Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Great Course
This was a great golf course to play. It was in amazing shape. This was my third time playing this course and it has been better everytime. Not to challenging but just challenging enough.
Horrid Pace of play
The pace of play was absolutely horrible, the marshals do not do anything, every time I have played there always seems to be an issue with this. Other groups I have talked to say the same thing. The course always seems to play very wet even if it has not rained for a while. Greens were marked up beyond belief, no one seems to repair their ball marks, I walked toto several greens and had to fix others marks that were in plain sight. Pin locations were stupid, if you have three tiers on a green and the pin is on neither tier and is literally on the slope between tiers that is not fun golf, dont punish me for going for the pin. Several pin locations were within 2 feet of the fringe on severe slopes, if you did not hit the hole you were chipping back on, again, not fun. what they call a Driving range is a disgrace, basically there is no range. For the price there are several other nicer courses in the area
decent course, played on a busy day
The course was packed and there wasn't a starter or ranger which caused some issues of slow play. Front 9 took almost 2.5 hours, which is unacceptably slow for me on an early (before 8) weekday round. The course itself was in good condition but greens had lots of unrepaired ball marks. The place just seemed understaffed and overwhelmed to properly set up and take care of the course and keep players in line and moving. I would return if it was emptier, but I wouldn't highly recommend it. And I didn't care much, but someone must have angered the greenskeeper bc the pin placements were insanely difficult, almost every hole was right on a ridge or at the extreme edge of the large greens.
Rained but drained quickly
We played between 2 thunderstorms. Course drains quickly and is in very good condition.
A solid course with challenging greens
I live in D.C. and have put this in my standard rotation of area courses. If you're willing to drive 30 minutes outside the district there are plenty of great courses to play. Booking on GolfNow makes this course a great deal. Standard rate of 70 might be a bit steep on a weekday. The track is always in great shape. Greens are the most challenging part of the round, with rolling elevation changes and what I have always experienced to be extremely fast, also heavily bunkered. Most of the course is tree lined, but solid drives will funnel to the center of the fairway. I definitely recommend it. For intermediate players its a good challenge.
Course is in EXCELLENT shape
Played over Memorial Day weekend, and the course was beautiful - no bare areas anywhere, and the greens were in top shape!! Kudos to the superintendent and his staff on a fantastic job in keeping the course in such great shape! Staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Course is challenging, but fun to play. Will definitely be back, and will recommend to friends!
A 5 star course, for certain
Played on Memorial Day, course was not crowded at all. Played in less than 4 hours, and never waited to hit a shot. Course is immaculate, no bare areas anywhere. Greens are two tiered in a lot of cases, with some false fronts as well. Only the best should play the "tips". The par 5 on the back has at least a 225 yard carry over a ravine, and #18 goes at 630 yards.
Staff was friendly and accommodating. A little pricey, try and get a hot deal if you can.
Great course...you will need every club in the Bag!
Excellent course that you had to think your way around. The fairways offer some good run out so often times you will use less than driver to avoid trouble off the teebox.
The greens were still recovering from aeration and were slow, however the greens are very undulating and require shots to be hit into specific windows. I am a 5 handicap and shot an 11 over 83 from the black tees, which was pretty good shooting for me at this point in the season. A high handicap golfer might be a lil overwhelmed by the course and will definately need a few extra sleeves of golf balls !!
There are alot of very good holes on this course and I will definately like to play it again when the greens are all healed up.
For a good time call...
Was a very nice course. The greens were recently aerated, so a bit bumpy, but they are tough. Multiple levels, some putts are impossible. We had a lot of fun playing "best putt" along the way since there was no guarantee you'd end up closer to the hole afterwards.
That said, its not too hard - it was a fund round.
Great course - still mending
This is a great course, however the day I played the greens were still mending from aeration in March. Can't wait to play here again once the greens are ready, this is a very well maintained course with some challenging holes.
Great course and pace
Great experience all the way around. From the Pro shop sign-in, to the starter letting us go ahead of a threesome, to a round that we played in 3.5 hours.
Course was in great shape too.
Not worth the full rack rate
For $92 I was expecting the course to be in great shape, I was completely wrong. Tee boxes were in poor shape and it seemed as though my ball was always inbetween patches of grass (patchy lies). Greens were aerated quite some time ago but yet the greens were not in good shape, almost felt as though I was putting in my homes shaggy carpet.
I've always enjoyed the courses lay out and you will for sure use all your clubs but for $92 it is not worth the money.
Greens are punched
Course is great but the greens are punched right now.
Kinda rough shape
We should've been warned that the greens had been aerated recently or the price charged should've been reduced. Putting was a bit of an adventure. I've played here many times and the fairways and tee boxes are really taking a beating. Hopefully now that there is sand on the carts, people playing will fill their divots. There should be sand buckets placed on the par 3 teeboxes to encourage people to fix their scars. I like the layout so hopefully as the weather gets better, the grass will have a chance to fill in.
Long off the tee baby!
Great course - it's long off the tee and a great challenge for the everyday golfer, no matter how talented. I found an awesome deal online but I'll definitely be back. Top 5 course you can play (without membership) in Virginia IMO.
In great shape for this time of year except......
The course was in great shape for this time of year except for the aeration of the greens, and sadly Golfnow did not mention this. Fortunately I understand it is a necessary evil at this time of year so I mostly just let it go. Been fighting health issues for the past 3 months so it was truly awesome to get out on the course, the three guys that I ended up playing with were great company. $38 is a great price for this track even with aerated greens. It offers you ample opportunity to succeed but you will pay for errant shots. I forgot my prescriptions in the cart in a plastic Safeway bag and never dreamed I would get them back this morning. Kudos to the young man working the carts last night, you saved me about $80 and much hassle. There was a little thank you left at the pro shop for him this morning when Troy brought me the bag much to my surprise.
Great day at the course
The course was in very good shape, lots of elevation changes and the greens were kind of fast( the way I like them). The staff was very knowledgeable , helpful and really nice. One thing i liked was range balls were free but you had to hit woods and driver into a net. All around it was a good day at the course. I will absolutely play there again.
Love the layout of the course!
Great views, nice wide fairways, a very forgiving layout if you go a little to the left or right of the fairway. The houses are not too close so you dont get too nervous if you shank one. Cant wait until it warms up some, this place is going to look incredible!
Good Course
I played 18 holes on Feb 29th and was concerned that the course conditions were going to be horrible so early in the season. Turns out it was not that bad other than apparently no one who plays this course understands the concept of replacing divots. Other than the divots everything is in better shape than I would have thought for this time of year. The staff was friendly and the carts were nice, the course is fairly challenging but nothing to scare you away. I usually hit in the 90’s and I stayed in that same range here. I would recommend the course, but try to play with someone who has played before because some of the dangers are not obvious. The only real complaint besides the divots on the fairway not being replaced (bad etiquette by players, not the course management fault) is an almost complete lack of yardage markers. There are some yardages on sprinkler heads and the like but we all know how hard those are to find sometimes. They have markers on the cart path but if you are in the middle of the fairway like you are supposed to be those are not all that helpful. My suggestion to management is to put up birdfeeders or something at the 200, 150 and 100yd marks, they could even go crazy and paint them distinctive colors based on the different distances.
