The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."

"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."

Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.

Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.

What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.

Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.

Best of the PGA West

I have played all the PGA West courses, with the exception of the three private courses. Greg Norman course was my favorite, by quite a wide margin. The course conditions were nearly perfect. The tee boxes were great, the bunkers were maintained, and the greens were true - very fast (11 on the stimp) and firm.

I can't believe I have not heard more rave reviews about this place. I believe Stadium is overhyped b/c it's on television. Jack's Tourney course is nice but it doesn't hold up to the maintenance of Norman. Whoever is responsible for keeping this course is tip top shape deserves a raise. I will be back. Without question.

Favorite Course to play

We love Playing this course. Beautiful, fair bit with enough difficulty for a challenge. People are all so nice.

We love to grab a bite on the patio but the kitchen closes much too early and so many times even when still open they tell you they are having a private event so they can’t prepare food. This course and setting warrant a reason to stay after your round to enjoy.

Great Course Poorly Managed

It took us 5 hours to play 18 holes. Ranger was poor and non existent on back nine. Tried calling pro shop to complain and got VM. In addition, drink cart failed to tell us last call. Course is fantastic but poor management’s

Hello. I am the Operations Manager for the Norman Course. I'm sorry to hear the pace of play soured your round. We do our best to try and promote a pace or 4:30 or less. The day you played was the busiest day of the year so far which most likely played in to the pace being slower than normal.

Beautiful and very slow

I was able to play 10 holes in 2 hours and 45 min (started at 3:27pm); yes, very painful slow play (where were the marshals??)

The twosome I played with stopped after 9 holes. I though I could go around a couple of the slower groups in front of us ... but that was not the case. Just rode the cart in -- so I was al least able to see the backside :)

Great condition!

We got a great deal on a Sunday afternoon twilight time through Golfnow. The course was in amazing shape, greens were true and not too firm. The plants and water features around the course were very well kept and beautiful. Avoid the bunkers because they are steep and most require pitching out.

Always a great experience.

One of our favorite courses to visit on our annual 1-month trip to Palm. Course is in great shape, and staff are friendly and professional.

Cost is a bit steep, so hopefully comes down a bit but we continue to make every effort to play at least once...and this year, we actually got in two rounds.
