The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."

"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."

Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.

Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.

What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.

Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.

"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

Fantastic

The course was fantastic!! Beautifully laid out and in immaculate shape!! Greens running 10/11 on the stimp and super smooth! Fairways were like carpet - mowed perfectly! Felt bad to take a divot.

11 out of 10 rating - felt like a pro out there

Definitely a play again.

Great job Team PGAWest Greg Norman

Thanks for a great experience

Pace of Play

The slowest round of golf just plain frustrating. Played many courses here over the last month and none compared to the slow play. We left after 13 holes as four groups were in the 14th hole. It was unfortunate due to the lack of rangers on course to move play along.

Great Conditions - So-So course

First off the conditioning of the course was perfection. Beautiful fairways and really quick perfect greens. The pace of play was also excellent at 4 hours midday. The staff was also very friendly.

The course, however was uninspiring. Basically a bunch of straight holes with numerous punitive sand traps lining most of the holes. I could have sworn that some of the holes on the back were the same ones I played on the front. Also incredibly easy to hit a good drive and have it run out into the desert since the rough was either non-existent or very short.

I would recommend the Stadium or Mountain courses over the Norman course.

Not PGA Quality

This course claims to be part of the PGA West family of high end golf courses; but sadly it does not compare. The course conditions were fine, but the high level of service and staff friendliness exhibited at other PGA courses was totally absent on the Greg Norman course. The driving range was only partially set up and several stations were missing balls. The starter was a jerk - rude and indifferent, refusing to answer basic questions about course conditions. There are no water or ice refills on the entire front 9, and when you do see a water machine later, there are no cups. After the 18th hole, nobody is present to unload your bags or even provide directions to the parking lot. On the whole, the level of service at the Greg Norman course compares more to a Los Angeles City public course than any of the higher end PGA courses like Stadium or Mountain, and I would not pay over $50 for this level of experience.

Nice course. Nice clubhouse.

Nice course. Nice clubhouse. There’s also a nice outdoor eating area with a good menu. The course is in good condition and greens rolled well. The bunkers around greens have decent sand levels with heavier style sand. The waste bunkers are hard pack. Pace was great on front and slower on back. Carts have smartphone charging capabilities but no built in GPS screen system.

Best of the PGA West

I have played all the PGA West courses, with the exception of the three private courses. Greg Norman course was my favorite, by quite a wide margin. The course conditions were nearly perfect. The tee boxes were great, the bunkers were maintained, and the greens were true - very fast (11 on the stimp) and firm.

I can't believe I have not heard more rave reviews about this place. I believe Stadium is overhyped b/c it's on television. Jack's Tourney course is nice but it doesn't hold up to the maintenance of Norman. Whoever is responsible for keeping this course is tip top shape deserves a raise. I will be back. Without question.
