Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

What happened to your course?
Been playing here for years. The last two years it get worse and worse, half the greens have holes / divots j them the traps are unplayable. It’s sad this course used to be great what is going on??
Unfortunately Poor
I have heard about Old Hickory for some time and very much looked forward to today’s round. Unfortunately, the course played incredibly slowly (nearly 5:30 with a five some in front of us and no ranger in site) and was in very poor shape. There was a wedding booked at the facility (in the middle of the pandemic) which shut the bar and grill area down for golfing patrons for the entire day.
The fairways were shaggy and overgrown. The greens were patchy with bare spots (blight?) and crab grass pushing through. The rough was unplayably thick in some spots and barren in others.
My foursome was told by the attendant that COVID caused the course to get away from them. But having played several courses of varied regard in the area over the past few months (including the RFM-managed Augustine, which was in great shape) Old Hickory was in decidedly worse shape than all of them.
Simply put, think twice before you choose to play Old Hickory. Hopefully they can get it back to something close to reputation in the coming months. It was an unfortunate disappointment today.
Horrible Course Conditions
Firstly, the whole layout of the course seems to be an accident or an afterthought. A few holes here, another few there, and so on. I could get past that, but something seriously needs to be done about the course itself. The grass is terrible, especially the greens. Crab grass has invaded everywhere on it, and just mowed down to the same level to what real turf is there. Holes and patches everywhere. Stones, gravel and drainage pipes, yes drainage pipes in some of the sand traps. The fairways were like roughs, and about 50% bare. It's absolutely incredible that they would even consider charging for this. I will never go there again and would advise anyone looking at this location to stay well away and spend your money elsewhere.
Very Poor Course Conditions
Course is in poorest condition possible without going out of business. I’ve been playing Old Hickory for five years and up until today I found all aspects of the course to be well kept and above ave for NOVA area. Today the tee boxes were sloppy, the fairways were divot riddled and un-repaired, and the greens were flat out rotted with some form of widespread blight. The course is still asking top dollar to play but provides only bottom dollar golfing experience. Won’t be going there again this year. Hope they get there act together for next year.
Course Condition
The weather has really done with job and many of the course. Old Hickory is one of the worst I've seen.. carts had to stay out of the fairways and could only go in the rough. They have reseeded the fairways. So they have a lot of bare spots.
Shut it down
Course needs to shut down for a couple weeks and recover. I get the demand right now but clearly not spending any money to take care of it. Terrible condition and not even trying to fix the issues. Tee box’s, bunker and fairways unplayable. $100 rip off. Starter, ranger, cart lady and turn house attendant all great.
Late in the season
I love this course, so it is hard to see the 20+ day 100 degrees really took its toll on the fairways and greens. :( I have faith that the staff will work hard to get the course back into shape for the 2021 season.
Fairways were poor on some holes, crab grass, needs maintenance. Still a great layout. But currently its difficult justifying green fees for such conditions.
Course in awful condition, diseased Greens, Weeds, mud everywhere.
This used to be one of my favorite courses. Now it is in terrible shape. Every green is diseased, most of the fairways are all weeds, horrible. Terrible shape and a real shame.
Expensive For What?
The good:
This course is a challenge from the tips, fun track to prep for tourney golf.
The bad:
80$ round... so many other course for a lot less
Crab grass on most greens
Burned out fairways
List goes on...
I wouldn’t play again. It’s a classic neighborhood built around a course type place.
Course is expensive for its condition
Course had a lot of rough patches, dried up, brown spots, on all - tee box, fairways and some greens.
Not sure why they are charging so much for this course in its current condition.
Staff are friendly.
Was slightly disappoiinted that they were not providing individual carts, though they were charging $90 for a round. I guess if you have one reservation for two, they force you to go on one cart !
This course has went to crap. I paid 90 bucks for this . You have to kidding. me save your money.
Landscaping please
Course has a fun and interesting layout, but no landscaping maintenance. Fairways with grass taller than rough, weeds throughout, crabgrass patches on the greens.
