many beautiful courses in Palm Springs...do not waste time or money at this one. Top three of worst courses I have ever played. Greens were like shag carpets and rest of course was in worse shape.
Off season, needs time
The course was off season and the entire course was in rough condition. Some cool weather will correct this. The price was rigth so not a big deal but would not pay full or even close to full price until situation corrected. One note, pro shop did notmention course was in the shape it was.
Course was not in good shape
The course is a desert course. Staff told me that the grass had not bee cut very closely due to the heat. It has not been extremely hot in the desert lately, and other courses I have played have been cut. Fairways were ratty and roughs were long. Greens had bare spots. Lakes were very low with a lot of mud.
Good for the price ($20). Old course not in very good condition.
Nice weather, enjoyable day. Greens are in terrible shape and bird-pecked by the roadrunners. Fairways are rough.
Nice setting but not a great course.
Grass needed to be cut. Lost balls in plain sight just inches off the fairways. Same with the greens=very slow. Overbooked and too many new golfers in a row. It took a long time to play and we waited at every tee to play.
Course should be good few weeks
Staff was very upfront on current condition. So we knew the greens were rough. The rough was long fairways not mowed. The course had just opened from the summer hiatus so it should be much better in a few weeks. place has the best views!
Just reseeded
It needs a few more weeks to be fun. This was the first weekend since reseeding. Greens played to about a 5 or. 6 on the Stemp meter. Rough was really ragged. Going one foot off the fairway could result in a lost ball.
In fairness, given a couple weeks, it would be a much better experience I'm sure.
