Candler Hills Golf Club
About
Candler Hills Golf Club in Ocala was designed by Florida native Gordon G. Lewis. In a state that has no shortage of golf courses, Candler Hills manages to stand out. The layout offers plenty of length at 7,233 yards from the back tees. The 662-yard fourth hole is the longest par 5 in Florida. There are no water hazards on the golf course, but what it lacks in water it more than makes up for in sand. Strategically placed traps line the fairways and greens. The layout has some challenging holes but it's fair and playable for all skill levels. Candler Hills G.C. is also well known for its extensive practice facility, which has a range with target greens placed at different yardages and a short-game area with a practice bunker and undulating green.

Glad We Tried It
We're still fairly new to the area and, although we are nearby, we hadn't played Candler Hills. Folks keep saying how nice it is so we saw a Hot Deal and took advantage. The course is brown...very little green grass; the grass is thin and the greens are so-so but they rolled ok (lots of undulation). We were very disappointed with the thinness of the fairway grass, and in retrospect, we don't recall there being any rough. Pro Shop was friendly enough; Bag Drop Attendant was great. No beverage cart. You can't blame the cold weather on the conditioning as our course is nearby and in great shape (and green). We will play Candler again when it's green to see if they actually have thicker grass. Course yardages aren't the best for us...they need a 6200 or so tee box. Sand traps were actually very nice.
Great course
Love this course, the staff is always very friendly and professional. The fairways are in amazing shape in most areas, the greens are receptive and fast.
My buddy that works on a course down here says that you can usually match the reviews with what people scored. Not always true!!!!!!!!!
I must of shot all of 95, and I use to be to 2-3 handicap, but I have to say:
I LOVE THIS COURSE AND WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND PLAYING HERE!!!!!!!!!!!
PS. We played as a twosome in about 31/2 hours
Great place
I was paired with 3 members and they were great golfing companions. Hung out and had a brew after the round. Course was in good condition and was challenging, especially from the back two sets of tees. LOTS of sand, no water.
Course was in good condition, couple we were paired with were good.Pace of play excellent.IT was an enjoyable day and I would definitely play here again and recommend playing.
Nice Course
First time playing here, and really enjoyed the layout. No water on course at all, which is quite unusual in Florida. However, there were plenty of strategically placed bunkers that you had to avoid. We had a 2:00 pm tee time, so knew teeing off that we had to play quickly to finish before dark. I was paired with a local threesome, and even though they were nice fellas, they were very slow. The player who rode with me told me it usually took them 4 1/2 hours to play this course. My question was why in the world did they book a 2:00 tee time knowing that they possibly could not finish? On the front nine, I had to constantly remind them to play ready golf so that we could finish. There were two groups waiting behind us most of the day, and we had to stay ahead of them to finish. One of the guys quit after 15 holes saying that he was tired, otherwise we wouldn't not have finished before dark. I am just not used to slow play, and felt bad that I had to keep on saying, "Let's go." Slow play affects my game for sure, and is still the biggest problem in golf.
Nice course with a fair price.
Fair price. Greens were tough - not overly receptive and had interesting pin placement with challenging breaks.
Long fairways
No water which was fine with me. I'm always drawn to water. Great and long course.
Tough greens
Tough greens The pin placement on several holes was on top of a mound on the green which meant if you missed the cup on your pot the ball rolled at least twice the distance from where you shot. The placement would have been fine for a professional tournaments. But forGolfers that play only one or two days a week it was frustrating.
Very enjoyable
My wife and I played and and were joined up with two very nice gentlemen who knew the course. We were very happy with the layout, beauty and condition of the course. Staff was very friendly. Bag drop attendant was very nice on arrival and we tipped him but after completing the round he took our clubs off the cart but did not clean them so we decided not to tip. We would definitely play this course again!
Hard course
Played with retired 6 day a week golfers, got my butt kicked. Memorable time.
