Very challenging
This course is very challenging. You have to hit the fairway or you're in trouble. This course is not forgiving. Greens held well but fast.
Never dull at Salt Creek!
Your ball runs forever on this Links style course. Sometimes it works for you, sometimes against you but it's never boring. The course is in decent shape for mid summer. The greens are very nice but a bit slow. The fairways are hard and fast with a ton of roll. The greenside Archies are on the hard side so be careful not to get "all ball". Salt Creek is always fun and challenging.
Great shape....
Fairways and greens are looking great. Best shape this course has played in years.
Good scenery, fast greens
Great weather, course was in good shape. the bunkers were not very sandy, but rather compacted dirt, which made it a little easier for me, so no problem.
The greens are pretty fast, and have very little break, but it has always been like that. Lots of holes with steep ravines on the side, so if there was ever a time to stay staight, it is when playing this course.
A little pricey, but close to home, so personally, I am paying for convenience.
I will absolutely play here again.
Course not in the best of shape
I've played Salt Creek about 4 times and this last time we played the course was in poor condition. It may be due to lack of watering due to the drought but it is quite dry. When checking in, the staff was not friendly and made a rude comment to my son. Nothing too major but not the reception you want when you are taking a day to relax and play golf. Driving range and putting area were great. Pace of the play was good (18 holes in a little over 4 hours). I ate a hot dog before golfing and dang that was a good hot dog.
For the money, I would certainly play East Lake before playing Salt Creek again.
Great value course
The greens on this course a VERY well maintained. Fairway is pretty good. Sand was WAY too hard. It was like hitting off of concrete. That was my biggest complaint.
Avoid the brats at the restaurant. :)
This is not a very long course, however, the temptation to "go for it" on the longer drives doesn't always serve you well. It can leave you with some really bad downhill lies. It's got a lot of risk/reward opportunities that make it challenging. Lots of elevation changes.
Feel free to leave the driver in the bag. I truly should have teed off the majority of the time w/ a 5-iron or a fairway wood. (NOTE: I hit my 5-iron about 185-195).
Also, if you have someone to play with who knows the course, that would be helpful. I played for the first time as a single and got caught making mistakes I wouldn't have otherwise.
Will play again.
greens are in good shape.
greens are in really good shape. fun course. will play it again.
Inland links-styled course
I'm a scratch golfer and was looking for another challenging course to play. This course has plenty of elevation changes and though the conditions are dry (Drought of 2014), the course is very playable. The fairways run firm and fast (great for an average length hitter), and the greens are very receptive.
The staff was very friendly, even the pro gave me a few tips before teeing off - which was helpful because you do have some blind tee shots, and some holes play really short with the elevation changes and firmness combined.
With the firm conditions, all 4 of the par 5's are gettable (I eagled two of them - one from 4 feet and the other a 20 footer that hung on the edge like Tiger's put at 16 at the Masters). I did play really well, which may create some bias here (shot 65) - which seems bizarre because I didn't feel like I putted that well; or, to be more precise, read the greens well. I think the only putts I made were those on the same line as my playing partners because whenever I putted without "help", I could not read the breaks (hey, I'm from Florida, and Californians can't read our Bermuda greens!!).
Anyway, the course is a fun track, the facilities are newish, and the staff is friendly. My only gripe, which is not the fault of the staff, was that the pace of play was a bit slow due to the several groups in front who were ABSOLUTELY CLUELESS when it came to playing "ready golf". It wasn't that busy, but the combination of some tough driving holes (where the hackers would spend too much time trying to find their hopeless causes) and the failure of some to play ready golf turned what should have been a 3.5 hour round into 4.25 hours.
Different but a blast
Total lynx course! Course plays fun if you get lucky and hit down the center of the fairway the whole round. Not much shade on the course. Course can trick you so make sure your always reading your golf caddie inside the cart. It's extremely helpful .. Fun time had by all.
