The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."

"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."

Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.

Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.

What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.

Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.

"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

Fine desert course, but weird rule regarding spectators.

Played this course with my wife, who came along as a spectator. We had to pay an extra $35 for her seat on the cart, which was expected. Played with 3 other individuals. After about 5 holes, the marshal came out and told us that only 2 carts were allowed on the fairway at a time. Wouldn't give us a reason other than "for the pace of play." The Marshal recommended that my wife have her own cart and watch from the cart path while I share a cart with one of the other players, which sort of defeats the purpose of trying to spend time with my wife. So instead, I had to wait for the other individuals to hit their balls in the fairway before I could drive up to my ball. It would have been nice to know this before paying for me and my wife. We did call ahead of time to ensure it was OK. Kind of dampened the experience of playing such a nice course. We were "15 minutes ahead of schedule," per the gps system on the golf cart. Finished "15 minutes behind schedule." They also make you share golf carts with a stranger if you are a singe. I can see that bothering some people for the price.

An enjoyable round of golf

This is a great place to play for golfers of all abilities. The course is well laid out in a desert setting with fairly generous fairways. The greens are fast, true and challenging. The pace of play was excellent. As you would expect with a PGA course, it is well manicured and well looked after. The staff are friendly and helpful. In particular, the lady in the pro shop who met us for checking, made us feel welcome. She did a great job of telling us about the services that where available and about the courses. We had a most enjoyable time and I would recommend this course to anyone.

Great Course

Loved the course! Nice to see a true desert set up. Greens were in great condition! Only feedback I have is the offerings at the turn. For such a great facility you think they could make more than a dry turkey sandwich as a food option after 9.

Best condition ever!

I've played the Norman course at PGA West about a dozen tines and the course was always excellent, but my round on 4/12/23 was best by far. The greens were too fast and pure for me, because I rarely play such immaculate conditions. I love this track!

Wonderful course!

Ive played 2 of the other PGA west courses, and like those, this is a wonderful course. Great desert layout with plenty of water mixed in, especially on most of the par 3s wich are fun target style holes. From Tee box, fairways, waste areas, bunkers, to greens, all were in excellent condition. Staff was joyful and professional. I had the whole clubhouse looking for my lost cell found (which I found) very much appreciated!! The course was wide open, likely due to Easter Sunday and hot weather. Yes I would, and will play, this course again. Challenging but not overly penalizing. Just perfect.
