Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Great layout
It was extremely hot,but on this course you can always find shade. The course was in good shape as usual, a few dry spots, not many courses can say that they aren't suffering from the heat either. Always love the layout, that's what keeps bringing me back.
Great Course.
Well designed and well managed course. White tee is short and but shot accuracy is the key. I would highly recommend it.
Golf Comglomerates are Turning Great Courses into Junk!
I've been in this game for 54 years, so I have some creds. Over and over again, I play a course that has a super layout, but lousy maintenance. That's because maintenance dollars are not being spent the way they should. Corporate profits come first. This course is a prime example. I've played it several times since it was opened and the maintenance quality continues to decline.
While we all expect greens to be aerated twice a year, I've not seen another course do it in the scorching heat of JULY! The greens were aerated early to mid July, yet still running like a sandbox in August. To add fat to the fire, the cups were a disgrace. I would bet they were NOT changed out this morning. If so, that's just laziness and greed.
The plague of players not cleaning up after themselves also adds disgrace to the conditions. I probably fixed 20 extra pitch marks, myself. And the traps, well, they were mostly a mess. I'm confident they were not raked since the last rainfall, on Aug 1st!
This is a great layout and should not be destroyed by poor maintenance and poor corporate attitudes. Spend the money! Repair the course. For the good of the game!
Always a Challenge
From the golds bring a good game and all of your bag. Holes 9 and 18 are true tests of your drive and long iron accuracy. Birdy hole 18 and you are ready for the Tour.
Work to be done
Bunkers filled with 2nd rate play box sand mixed with pea sized pebbles diminishes what is otherwise a reasonably well maintained course. 9th hole green damaged by what appears to be spilled lawnmower fuel was an eyesore and affected putting (needs to be addressed).
Generally Old Hickory is and was worth the time, money ($44 hot deal) and bunkers.
Classic course layout makes play more enjoyable than some of the other hinkier local tracts.
Recommended and will continue to visit Old Hickory on a regular basis.
Mixed Bag
Good layout and staff, but conditions sketchy and not just because greens are coming back from aeration. Not sure if it's the amount of play or the type of groups this course gets, but the lack of repair of divots and ball marks is epidemic. Ask the starter about tees boxes, too - played the whites, but they were so far forward, might as well have been senior tees. Had 9 or less into 14 holes - kind of fun, but....coming back, but will check reviews first.
Nice course fun to play.
Great course very challenging but very fair. A little bit on the expensive side but thats why we love GOLFNOW.
Very enjoyable outing with the exception of the attitude of the starter. Loud obnoxious and used a lot of foul language even in the company of ladies. Very attentive to his friends and not the printed starter sheet. Once off the 1st tee box all was good. Club house staff is friendly and the beverage cart staff is awesome.
Worth the drive
There are still some signs of aeration on the greens, but putts rolled pretty true -- I was pleasantly surprised given the previous reviews' on that. The full layout of the course is a lot, given that you double back a lot, but the design of the individual holes is excellent -- probably a top 3 course I've played in the area in that department. The difficulty has been properly described in previous reviews -- a few very tough holes, a few rather easy ones, and plenty of solid intermediate ones that demand a good effort put are happy to yield par when you provide it.
I can see how it would take a while to play here when folks were playing slow, but we didn't have anyone in front of us and played in 3:30 -- not bad for our first time on the course.
Espected More from this quality course
I was disappointed because the course had been recently Airrated 2 weeks ago maybe. in the middle of July. Don't see that much and to pay that much for Airated greens and not be made aware before hand is not good.
Super hard
Greens were aerated, other than that it was intense, super difficult fairways as their was a lot of grade change but fun!!!! I will be at this course at least 5 times a month as it is beautiful, difficult and best staff around so far!!! Have fun
Nice layout, very poor condition
Greens, fairways and tee boxes in very rough shape. Recently aerated greens not filled with sand so putting was a joke. Why aren't courses on GolfNow required to provide notification of aeration? Never would have booked here. Fairways and tee boxes in poor shape. Nice layout though. Shame.
Great time!!!!!
I'm from out of state, staying in Alexandria, and wanted to golf. After calling several courses looking to rent clubs, I found a course that had a complete set. Old Hickory saved the day...when I arrived I was presented with a set of brand new Taylor Made M1 (56 sand-4 iron, 3h,5w,3w,D) the putter still had the factory plastic that I had to remove and was fitted with a super stoke grip(slim 2.0). They also provided 2 sleeves of Taylor made balls. Cost was 50$
Course was in good shape but the greens were extremely slow compared to the courses I'm used to playing in Florida.
Highly recommend Old Hickory!!!
Great Experience
The course is in great shape, the pace at 730 on a Friday was fast, and the Golf Now rate was unbeatable. Will be playing here again.
Hot Deal at a Hot Course
Have played here several times but not in the past couple years. Track was well maintained and of above par caliber. Recommend this course to average to skilled golfers as a true test. Greens are large and sloping but that makes it a test.
Great Course
This was a great golf course to play. It was in amazing shape. This was my third time playing this course and it has been better everytime. Not to challenging but just challenging enough.
Horrid Pace of play
The pace of play was absolutely horrible, the marshals do not do anything, every time I have played there always seems to be an issue with this. Other groups I have talked to say the same thing. The course always seems to play very wet even if it has not rained for a while. Greens were marked up beyond belief, no one seems to repair their ball marks, I walked toto several greens and had to fix others marks that were in plain sight. Pin locations were stupid, if you have three tiers on a green and the pin is on neither tier and is literally on the slope between tiers that is not fun golf, dont punish me for going for the pin. Several pin locations were within 2 feet of the fringe on severe slopes, if you did not hit the hole you were chipping back on, again, not fun. what they call a Driving range is a disgrace, basically there is no range. For the price there are several other nicer courses in the area
decent course, played on a busy day
The course was packed and there wasn't a starter or ranger which caused some issues of slow play. Front 9 took almost 2.5 hours, which is unacceptably slow for me on an early (before 8) weekday round. The course itself was in good condition but greens had lots of unrepaired ball marks. The place just seemed understaffed and overwhelmed to properly set up and take care of the course and keep players in line and moving. I would return if it was emptier, but I wouldn't highly recommend it. And I didn't care much, but someone must have angered the greenskeeper bc the pin placements were insanely difficult, almost every hole was right on a ridge or at the extreme edge of the large greens.
Rained but drained quickly
We played between 2 thunderstorms. Course drains quickly and is in very good condition.
A solid course with challenging greens
I live in D.C. and have put this in my standard rotation of area courses. If you're willing to drive 30 minutes outside the district there are plenty of great courses to play. Booking on GolfNow makes this course a great deal. Standard rate of 70 might be a bit steep on a weekday. The track is always in great shape. Greens are the most challenging part of the round, with rolling elevation changes and what I have always experienced to be extremely fast, also heavily bunkered. Most of the course is tree lined, but solid drives will funnel to the center of the fairway. I definitely recommend it. For intermediate players its a good challenge.
Course is in EXCELLENT shape
Played over Memorial Day weekend, and the course was beautiful - no bare areas anywhere, and the greens were in top shape!! Kudos to the superintendent and his staff on a fantastic job in keeping the course in such great shape! Staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Course is challenging, but fun to play. Will definitely be back, and will recommend to friends!
