Rivers Edge Golf Club
About
Rivers Edge Golf Club is a salute to Shallotte (pronounced sha-loot), a beautifully laid-out stunner along the banks of the Shallotte River and the surrounding marshes, at the northern tip of the Grand Strand. Just don't let your friends coerce you into being Macho Man and play it from the back tees if you're a mid- to high-handicapper.
The slope rating is 149 from the tips, one of the highest in the low country, and will throw 10 forced carries at you, either off the tee, to the green, or both. If you fit the above description and try it from the backs, you'll end up tired and frustrated with a scorecard either bloated or unreliable.
A description of Rivers Edge wouldn't be complete without mentioning No. 9, a 570-yard par-5. You can get in trouble if you're long off the tee, in that the second half of the fairway rolls downhill to the marsh. However, if you're short off the tee, you'll be looking at either laying up well to the right of the green, where you will still be in marsh-danger if you venture too far left or are short, or trying to carry a broad expanse of marsh to reach the green, which juts out precariously into the marsh.

The Thrill Ride Continues
This is my favorite course on the entire Myrtle Beach Grand Strand, and I've played it more than any other. What stands out about it is that no two holes are remotely alike, so you can a round there and remember every hole when spending time at the 19th hole. The layout is challenging, with cliff-hangers like the short par 3 5th hole, downhill, over a marsh, and the roller coaster par 5 9th, where you drive into a 40 yd wide fairway, but then must carry a long marsh to a sliver of fairway angled 90 degrees to the direction of the fairway your tee shot sits in. If that's not enough, your third shot is to a peninsula green 50 yards deep and only 13 yds wide. At low tide you can see the thousands of balls that failed to make it safely from the initial fairway, or the approach to the green. the final four holes is one of the best stretches in golf, all playing along the marsh sitting on the right side of each hole. The 17th par 5 has a band of marsh 60 yards short of the green, and a tree in front of the right portion of the green, which is angled downhill to the right, so any approach hit with cut spin left of that tree will filter down to the right side of the green. The final hole, a short par 4, has a green set in an amphitheater setting, with hi8gh ground and the clubhouse left and rear, and the marsh to the right.
Ebeautiful lay out. Super slow play
Course is one of the top courses in the Myrtle Beach area. They had over 200 golfers this day so play was slow. Great course
Gotta love Myrtle Beach
Fantastic layout for this challenging course. Always love to travel to this area for the wonderful courses which make you think strategically regarding placement.
River edge
Course was nicely laid out. Well conditioned. Over booked 5+ hour round of golf.
Great layout, loved it. Best I have ever played.
Best course ever seen. Tricky, diabolical, fun, nature on every hole. Finger sand traps in fairways, lots of sand, very good greens, Arnie's revenge is so crazy fun. Go, you have to go. Go.
Golf Cart Issues
Great layout and fun course to play. Conditions were good. Only negative were the golf cart quality and quantity. There were about 30 players waiting at the bag drop because they ran out of carts. Staff said it happens everyday. We waited about 30 min. My cart blew a tire after 15 holes because of wear. Staff was quick to swap carts but brakes were defective in the new one.
With all that said, I’d play there again.
Hidden Gem
Despite a brief unannounced thunderstorm that disrupted our play during our round it was fantastic. The course was well maintained, holes very challenging and staff was very nice. Loved the layout of the course. Can't wait till I'm back in the area to play again.
fantastic views
great eye appeal
stunning views
# 9 very challenging and beautiful hole
difficult and very enjoyable
First time to play River's Edge
In all the years I have been going to the Myrtle Beach area for the Myrtle Beach World Am, I had never played River's Edge. Made a point of playing it this year. I really like the course. Weather was nice but conditions were very wet. Except for being wet, the overall conditions were very good. Greens were a bit slow (but it is summertime in Myrtle Beach area). Some very challenging holes. I would like to play it again in the future since I think local knowledge pays off here.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
River's Edge...definitely worth the drive up to play it.
Worth the drive!
Played after a terrential downpour with almost 3" of rain just before we teed off. Course was soaked but the layout, staff and surprisingly stellar greens made it worth the trip north. One of the best layouts in the Myrtle Beach area you will ever play with lots of opportunities to work on your approach and short game. Would play again and again and can only imagine how much fun the course would be on a better day. Really enjoyed our experience.
Great course
Try to play it every year when I come for vacation
Soggy, but Fun
Played the morning after 2.5 inches of rain from the night before. The course was obviously soaked and cart path only. Was paired with another single and were sent out first in the morning. The course is laid out nicely with wide fairways that narrow down to tight greens. Considering the amount of rain, the greens were still in good shape and rolled well. This course is not one that you would want to walk as the holes are spread out, but was a joy playing with a cart.
Will be returning hopefully when the course is drier.
Target Golf with great views
Accuracy is definitely a plus when playing this course.
Great water views with equally tough closing holes on the front and back nine. Your skills will be tested and risk vs. reward plays a big role in scoring at this course.
Course still great
Even though greens were just pinched they putted pretty true kudos to maintenance crews
Exceptional Course
If you are looking for a challenging course that will make you want to come back over and over again, Rivers Edge is that course. The layout and backdrops of the course are beautiful and Arnie's Revenge (9th hole) will make even the best golfers struggle. The fairways were crisp and the greens were perfect. Everything you could ask for from a course and even the price was not outrageous when using Golf Now.
Arnie would be mad
I have been playing this course since it opened in 1999/2000 and been playing every third year when I vacation in the area. As noted in a previous review, the "sand traps", were not what you expect from a premium signature course. Sand was non-existent, even grass trying to grow in the dirt. The Tee-Boxes were in the worse shape of the 6 courses that were played this week. With primarily sand in about a quarter of the tee-boxes. The on-course staff/starter contributed to an altercation with a member that I was paired with. The starter inserted a foursome in front of us, prior to our tee time, and then the two "members" starting arguing right on the first tee. Very embarrassing!! At this point I do not recommend playing this course
Good Layout, Poorly maintained
Had no problem with the layout---required some accurate distance control, some forced carries.
However, the teeboxes, sand traps, and greens were in really bad shape. We were joking about how you really wanted to avoid the "bunkers" since it was such a ridiculous lie.
Also the teebox on #15 (par three over the Marsh) was entirely sand.
Staff was friendly, and some of the views were great.
What happened to this course???
What happend to this course since May 2016??? Clearly they stopped taking care of it! One positive is that it is one of the most beautiful pieces of land I've played golf on. The course...they completely gave up on it, the sand traps, grass has taken over where sand once was, the tee boxes had no grass, fairways were gone. Needless to say we were completely dissatisfied.
Great Time
Took longer than expected to get to the course. Booked on GN as a single and Arrived easily 20 minutes later than my tee time. tee times were booked solid and they still let me tee off as a single. Staff was well above par and the course was the best I've played yet. Challenging and well maintained. Had water coolers on like 5 tee boxes. last three holes ate me up good but was for sure worth the view. With out a doubt will be coming back!!!
