About
Rivers Edge Golf Club is a salute to Shallotte (pronounced sha-loot), a beautifully laid-out stunner along the banks of the Shallotte River and the surrounding marshes, at the northern tip of the Grand Strand. Just don't let your friends coerce you into being Macho Man and play it from the back tees if you're a mid- to high-handicapper.
The slope rating is 149 from the tips, one of the highest in the low country, and will throw 10 forced carries at you, either off the tee, to the green, or both. If you fit the above description and try it from the backs, you'll end up tired and frustrated with a scorecard either bloated or unreliable.
A description of Rivers Edge wouldn't be complete without mentioning No. 9, a 570-yard par-5. You can get in trouble if you're long off the tee, in that the second half of the fairway rolls downhill to the marsh. However, if you're short off the tee, you'll be looking at either laying up well to the right of the green, where you will still be in marsh-danger if you venture too far left or are short, or trying to carry a broad expanse of marsh to reach the green, which juts out precariously into the marsh.

Golfer Reviews
Hard to beat
I have been a member at Rivers Edge for 10 years and we have never had better greens, they are the best around. The scenery is unmatched along the river. The course is in great shape as the staff works hard to keep it that way. The pro shop and kitchen staff are friendly and helpful. If you live in the area or are visiting, Rivers Edge is a must play course. You will be back.
Best Greens in 10 years
Member at RIver's Edge GC (RE) for 10 years. Best greens ever (new Sunday Ultradwarf Bermuda). RE Always One of best shot-maker layouts in SE & mid Atlantic.Arnie & team did a terrific design. Staff helpful & friendly. Come see for yourself. Great value.
Best views on south east coast
Great course. Holes 8, 9, 15, 16, 17 and 18 are on the Shallotte River. Absolutely breathtaking. Greens are perfect. Play it. You won't be disappointed.
Great course!
This course is challenging yet not overly so. Condition of course was excellent. We played at 1 pm and finished in less than 4 hours (twosome). Scenery was beautiful.
Bring your "A" game
This is a really nice course! Each hole is something different to test your skill. I played from the white tees, and found this course to be very challenging for my skill level. There are multiple shots over marsh land and all the parts 3's are fair but not "gimees" Scenery is awesome! Staff was friendly.
Course conditions were very good with some wet areas as expected because of the recent rainfall.
All in all...great experience. It's a Palmer course...that says it all! Oh...and book it on Golfnow...save some cash!
Worth the drive to Shallotte
This is a great track with a wonderful variety of holes that will challenge all levels of golfers. The ninth will leave you muttering but the balance of the holes are a mix of holes where you can get selectively get aggressive and score well.
Slow play on Thursday
Nicely maintained target course (tee boxes not so much), green are firm and true, but a bit slower than anticipated, bunkers so-so (but it had rained, so I was Ok with that), friendly staff. Second round of the week (on a Thursday) was extremely slow (3 hour;s for 9, I gave up after 4+ hours and 12 holes). Still would play again.
Another great Palmer Design
Every Palmer course I have ever played has been a good experience. And Rivers Edge keeps that streak alive. Beautiful layout bordering Shalotte River. Spend the $5 for the yardage book if first time playing. A handful of blind tee shots with some surprises. A couple, what I thought, well struck drives wound up in the marsh land as the fairways had taken a turn I had not anticipated. I was too cheap to drop the $5 but paid for it with a couple lost balls !
Great layout but 9th and 18th holes especially stand out in my memory. Greens had recently been aerated so greens fees were discounted, but if they had not told me I probably would not have noticed. A couple tee boxes could use some fresh sod but otherwise course in really good shape. Attentive staff and beverage cart comes by multiple times throughout the round. Lots of water coolers on the course. 5 stars from me
Nice course, mediocre conditions
After making our booking I received a call from the River's Edge staff informing me that they had just aerified their greens, and that we could change our tee time if we wanted to wait until the greens were in better condition. I very much appreciated this courtesy call. We decided to go ahead with our original tee time. Looking back on our round, the greens really weren't too bad at all. However, many of the tee boxes were in terrible condition, and some of the fairways and bunkers were very bad as well. The course layout is pretty interesting, especially the holes along the river. Holes 8,9,16,17,18 are particularly memorable. The River's Edge staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. Overall it was an enjoyable round and I look forward to future rounds at River's Edge.
