Dougalston

Would have given a higher rating if the pace of play wasn't so bad. Overall a good course a decent challenge.

Poor overall experience

This is a course at this time of the year that isn’t great. Every green has been cored, no warning of this anywhere along with 2 winter greens, even after speaking to the pro, this wasn’t mentioned, all we were advised is “we should have blocked these times off” and “too early for score cards”.

Every fairway bar 14-18 is a a swamp unfortunately this is due to the prolonged rain this week and the drainage being poor.

I would suggest that only cost made this course stomachable (£15)tbh. I wont be playing again unfortunately.

Excellent

I thought this course was outstanding value for money, very well layed out, greens where excellent condition for the weather we have had, very well maintained as the green keepers are doing a great job. All new sand was layed in the bunkers also. The course is a decent walk surrounded by beautiful trees and wildlife. The head GC Alan in the proshop was a cracking fella, very friendly.

Excellent Course

Great condition considering the time of year, greens are obviously well looked after. Tee boxes where obviously still being treated so a few mats on some holes but did not effect the beautiful scenery of the course

Amazing course layout and I had a blast playing this. The whole course was frozen over and winter mats were in play, but you could still appreciate the design and challenge some of the holes brought. I would definitely recommend playing in the summer, as the condition of the course was pretty decent in the winter, I can’t imagine how nice it will be when the weather warms up. Lovely staff in the pro shop, chatty and kind. Just watch out for dog walkers!

Wet and Dry

No buggies as the course had heavy overnight rain. Staff gave me a trolley and I was only one on the course at 13.00, starting as soon as the rain stopped, it stayed dry but the course had some standing water on the fairways but the greens were dry and played true. Great woodland course with testing but fair holes.

Not so good this time

The course was being worked on wh i i was aware of but these were green works which were fine, however the tee boxes were an overgrown mess. Slow play is an understatement and when the course is busy it should be important to check this or at least advise to let faster players / groups through.

I gave up at hole 11

Go elsewhere

This is definitely the worst course I’ve played in the area, I suppose it’s a what you get for £27 in the summer. Pace of play was slow with a ten min wait on every single tee while the course was pretty quiet, we played here earlier in the year and it was the same, we went back to see what it was like in summer. There is quite a trek between most of the holes. It has the potential to be a cracking course it just needs some proper maintenance, it’s just a health spa with a golf course. Spend the extra few quid and play elsewhere.

Nice course would play again

Lovely course.

It’s ran by Nuffield health as part of a large sports complex, something I expect may happen more and more in future.

Seemed very busy in the car park but was mainly for the sports complex.

Some great holes and some different too. Greens were good considering the rain the day before. The card has a map that found helpful. Some long walks between holes but didn’t detract. Was slow but seemed to be luck of me getting dominance slow a few tees in front. Really enjoyed it though

A welcome change

Having been a member of Douglaston for many years, it was a pleasure to return to find the coarse in such great condition. The last couple of years had seen the quality of the coarse decline, which was my main reason for cancelling my membership and moving to Balmore golf club, whose condition is second to none.

I’m of the opinion that Douglaston is one of the most picturesque and varied park land courses out there, and somewhere I never got bored of playing. Hopefully the current conditions can be maintained as I’ll definitely be back for another round.

If you’re looking for a challenging round in a beautiful setting, give it a try.
