The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."

"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."

Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.

Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.

What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.

Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.

"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

Immaculate Shape

For the dead of summer the tee boxes, fairways and greens were in immaculate shape. Better than any other course I’ve played in last month. Really enjoyed the course and like it better than Nicklous Tourney or Dye Mountain.

Summer in Palm Springs

Very fun course. Lots of dry patches throughout the course but understandable for this time of year. For me it’s a 1 and done but definitely recommend playing this course.

unhappy.

this was my first time playing this course for my birthday round and it was no where what i expected from a PGA course and after playing the jack Nicholas tournament course the day before. every single staff member did not seem happy to be there today and wanted to push you along. despite really hot temperatures ( we knew what we were getting into with the heat ) cart girl and worked driving around seemed annoyed anytime we asked for water. there was no towels to keep cool offered or available till hole 5. no ice or water at the pit stop machines. best ice available from cart worker driving around was soapy water. cart girl left early about hole 6. we constantly kept getting told to pick up pace of play despite no a single golfer on the course in front or behind out group the duration of our round. and constantly had a worker just lurking around keeping an eye on us watching us play for some odd reason. and kept telling us they would kick us off the course if we played with anyone not in our group despite not doing it the full round. and the course being completely void of other golfers. it was not the experience i was expecting the have from something with the PGA name but the course it self was nice. not much shade but if you happened to out of the fairways the desert areas are pretty forgiving.

Fun Course, Even When It's 112f Out!!!!

Wasn't sure what to expect before I teed off. I'd played two Greg Norman courses in the past. One I liked, Wente Vineyards. One, I wasn't a fan of, the now closed Vellano in Chino Hills.

I ended up liking this course, a lot, especially after playing the very nice, but unforgiving Stadium & Mountain courses, recently.

Staff was friendly. Starter was cool. Played mid June and course was in very good to great shape. Even though there's less grass on this course than many other close by courses, I didn't think it was a tight course. Nor was it overly penal, I lost two balls all day and didn't lose my first til 16.

Pace was great. Played in just over 3 hours. Water on the course, which is always nice, but when it's 112f+ out it exceeds nice. Especially with the ice machine running🥶

The Stadium course & Mountain courses are great tracks and I'd play em anytime, but they're not courses I'd necessarily wanna play everyday. This is more of an everyday, resort type course. Fun even if you're not hitting all that well. Also, even though it's a "desert course", it still kinda had a tropical oasis feel to it. Lotsa water and some palm trees.

There are houses on most of the holes, but they're not really in play and seem to sit below the fairways, so even though they're there, you don't really see them like you might at some of the older courses close by.

I'd recommend the Norman Course to any & all. Rate was also really good. Well worth the mid June twilite rate I paid, $55 and change.

Excellent course

This was a great course for intermediate to advance golfers. Fairly open and forgiving with the added benefit of long holes to really challenge yourself. Course was in great shape, staff was amazing from start to finish. Couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Terrific Experience

Loved playing Greg Norman course. Great layout with plenty of bunkers and hazards but yet pretty forgiving. Firm greens, soft bunker sand and well manicured fairways. One minor “issue”: I was a single and got put with a threesome where 2 of them were VERY slow and probably 25+ indexes. Marshall gave us a slow play warning around the 8th hole. Problem was nearest group behind us was 2 holes back. Again, not a major issue but Marshall could have just given us the usual “how you guys doing?”. That said, definitely enjoyed the course.

Great Track

Course was in fantastic shape, great layout, challenging. You can't spray the ball all over here and score well, so play target golf. Only knock on the course is the greenside bunkers need sand. I was in 2 and they're hard pan with barely any sand. Otherwise fantastic shape and quick smooth undulating greens!