Thank you for your review and feedback. We will take your words into consideration as we are constantly working to improve our course. We are happy to hear that overall you enjoyed your round and we are looking forward to having you back!
Rivers Edge
Really like the course but it is not in tip top shape. The bunkers need a lot of work and the is crabgrass in many spots. Played it 3-4 years ago and it was in better condition.
Thank you for your feedback. We will address this information internally and hopefully by the next time you return, we will have improved. Thank you for letting us know and we hope to see you in the future.
Arnies Revenge
This course was in great condition and is noted for its 9th hole (Arnies Revenge). While 9 is an extremely tough hole, the beauty of 16, 17, 18 are hard to beat. The forced carries on 17 and 18 are challenging. I think a must play for the Grand Strand
Thank you for your 5 Star review, Duane! We are pleased to hear how much you enjoyed our course, especially Arnies Revenge! Happy to hear you would consider it a must play. Hope to see you soon!
Great course watch out for the heat
Don't go if you aren't accustomed to the heat they will not let you bring coolers and they won't supply you with ice unless you drink beer which it was too hot to drink. Other than that the course was beautiful and everyone else was VERY friendly.
Thank you for your review and feedback. We are constantly trying to make improvements to better our golfers experience, so we will take this into consideration. We hope you decide to come back again soon for another round!
Great Greens
Great course on the marsh. The greens were perfect!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the 5 Star review, Chris!
Average
On vacation and wife and kids dropped me off. I went to check and get range balls, was then directed to cart guys. After a few minutes of enjoying his smoke, he acknowledged me, but was upset I didn't have my clubs for him to place on cart. Mumbled "I seear..." as I drove off; wanted a tip. Starter was good, polite. Greens are sandy, bunkers are dirt. Short course. Nice scenery, quiet.
We are very sorry about your encounter with one of our staff members. This situation is something we do not tolerate and will handle internally. Thank you for taking the time to let us know. Again, we apologize that you did not get the best possible experience on our course.
Great Course to play
Course in great condition especially greens. Beautiful course setting
Only complaint is the the cart path from 11 to 12 green needs to be repaired.
Thank you for your 5 star review! We are happy to hear you had an enjoyable day and we will take your feedback into consideration. Hope to see you soon!
Play smart!
The course was in great shape with the exception of one green. The layout is tricky for a first timer so you may find it beneficial to play to yardages and lay ups. Read the winds and pray on most all short shots and par 3's. Putts are almost all strait and slow so scoring on greens should come easy. Several hole are postcard beautiful and yield great spots for group pics. Play smart, enjoy the scenery, consider taking more than one ball, and have a very memorable round of golf.
Thank you for your review and feedback! We will address the condition of the green internally. Otherwise, we are happy to have provided you with a memorable round of golf!
Great layout with even better views
River's Edge is one of the better courses in this part of the state. The views on 8, 9, 16, 17, and 18 are worth the green fees alone. The course was in great shape, even with the amount of rain we've had lately. Im looking forward to playing here again, especially if I can find rates as low as I did.
Thank you for your 5 star review! We are glad you enjoyed our views as much as you enjoyed our course! We're looking forward to seeing you again!
Excellent New Sunday UltraDwarf Bermuda Greens
Last year the decision was made to close the course and renovate the greens at Rivers Edge. The course was the first course to select Sunday UltraDwarf Bermuda grass for the greens. In 12 weeks Rivers Edge transformed into the Championship Course everyone was waiting for. If you have not played Rivers Edge since last year, it is a MUST on your play list. Come see Jeff and the staff and enjoy at great day on the Shallotte River playing Rivers Edge.
Love This Course!
I have played a number of courses in the area and enjoy many of them -- The Thistle, Tiger's Eye, Oak Island, Pine Lakes, Glen Dornach, Heather Glen and others. Rivers Edge is still, however, my favorite. You can't beat the layout and you can't beat the views.
If you're visiting southeastern North Carolina or the Grand Strand, Rivers Edge is a must play. You'll be very happy you did!
Great Experience!
Had a 1:00 tee time after a pouring rain all morning. Wasn't sure if the weather would hold but fortunately for us did. Course had a great layout and views. Definitely would recommend for anyone in the area (we were visiting Coastal Carolina but well worth the hour long drive). Great rate thanks to GolfNow.
Wow! Thank you very much for the 5 star rating! We are thrilled that you had a great time. We hope to see you back soon!
