The Shark's turned in what's widely regarded as the second-toughest course at PGA WEST - Greg Norman Course in La Quinta.

No small feat considering the developers of the neighboring TPC Stadium ordered Pete Dye to make it, "the hardest damn golf course in the world."

"There's a difference," said Jack Guevera, a golfer who's played both. "You might think you have it easy if you play the Norman after the Stadium .... But probably not."

Here's the difference: Dye tries to kill you at TPC Stadium. Norman only wants to beat you to a pulp.

Not that pummeling does not have its highlights. Norman's 216-yard, par-3 13th is the kind of hole that seizes your attention and lingers in memory after the round.

What little fairway there is curves around toward a man-made lake. It is also tilted down on a sharp angle to the water, giving the golfer the effect of hitting along a ledge.

Each shot is a tap dance here. You could not even get odds in Vegas on your chances of avoiding all of the deep, slanted bunkers that squeeze the mini fairway even tighter.

"Greg Norman wants you to choke," TravelGolf.com West Coast Bureau Chief Chris Baldwin said. "The supremely-talented, enthrallingly-entertaining golfer cursed to be forever remembered for his excruciating collapses wants the average hacker to experience just a taste of this misery."

PGA West Norman

One of the better courses in this area for the price. but beware $8 for a Coors Lite. More than a little excessive,

A Fun and Playable Course!

Paid $114 on a GolfNow HotDeal to play Sunday, 3/13 @ 1:48pm—1st day of daylight savings time.

Another awesome day at PGA West. This place really is a golf mecca, and it’s always a pleasure to tee it up at one of these beautifully designed and exquisitely maintained courses.

This was my first round on the Norman Course. Teed off at 1:48pm, paired with a twosome. Pace was great. Plenty of daylight to finish (in just over 4 hours).

Many say this is one of the most playable of the public courses at PGA West, and that may be true. The desert surround leaves room to recover from errant tee shots and approaches. Several times I was able to chip and pitch out of the desert and find the green with a chance to save par.

But there are a lot of bunkers, so expect to find a handful, as I did.

And there are a few challenging Par 3’s. Hole 13 is a tricky one!

With a multitude of tee boxes to play from, golfers of varying skill levels can find a yardage here to suit their game. Do yourself a favor and play this course if you get the chance. You wont regret it!

Marshall would not let us finish 17&18 @ dusk. He was too interested in getting people off course to close up.

Pretty, nice golf course

The only problem was they wanted us to stop at 16 to get the carts on in time for the cart people. Then they told us to play 17 and come in, it was still light out so we were able to play 18.

Good changes to the fairways/less bunkers and more grass!

The course has been improved in the last year. It’s in great shape. The greens complexes are just punitive. The ball will only stop with a really high approach or roll way off the green. Greens are perfect, just weren’t holding, which added many, many strokes. The pin placements were all tucked.

Best of the PGA West courses for me

Great value at $170. Staff was wonderful, course in great shape. Some of my group cursed the bunkers, but I think it’s the friendliest of all the PGA West courses.

Pace of play was 4:40.

Deceptively Challenging

There are some holes that are intimidating from the tee, and some that look fairly straightforward and inviting, but do not be fooled...they are all challenging. The putting surfaces were running @12 the day we played and with very firm greens you had to be thoughtful about where to place your approach shots. A lot of courses tell you to stay below the hole to score, but it's often not critical. On the Norman course, you better stay below the hole or a three putt is probable. The course was in good condition, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the amenities were first-class. We definitely want another crack at the Norman course. If you like a challenge, this is the course for you.

Great course, but they need to let people finish their rounds

I really enjoyed this course's layout and it seemed to be a little more laid back than some of the other PGA West courses. The fairways and greens were in great condition, even though there was a college tournament (The Prestige) the week before we played. You really wouldn't have even noticed, except for maybe some areas that had a few more divots than normal. I have 2 complaints though. First, the course allowed us to take 3 carts: my twosome, a single we were paired with, and a member. Despite the fact that the starter made no mention of this, a marshal informed us on the 3rd hole than we could only have 2 carts in the fairway at any given time. This was somewhat annoying, but it wasn't a huge deal in the long run since there is a lot of waste area that you can keep one cart in. The bigger complain is that the marshal would not let us finish the round. We had a 1:30 tee time and sunset was at approximately 5:40 (according to the Weather Channel) on our day of play, but realistically there was enough sunlight to play for a good half hour after that. On the 18th tee at approximately 5:35, the marshal made my group, as well as the group in front of us on 18 fairway and the group behind us on 17 green clear the course, all of whom should have been able to finish the round without any issue with lighting. This is something I have never experienced before with an afternoon tee time; you play until it's dark and then head in. The marshal's reasoning was that the cart barn closes at 5:45. This really shouldn't be an issue at a course that costs this much to play and was a pretty big letdown after what was otherwise a really great round of golf.

Monday at Greg’s

Course was in great shape. Greens were not plush green. They were brown and fast. Bunkers had lots of soft sand. Fairways were smooth. Desert golf. No rough. Just waste area. Windy during the afternoon. Fun day.
