Beautiful Setting
Love the course, surrounded by bluffs with manicure fairways and greens. Pace of play was great.
One of the best courses in southern Minnesota.
A Minnesota Jewel
This is a country club quality course. The back 9 is a must see for all golfers. Pick the tees based on your handicap. There's enough challenge for every level. The greens in early May were perfect. The fairways are spotless. Clubhouse matches the quality. The back patio is a great place to have a meal after a round. It's 2 hours from my house and I played there 5 times last season. And hope I can play as many rounds this. Any price and it's worth it for the pristine quality. But there are deals to be had.
It's the greens
The whole course is in great shape but the greens were excellent, fast and true. The staff was friendly and helpful. Didn't linger in the lounge but it looked nice.
Worth the drive
Heard about this course through a friend, them saw it listed on the Top 50 list here on Golf Advisor. The course is a lot of fun, beautiful views of the surrounding area. I would recommend this to anyone who lives in the Twin Cities and looking for something different. I will definitely make it back to play!
Appropriately named The Jewel
Amazing bent grass fairways, beautiful views from each tee box, great risk / reward shots, and the greens were fantastic.
Highly recommend The Jewel to anyone!!
Really nice
Course was in perfect condition. Would highly recommend. Great scenery and unique holes.
Excellent course, among the best I've played
Everything about The Jewel was first class.
Quality putting green, driving range and even a chipping green with a bunker to practice sand shots.
The conditions of everything on the course was excellent, which was impressive since it had just rained a lot the previous two days and the entire night before. We weren't even sure if the course would be playable that day. I was especially impressed by the great shape of the bunkers despite all the rain.
The greens were immaculate, rolled well and were slightly on the quick side, but each hole had at least a little break, which made us all miss a lot of putts.
The rough was surprisingly thick; thicker than I was used to.
I loved the course layout and variety of different holes and tee shots. Almost every shot felt uniquely different and interesting.
On the front 9, holes 1-3 and 8-9 were more of a treeless "links" style with plenty of bunkers, including fairway bunkers, whereas holes 4-7 were suddenly "back in the woods" with fewer bunkers.
The back 9 was more of a traditional layout with more water and scenic views of the surrounding terrain.
Six different tees to play from (Red, Copper, White, Blue and Black, as well as a Blue/White option) to offer an appropriate challenge for a wide range of skill levels.
Quality on-course amenities, like plenty of drinking water and actual bathroom buildings instead of, say, outhouses or nothing at all.
Nice clubhouse with bar & restaurant and outdoor patio on top floor overlooking the course. The chicken breast on my caesar salad after we played was surprisingly well-cooked; juicy & delicious. Although, someone in our group complained about the long wait at the turn for a hot dog.
They also had electric golf carts, which I always prefer over gas.
Best course in the area for public play!
A round at The Jewel is always worth the drive. The only thing better is to play to course when the valley is in full fall color!
Nice
Great fairways, receptive greens and lots of wildlife
Lovely course well maintained
Long tee shots needed to clear heavy rough in front of fairways. Large undulating challenging greens.
Fairways well mowed in excellent condition.
Excellent! Glad the conditions were up to par. Come back soon.
the cource
The Jewel was in great shape and play was fast.
Happy to hear you loved the course! Come back and see us at The Jewel Golf Club.
The Jewel
Course was in great shape and always presents a good challenge. Staff was friendly and polite.
Thanks for your feedback! Glad we could give you a bit of a challenge!
Jewel Review
A very strong Minnesota course. A nice combination of woods golf and links golf. Approximately 1/3 of the course played links style while the other 2/3s was a bit more back in the woods for lack of a better word. All holes were challenging but fair. Didn't lose a ball all day and there were not many opportunites to do so. A nice amount of undulation throughout the course forced one to use their imaginations. A quality play, I just wish it was closer to the cities.
Thank you for playing a round with us! We appreciate your review and hope to see you on the course in the future!
Perfect Day at The Jewel
WE got a great rate, some mixup saved us even more money...the weather was fantastic, maybe the best day of the year. We got teamed up with a local golfer and had a great time talking golf the whole round. My wife shot her best round ever. And then we had a great meal at a nice restaurant on the lake, Nosh.
We are so happy to hear about your experience and that you have spent an excellent day with us! Thanks for the review.
A Must Play Minnesota Course!
I've played this course many times and have never been disappointed. Great service in both the pro shop and the restaurant. The course is always in great condition even out of peek season. The holes have many variations from links type holes to elevated tees, water and trees. It is carved beautifully along and into the Mississippi bluffs! The restaurant has excellent food as well with a great outside deck overlooking hole 9! Lastly the practice facilities are excellent as well!
Thank you for your 5 star review! We are thrilled to have impressed you once again. Hope to see you on the course again soon!
Great course to play
We love this course and feel it is the best bargain around. The course is always in excellent shape if it is their 1st day open or last day before they close. Well designed.
Excellent! Glad you loved the course and the conditions. Looking forward to seeing you back at The Jewel!
We go every year...
We go out to the Jewel once a year at least. It is on the more expensive side but definitely worth it once or twice if cost is your main deciding factor. The course is set up beautifully, they have a lot of room out there to do whatever they want. And walking should not be an option as the Jewel is HUGE. I wouldn't want to walk that course unless I set aside 4 hours minimum.
Top reasons this course is one of our favorites in MN:
1. Red Wing area means BEAUTIFUL scenery with the bluffs. On 14, you are nearly surrounded by these bluffs. We were lucky enough one round to have OVER 1,000 birds (not exaggerating) congregate as we hit our second shots this past fall. I will never forget that moment.
2. Great layout and immaculate care. The holes themselves take a personality of their own. There is a lot of room for the most part, but it is in no way an easy course. Additionally, the amount of land The Jewel boasts allowed the architect seemingly infinite freedom with the design (imo). One of the best Tees I've ever played is 10, looking down at the hole with a little water waiting if you don't get that draw just right.
3. Cost. It's up there, but if this course was in the metro it'd be $80+ for twilight. It's definitely worth the money if you're a regular weekender looking for deals. Not to mention it doesn't get much play except from the members, so you're not waiting around with another group nipping at your heels.
Downside: Distance. It's off the beaten path. But in this circumstance, with the scenery and the low occupancy, it's definitely worth the drive.
Awesome! Thanks so much for your detailed review. We are so happy to hear you made the drive out to play The Jewel GC and loved the scenery and had some memorable experiences out here. We are glad you saw good value in playing here. Come back and see us again soon!
Southeast MN's Best Public Course
The Jewel is a beautiful Hale Irwin design surrounded by gorgeous bluffs and operated by one of the most generous, hard working guys in the business. A great event and tournament host, with some pretty challenging holes, this is where everyone in SE Minnesota wishes they could play every day.
Awesome! Thank you so much for reviewing our course The Jewel Golf Club. We appreciate the kind words - glad you enjoy the scenery and all that The Jewel has to offer. We can't wait to see you again real soon!
