The Hirsel Golf Club

About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2024.
Hirsel Golf Club, founded in 1948, appeals to all levels of golfers. The historic and picturesque golf course was referred to in one magazine as "The Augusta of the North."
Hirsel, a parkland golf course nestled on the Scottish border on the outskirts of Coldstream, offers great natural beauty and breathtaking views over the Cheviot Hills and surrounding countryside. It features 18 very different holes strategically designed to make the most of the undulations of the hills and valleys and the natural hazards presented by a very large number of majestic, mature trees and the winding Leet River.
The golf course measures 6,024 yards. Par is 70 for men and 72 for women, with both par 5s in the last seven holes.

Disappointing Greens
Lovely course. However, it was 'greens week' and the majority of the greens were unplayable. The course Pro said he was only charging 50% to visitors. How do I go about receiving a refund of £45 (3 players)?
Tined and sanded greens today
Arrived at the course in good time only to find that the greens had been tined and were covered with sand and to find that everyone else was only paying £15.00 per round whereas we had been charged £ 30.00 plus the £1 booking fee. We thus feel very cheated.
The Pro shop however did recommend that we approach Golf Now for reimbursement of those overcharges on the day. Very disappointed.
Stunning
I live 30 minutes away from the course and have done for 20 years - but had never heard of it! Is this a deliberate ploy for the members to keep it a secret or am I just deaf and blind?
Great course - really enjoyed the game and the weather was great when we played.

Unbelievable value. Very nice layout. Lots of variety. Tree lined pretty course. Considering time of year course in great nik. Rained heavily back nine and when finished all of said a cracking day. Highly recommended
Winter golf
Nice course, good layout and great nik especially considering recent weather. Friendly clubhouse .some cracking holes .lots of variety.will definitely visit in the summer if not before.crazy value for money.£13 per head. Recommend strongly.
Lovely Course Friendly Staff
I played here for the 1st time yesterday. The course is parkland and is in a nice peaceful setting. After a lot of rain it was fairly soggy in places but most fairways were good. There were a fair few winter tees in operation but all the greens were in play and they were good for the time of year.
The pro was very welcoming and managed to get us off a bit earlier.
A nice course in a lovely setting I will definitely play again.
The course was very enjoyable to play .not on winter greens yet but use winter tees reduces the length of the holes but still a challenge assistant pro very accommodating let us tee of early as tee was free .as it was first time on course gave us directions for holes which helped .due to covid clubhouse closed but can pick up juice and sweets etc at pro shop.will be back in summer to play 5out of 5
Very enjoyable
Thoroughly enjoyed the course today which was in excellent donation. It was wet in buts but we still enjoyed our game,
Hidden gem
Absolutely fantastic parklands course. The only thing missing from making this course fit for a European tour event, is a driving range and a chipping/putting area. All in all though, absolutely awesome course. Can’t wait to play here in the summer.
Cracking Parkland Course
Played this course as a change from my own. Course makes good use of the mature trees that line the fairways, hence there is minimal heavy rough and if you end up in there you are a way off target. Parkland. The greens are all readily accessible with a well targeted approach shot but some have sharp drop off at their rear so plenty back spin required. Not many are protected by large greenside bunkers and there are no bunkers that you need a JCB to help you get out. Some well placed fairway bunkers to catch the unwary. There is a crissing and crossing of tees and fairways at a couple of spots and care is needed as the tees are in range of a hooked/sliced tee shot. The course was in great condition as were the greens given recent heavy rain in the Scottish Borders and weren't suffering from the dreaded seasonal coring and top dressing. I was only 2 over for the front nine but the course had its revenge on the back 9 courtesy of the trees!! Lovely course. thoroughly recommend.
Scenic course
A great little course with the most trees I have every played on. The course benefits the straight hitters no need to be a monster driver on this course. Every hole is enclosed, condition was perfect, you would not believe you are metres away from the town. It is like playing in someone's well manicured garden. Thank you Hirsall. PC
