Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

awful conditions
one of the worst courses i’ve played in this area.
Surprisingly bad
Hard to believe the cost for this course considering the conditions. Most bunkers were littered with rocks and crabgrass was on some greens. I’ve played out of the rough that looked better than most of the tee boxes. This course used to be a course I’d circle on the calendar to play. I have a hard time thinking that I’ll be going back anytime soon…
Driving range
Fairways and tee boxes look like an abandoned out if business golf course. ...the last time I saw a course in this bad of shape the following year it was sold to builders for a new home development. I'm guess that's what's happening here.
Nice layout
Greens were in great shape. Fairways are a mess due to disease - no notice when booking on site which is disappointing. Staff was great.
Fun and painful
The greens were ok the fairways were trash. Not worth the 50+ bucks we paid.
Fairways and tee boxes are dead, greens are weeds, bunkers are were poor
Wow, they should inform potential guests that the course is in such bad shape. fairways were literally dirt. Must have burnt them with fertilizer or some other catastrophe.
Over priced
Course not in good shape cart path only lots of dry damage spots a $40 dollar course for now.
Fairways are trashed.
Fairways are barely playable and would be surprised if they come back this year. Nice layout, friendly staff. Looking forward to the course coming back.
Friendly People, Fairways are in bad shape
I played this course for the first time on 9/5/2021. I was very happy with the layout and elevation changes. As many other people have mentioned, this course lost its fairways (probably due to the lack of rain early, then the deluges we’ve had recently) and they’re in rough shape - pretty much unplayable. The good news is that they are working hard to restore the fairways and I think things are moving in the right direction for recovery next season. They are also working on the tee boxes, so the tees for the most part were not in their normal spots. I imagine when everything is sorted out, this course will play much differently.
The greens are in decent shape and I found them to roll true and a good speed. Of course, they have the usual issues with people not fixing their pitch marks - makes me crazy. I always make it a habit to fix at least 2 on every green
I didn’t take advantage of the off-course amenities, so I can’t comment.
I recommend this course, but wait until next Spring if you can.
Growing back to former glory.
As one of the guys in my group mentioned, and many people have mentioned in the comments, this course has seen better days. I’ll take their word for it as it was my first time playing OH. That being said, the clubhouse is aware and they are working to grow the grass on the fairways back by September, even offering a discount to come back again in the Fall, which was a nice touch. The course layout is fun but challenging and the employees are extremely kind and helpful. Looking forward to returning soon.
Horrible Condition
Fair ways were in terrible condition. The green for the first three or four holes were also pretty bad. But they still charged $81, which is entirely too much considering course condition.
Trashed
Worst conditions I've seen on a course in a long time, maybe ever. They've let this place continually deteriorate over the years to the point it's almost unplayable. Only saving grace is the greens are in "ok" shape.
Decent course in bad condition
I have played this course a few times before and really enjoyed it. Sadly this time the condition of the course was poor. A course marshal offered us a comp pass which was appreciated and he explained that they had an invasion of crab grass which was on the way out>
I'd definitely return as the course is good, I will just wait until the condition is better
Love this course, but there should be warnings before you book a tee time describing the course is currently undergoing fairway reparations. I will be coming back but there has to be some sort of notice before booking.
Don’t golf there
Staff was great offered a Comp pass to come back in the spring. But the conditions of this course is the worst I’ve seen this year. Don’t golf there let them fix the fairways
They’ve lost the course
This course used to be one of my favorites in the DC area, but has fallen way downhill. I’ve been twice in the past 3 weeks - there are weeds growing on the greens, bald spots throughout the course, very lumpy and oversoft fairways, and my first round took almost 5.5 hours! I hope management can get the course back in good shape, but until then I’ll have to look elsewhere.