Great course out in the open
Really like this course for a few reasons, great views, somewhat easy (short, wide and big greens), my only dislikes are that the fairways are dry with rock hard bunkers (blame it on the terrible California drought) so taking this into account they've done a wonderful job keeping the greens, and some pin placements are ridiculous (too close to edges). I will definitely come more often.
Challenging Course
The course was in good condition with the fairways recovering nicely from aeration. The sand traps, however, are just hard packed dirt in dire need of some actual sand.
The layout is fantastic with sloping fairways requiring careful placement of tee shots. The greens were in good shape and the staff was very friendly.
I'm definitely coming back.
Staff Friendlilness
Overall the course was OK, condition of grass OK, sand traps, hard sand, not soft. Problem is followed several other pairs, not bad passé, but started to run out of time when we hit the 9th hole and saw we could not make the 18 due to time frame and had to be somewhere, so went to club house to see if we could get a note, paper or anything and come back next week to finish the last nine, (we paid for 18) NO was the answer after several attempts to get a credit. To me this is not customer service, what does it matter to give credit to come back? does not effect anything, anyone. So we had to leave and miss the back nine. For that will not be back here again.
before pinehurst no. 2
this course predates the "natural" look designed back into modern course design, think Pinehurst no. 2. It adds to the rural design with not a single backyard or home near the course. The views from this course are awesome! If you are looking for an easy, overwatered, sticky course…don't play here. If your game allows you to pick your miss, play fairway roll and check your approach on the collar, this course will test that game. course knowledge will fundamentally change your approach to play…so give it a second chance.
Fantastic Greens
The USGA would have been proud to have the Salt Creek greens for the US Open last week.....very difficult contours, fast, in perfect shape....can't wait to get back there and challenge this course again.
Bad greens Bad Management
I was very disappointed with this course. I took two of my friends from out of town and wanted to take them to a nice golf course. I should of checked it before I took them. The greens are bad everything was dry, even the lakes. They should also have a superintendent monitoring that everything goes smooth but I did not see one the whole time I was there. It took us almost 6 hours to finish when it usually took me 4 hours to finish these holes. The reason why was a group of 8 golf players and 5 of their small kids in four carts were taking their time "trying" to play golf. They had no idea what they were doing. Very very bad, annoying and embarrassing. I've never had a bad experience in any golf course. It was not worth paying $171 for all three of us, it's worth $10. They have a lot of work to do. I don't think I will ever come back unless they 1. Fix their greens and 2. Give me my money back
Disappointed from Arizona
The course had been oversold that day. There were 2 fivesomes in front of us. Apparently, there was also an outing group which we were not made aware of.
We quit after 5 hours and 17 holes in frustration.
Greens were in decent shape but the fairways had just been aerated. The setting is very scenic. Front tees are very lady-friendly
Good course
Salt Creek is one of my favorites. There is never a wait or issue with getting on. You can usually play your two-some unpaired. I like the style of the course and always have a good time. Always surprised that there are so few people playing. Maybe they don't do a good job marketing the course.
needs help
Salt Creek has always been one of my four or five go to courses in the County but I'm very sorry to say that is going to change. This was my fourth visit to the course this year and every time the conditions have gotten worse. I know that we're in a drought and that water is expensive but until we start getting some rain I'm afraid I'll be looking elsewhere.
Ok course for the price
Played here for the first time. The staff was pretty friendly explaining everything. The course conditions were very dry and may of the fairways were not in the best shape. The greens were in a little a better shape. For the price this is a pretty good value.
Interesting Layout
First time playing here and was paired up with a couple of locals. They were friendly and easy to get along with. The staff was also the same. The course requires some local knowledge on where to land your ball otherwise, the sloping, dry fairways will punish you. The greens are still healing from the recent aerification and so they were all inconsistent and requires a minimum of two putts!! The fairways are super dry and it is like playing on packed dirt. I did enjoy the views of the mountains and the surrounding area!
Thank You for the review. It is items such as these that we are trying to address here at Salt Creek Golf Club. Please send me an email at anajera@saltcreekgc.com as i would love to discuss further. Thank You and hope to here from you soon.
