Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Gentlemen Rules for Sandtraps
Gentlemen can't let others play from these sandtraps. They get so bad and are unrecognizable as sandtraps. It really detracts from an otherwise challenging course.
Not what it used to be
Greens are worst greens I’ve seen in 2020. The pace of play was atrocious and we spent 5 hours 45 mins on our round yesterday. Old Hickory had the nerve to charge $80 for a round here and that was a “hot deal” - do not waste your time here and go elsewhere. I am not exaggerating about the greens. I would rather putt on aerating greens the rest of my life than go through that experience again. Old Hickory needs to step it up, you’re embarrassing your sister courses of Bull Run and Raspberry Falls. Do better
Not Worth the Money
Layout of the course is very nice but the course conditions are horrendous. You can see that the course used to be nice but has gone downhill terribly. The greens are in very bad shape, bear patches everywhere and some were so bad we just called a 2 putt and was done with the hole. Bunkers are in such bad shape that you can't play out of them. Finally , the worst part of the round was the extremely SLOW play. It took us three hours to play the front nine. Had to wait every hole for more then five minutes. No marshals to speed up play. We couldn't finish due to the slow play. They should give me a refund! I paid $55 too much. Never will play this course again.
Good course, Robyn, Randy, Nikki are outstanding! Rangers did best job they could given the number of players, friendly. Not to be taken for granted.
Good course given all the play...on par or better than most in Northern Va.
Fall 2020 _ Poor Course Conditions
The sand traps were in terrible shape (no sand, weeds growing in them, storm water had erroded the shape out) , the greens were potted with dead grass, the tee boxes were heavily worn. the fairways were in good condition but i was disappointed in the lack of yardage markers in the fairway.
Not in good shape right now
Always loved this course due to layout and conditions. A number of fairways and greens in terrible shape. Probably will wait until next spring to see if conditions get better.
Lowest round of my life but still would pass
This place has the potential to be a great course but it is not cared for at all. At 85$ a round and the distance from DC I would definitely recommend passing on playing here unless it’s your only option. Overpriced and horribly kept.
One of the better courses in the area
We hadn’t played here since Covid broke out, and amenities were very clean and felt safe. Course was in great shape.
Nice club house and staff. Course has turned into a pile of dirt with some stuff growing out if it
Great club house. Staff super friendly. Thanks to over populated Northern Va, Covid, and a few other things, course like Old Hickory can unfortunately fill up with people, charge a lot, and your asking yourself if you playing in someones backyard or a course. Then you see the backyards of the houses are actually much better kept, you may be confused about what it is your actually playing on. Point being the course has turned to awful. But this company has completely gone to crap. Bull run, rasp falls, also gone to crap. Over priced courses in nice neighborhoods with awful grounds keeping. Its not going to get any better anytime soon bc were all stuck paying these prices for awful courses. Cya in the cow pasture next week
Course is in bad shape
It is sad because I love the layout of this course. I paid $85 for a weekday morning round. I played this course last spring as well but at $95 weekday round. Last spring it was not worth the $95 because of the shape the course was in and I told myself I would give it some time to come back before playing it again. It is in a nice community and good membership and at the time reputable management company, so I figured it was just going through some rough times and it would come back.. Fast forward to this morning I paid the $85 thinking “well I gave it a year and a couple months to get back into the course I remembered serval years back. I was very disappointed to see the shape the course was in. Fairways were almost unplayable, tee boxes were some of the worst I’ve seen in Northern VA, putting greens were in some spots not puttable because of the crab grass or bare spots were they killed the crab grass so it was just mud.. The collars were non existent you had rough then extremely low cut freshly rolled greens no transition. It was cart path only because they didn’t want you to drive on fairway not because of weather but because they were almost unplayable and any more daily wear and tear just from riding cart on them had the potential to make it unplayable. This slowed the pace of play down for a 5.5 hour Friday morning round. The tee boxes/ yardage was extremely confusing I played the yellow which on card says roughly 6600 and it played probably 6100 because of the location of the tee boxes. The score card had the whites at 5900 yards and they were sharing with the reds on almost every hole.so the white only played I am guessing about 5500 yards. There are so many better options to play in northern Virginia for well under $85. I will not be returning until I read better reviews coming from this course.. I was disappointed in myself for not checking reviews before booking. This is my first time ever writhing a review but I felt it is necessary to let people know what they are getting into before dropping that’s kind of money.... one last grip is there driving range is not my cup of tea because it’s mats only and you can’t hit wood or drover only irons off the mats...
I hope they get this course back in better shap because it is such a nice track when maintained better.
All that said I did shoot 79 but at has to do a lot of replacing of the ball because areas in fairway was unplayable so I didn’t feel right recording today’s round for my handicap even though it was a good round.
First time
First time playing this course after living in the area for a number of years. Round took 5 hours waiting on every tee box for the group in front of us to clear the fairway. They weren't good, but then again neither are we. No ranger in sight. I believe for $85 the round cost on a weekend morning, you can find much better value and quality elsewhere. Course wasn't in great shape either, but not sure if that's because of covid or that's just how it is.
