Old Hickory Golf Club
About
Beaver Creek divides Old Hickory Golf Club with nine holes sitting north of the creek and nine holes south. The course has a classic parkland layout that plays across gently rolling hills. The fairways were cut through forests of mature hardwoods but they are wide and carefully sculpted to direct balls toward the middle. Skillful players could even try to use the contours to their advantage. Each hole has a bunkers but the bunkering is not excessive. In addition to the mounding and bunkering, the undulating terrain provides natural elevation changes. The golf course finishes with what is arguably its toughest hole. This monster par 5 is 620 yards from the back tees. It requires a drive over a ravine with a natural waste area to the left. Many consider it to be the toughest golf hole in northern Virginia.

Great course
Staff was very friendly as always and helpful. Course was in very good condition at this time of year.
Great course
Played this course for the first time. Unfortunately, there was a shotgun tournament happening that morning, but they started me off on hole #5 to get them ahead of them. Pace of play was pretty decent. Course was in surprisingly great condition for this time of year. Friendly staff...definitely will be going back.
Rain
How can such a great course not have club covers on the carts ?
It rained for 10 holes
Great Course, Nice club house
The course was in excellent shape for this time of year and I have no complaints about the conditions at all. I will say that the course would be in much better shape if people would repair ball marks and replace divots. The layout is a little odd in that you have to drive quite a ways to the first tee and several times throughout the round you double back on yourself and travel some to the next hole. Not a big deal but it would make walking the course almost impossible. Club house was nice and they had a bunch of different craft beers on tap.
This course is a challenge
The course is a real challenge; however, the pace of play can also be a challenge. I love playing this course because it will make you think and use every club in your bag. Overall it's a great place to test your game.
decent but somewhat overrated
The course is advertised as 6800 yards from tthe back tees, 142 slope. On just about every hole there is a big difference in distance from the gold tees (which would be blue on some courses) to the black (back) tees. Short of playing the black tees the course really isn't long enough to be much of challenge. All the par 3s come down from 200ish to 150ish. Nothing is over 500 yards. Off the gold tees the fairway on #1 becomes a chip-shot, #2 the lake becomes driveable. The 250 yard carry on #14 is gone, #16 becomes simple vs a challenge...#18 is just a decent par 5. It makes a big difference to play from the forward tees and even from the back tees it isn't that hard. Probably the course comes down from 142 to 120 or so. The big problem is that hitting long irons into these greens is not a good way to go through life. But in general the course is rather benign. It's a decent-looking course in decent condition ignoring the clear lack of player repair. Nothing to knock your socks off...and the neighborhood is very noisy, but all in all a decent course. Just decent. And probably busy and slow. Nice facilities but the drive to the course is annoying. Overall I'd say that the course is overwhelmed by its surroundings and relative to other courses in the area is fairly benign and average to play. But it does look good relative to a lot of area courses, it has a very mature, well-kept look to it and a restrained layout that is just barely interesting enough for a decent round.
Average Course
Pretty typical housing development golf course. Not a very scenic course, but overall, it was pretty well maintained. Got a good weekday deal on golf now that made it worth it. I would not pay the rack rate to play here, though. While we were there, the grounds crews seemed to be working pretty hard to get the course in better shape, tending to problem areas on several holes. That was nice to see.
Early November Golf
The fairways and greens of the course were in great shape even with the prior day's rain potentially offering up soggy conditions. The greens in particular were perfectly smooth and were eager to accept and keep properly angled shots to their surface. The length of the course offered the opportunity to dust off all clubs in the bag. Also appreciated were the drive up and drop off of the cart on arrival and very nice bar and lounge for mid and post round beverages and snacks.
Good course, good time
This is a comfortable, yet somewhat challenging course. Several greens have false fronts, which makes careful club selection imperative. A heavy rain the previous day left the sand traps with heavy wet sand. Should be better under normal conditions. The greens were on the slow side. They were, however, well maintained.
Good Changeling Day
Great course design. Postponed t-time due to extremely slow gathering ahead of us. Starter got us to start on hole 6 in order to get us out but we were stuck in the middle of a terrible gathering. Didn't help that the gathering we playing games on one t-box. Covering your tee shot with a plastic cup? Please.....Once the tournament got done we moved on with none in front of us. Course conditions were ok. Several (I mean several) lies in rough were at the bottom of holes with no grass. I have seen this course with better conditions. Greens were nice and fast. Fall tree color was really nice. Long day but I'll be back.
Really nice
1st time playing Old Hickory ... Excellent layout ... Course was in really good condition ... Played 1 set of tees up from the tips and found it very challenging !! I'll definitely come back !! Great value !!
Awesome Course
This course was everything I've heard it was and is!!! The course, pro shop and staff are Outstanding!!! Had a great time, this course gives you every challenge and vision you can imagine. Definitely a must play. If I lived locally, I would be a member and only play here!
Challenging course
Excellent course. Well maintained as usual. Narrow fairways and small greens. For me it was very challenging course.
Challenging Course
Old Hickory is a challenging, fun course to play with a couple of easy holes to start before getting into the round. Course conditions were typical for late summer; lots of tee box and fairway divots and ball marks on the greens. Recommend the addition of more sand boxes on the tees so players can fill in the divots. The golf carts could use the addition of a second sand bottle for fairway divots. Pace of play was slow, but there apparently was an outing in front of us.
Go to Augustine or an other the other area courses.
This place has seen better days. The fairways were ripped up and unrepaired, the greens were pock-marked. Not too much good to say except for the quick pace on the front 9 (about 1 3/4 hour) only to crawl on the back 9 to nearly 3 hours!!!) Where was the marshal was all that I thought waiting at every tee box!
For the money you'd expect better golfing...
A Gem in NoVa
As part of the Raspberry Golf Trail, Old Hickory is (to me) the best of the Virginia courses. It has more character than Bull Run, even better conditions that Raspberry Falls, and you can often play for less than either of the other two. This course really is a good value, which is saying a lot considering where it's located.
The holes have lots of variation and the conditions of the course are top-notch. Greens are pleasantly fast and firm, and hazards are mostly identifiable from the tee box.
I recommend this to anyone in the DMV area, it's a good value in an area not known for them.
It was so disappointing.
They didn't manage the pace of play at all and three of us had to play for more than 5 hours. Course condition was way poor too.
Very Nice but overplayed
The course was in good condition but very overplayed. The greens were in rough shape simply due to ball marks not being properly taken care of by other golfers. The staff all around the course were very nice. I would play here again.
Course
Great course. For a public course it is pretty good. Entire course is well maintained
