The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."

"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."

Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.

Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.

What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.

Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.

"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

Golf Disappointed Day

Golf course was over sold and very crowded and play was very slow. Had to wait at each tee for 10mins. Only got in 12 hole in 4 hrs. Disappointed!

Nice track, worth the visit.

Check in was seamless and painless.

Nice range amenities, range balls were included with a nice chipping and putting green for a full warm up session.

Indulged at the pub/bar prior to our tee time and it was a nice experience.

Course was in good shape. Greens were receptive but really didn't leave deep pitch marks..They rolled nice but were firm.

Only issue would be the spacing of groups. To have a "slow" foursome followed by 2 twosomes and a threesome and not being abke to "play through" is an issue..Especially with a few ambassadors cruising the course and not enforcing the "slow play faye"group to pick it up or move over...

Oh well, its worth the adventure and I would return its a nice set up...

Course is perfect just wish they would have let us finish the last 3 holes. There was still enough sunlight To finish up.

This course is in perfect condition

Booked a late afternoon tee-time and was fortunate to finish the round in three hours. The starter was kind enough to switch me to start back nine to avoid a four some in front of me. Enjoyed this course layout and perfect conditions. Staffs were super friendly and helpful.

punched greens

The greens were much more even and smoother, faster for this round

HOWEVER, i played a few days prior to this day, and there was a 'notice' on your golfnow site that warned, 'recent greens aeration'

I called pga west, asked when the Greg Norman greens had been punched,

The bloke said 'i don't see that they'll be worked on until JULY'

so i made my reservation and i got chumped

THAT first day i played, was like rolling putts through a battlefield. Slow, sandy and totally anti low scoring condition.

But this is 1 of my favorite courses in coachella valley

Its in immaculate condition NOW 🌝

Challenging

Classic desert golf! Absolutely stunning off the tees, with the majority of the shots incorporating some sort of force carry. From the tees to the green, this is target golf at its best. Great conditions on course, greens, and bunkers (which are everywhere). If you’re not controlling your ball this course could be a nightmare, but if your A game is in your bag, this course is a TRUE Gem in the desert!!! 2nd time playing and both rounds in the mid 70’s. Will return to PGA West!!!

Thumbs up

Never played here before and would come back. Had a nice breakfast on patio prior warming up. Facilities were solid; nothing spectacular, but had everything we needed very close by. Breakfast was delicious btw. Course was in great shape; I struggled to read greens which isn't typical.

Great experience

Played all other PGA courses before - this one was still at my bucket list.

Greens are fast and hard to read -> challenging.

Fairways 10 out of 10..

Layout - excellent. Especially 16th hole.

Ypu think you have seen any challenge bunker? Wait for it!

Alcatraz will challenge you again.

Course is closed and Greens will be renewed

Will come back!!!

Great value for twilight tee time

Played as 4some at 2:06 on a Saturday. Finished in 4:20 or so, so hard to complain about pace of play. Greens were punched a few weeks ago and sanded recently so putting was a little more difficult but it is that time of year in PS. All in all, would definitely recommend playing if you can find a decent green fee here.
