Hyde Park Golf Club
About
Hyde Park Golf Club, built in 1925 by Donald Ross, is one of the oldest in Florida. In 1971, the golf course was purchased by former touring professionals Billy Maxwell and Chris Blocker, who have successfully restored it.
Rolling hills, gorgeous Spanish Oaks and towering Southern Pines make Hyde Park a lasting experience. A tour stop for the men's and women's professional golf tours in the 1940s and 1950s, the golf course gained a place in history during the 1947 Jacksonville Open. The great Ben Hogan took an 11 on the par-3 sixth, which became known as "Hogan's Alley." It has a deep-faced bunker to the right and water to the left.
Hyde Park Golf Club measures 6,468 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71, and it has a slope rating of 124.

Open Your Shoulders
This course is well laid out with its tree lined fairways. Holes were challenging and from the back tees you could certainly let loose with your driver. The greens were running very true. An enjoyable game despite the short shower.
Great for the price
Played on a Saturday with my wife. I got a deal on Golfnow for $17.50 each. Upon arrival the clubhouse staff was friendly and engaging. The course appeared packed but they allowed us to go early. The greens were very consistent, a few had minor issues which didn't interfere with our game. Overall, I highly recommend Hyde Park.
Average / convenient
Only a few holes have a ball washer at them, too many tree roots if your on edge of fairway and especially rough, not O.B. Some greens still have bare spots. I only play this course when I can get big discount price and I live a half mile away. Not a $30-$40 course like they charge and they rarely offer deals. Better courses in the area for that price. Asked for a Large ice tea, they have one size (small 12oz at most) for $1.50.
Donald Ross Says It All
As you can tell by the title I love Donald Ross designed courses. No Tee Time (did not book on GolfNow) and a single player often times spells trouble but the staff was great and paired me up with a young local guy who knew the course. Nicely wooded with not a lot of water but a challenging layout. Greens could use some attention but the fairways were in good shape along with the majority of the tee boxes. Played in less than 4 hours as it was a weekday. As my daughter lives within a short drive from the course I will be returning. Another good point, $25.00 for Sr's, Law Enforcement and Military.
Average
I typically play beautiful courses which have fast and receptive greens and lush fairways and tee boxes. So in saying that this course is probably good for the average golfer just looking for a semi decent course. Tee boxes have grass not sand, the slow greens were covered with grass and no terrible dead spots, not super bumpy which was a surprise. Fairways were long so don't expect ANY roll. My issue is every time I play here I feel like I'm putting the pro shop staff out, like they have more important things to do then take my money. Most courses I play the people seem happy to see me and are polite. These people, at best, are indifferent. So as the title says I rate this course AVERAGE to below average and would almost always play somewhere else.
Neat old Donald Ross course.
I play this course 3+ times a month. Not a new, plush course. It is as golf was played in 1950's, except with carts. Would be a great walking course if they allowed it earlier.
Best Practice Course on the West Side
The layout of this course is pretty good with the last 4 holes being the most challenging. Some 4s and 5s are reachable for eagle pretty easily. My favorite way to improve my game and gauge my club distance.
Not in great condition
Course wasn't packed, went out at 12 and was done by 3:30. Fairways and greens were not in great shape. Probably wouldn't play here again, other courses in the area are better.
You get what you pay for
Greens were in rough shape partly because of maintenance and partly because people don't know how to fix their ball marks. Great course just needs some TLC.
BRING IT IN
I was visiting Jacksonville and was fortunate to have time to for eighteen holes. There was a 5:06 tee time available at Hyde Park, so a coworker and I reserved it. When we arrived scatter showers were all around the course and the guy at the register pointed out that there are no rain checks. We took a chance and were rewarded as the rain passed us by.
There were few other golfers so we quickly made our way around the course. It was a perfect afternoon until we walked off the thirteenth green. A seasoned gentleman (with Miller Lite in hand) drove his cart up to us and said, “I need you guys to take in.” I looked at my phone and it was twenty minutes after seven, the sun sets at eight thirty. So I asked, “Why?” He gave me an angry look and said, “Cause I been here since eight o'clock this morning, and I am ready to go.” I told him we paid for eighteen holes and clearly had time to finish. He explained that we could come back the following day and see about getting reimbursed. Then he said, “Bring it in,” and drove off.
We did not feel that this was fair, especially after being reminded at check in that there would be no rain checks. So we continued playing, even as Miller Lite Man yelled at us from the cart barn near the fourteenth fairway. My coworker has a very short fuse, so I apologize to Miller Lite Man for any obscenities that may have been yelled back at him. We played the remaining holes in a less relaxed mood, and turned the cart in ten minutes after eight. We were only two players, but eighteen holes in three hours does not seem to me an unreasonable pace.
I have never commented on a golf course before, and I do it now hoping to keep others from having a good afternoon spoiled by an encounter with this unhappy employee. I feel sorry for anyone who must work long hours, but Miller Lite Man should take the subject up with his employer, not paying customers. I like Hyde Park and this will stop me from coming back, but please do not offer late afternoon tee times if the staff is not willing to honor them.
Mr.
I like everything about the golf course but I was disappointed that I didn't see any Rangers or Starters,
Old Course - Poor Shape
Really basic course compared to most of what you'll find in the area. Strange though.
Course was packed. Fairways and greens were OK. Not great but OK. Layout is very basic and a bit short.
Soggy
I've played Hyde Park before. We played after a heavy rain and the course was a little wet but is in great condition. You can find nicer courses for cheaper in jacksonville. This place is proud of themselves.
OUTSTANDING DONALD ROSS DESIGN
GREAT LAYOUT, GREENS IN EXCELLANT CONDITION. LOCAL KNOWLEDGE IS VERY IMPORTANT. LAID-BACK, AT HOME FEELING ALL DAY, THANKS TO THE FRIENDLINESS OF THE STAFF AND FELLOW GOLFERS.
GREAT COURSE--GREAT TIME
I have played this course many times over the years,& it's still as fun and much of a challenge as ever. With all the rain we've had,the course was in great shape.Look forward to playing there again this weekend!
Good course
The golf course is in good shape..Wasn't a tough course..There was course forgiveness because of the fairways were next to one another. I enjoyed the course very much. I was also very scenic.
good test of your gold game
fairways not the best but acceptable. greens in good condition and elevation will test your approach game.
course is in front of you but requires good tee balls and exacting approach.
will play it again soon as it owes me one.
greens best in long time
Fairways so-so as usual but greens best in a long time - smooth and quick - enjoy them while it lasts
I don't see it
I really don't see that much to like about this course. The price is higher than another course not that far away that is a much better course. I found one ball washer, empty water coolers, and
an overabundance of un-kept areas. I will go back because golfers I play with like the place. I don't see it.
