Ojai Valley Inn
About
Opened in 1923, Ojai Valley Inn Golf Course is one of California's first great courses. Over the decades that the course has been open, it has hosted a number of professional players and celebrities ranging from Arnold Palmer to Will Smith. George C. Thomas, Jr., who created the Riviera, collaborated with Billy Bell to design the original golf course but Jay Morrish made the layout considerably more challenging with renovations in 1988. Ten years later, two holes from the original Thomas/Bell layout that were lost during a redesign following WWII were completely restored and incorporated into the layout. The challenging golf course is very narrow in some spots and it features undulating greens that putt fast and true. The layout is not particularly long but it requires accuracy and proper club selection in order to score well.

Great course
The overall experience was great from the staff to the course. The staff bent over backwards for me.
Appropriate tees
Course has great variety of holes. The par 3's are very challenging from the blue tees. Signage at the complex could be better for the first timer. Had no idea where to park car. The range did not open until nine a.m. so if you have a tee time before that you don't get a proper warm-up. Our breakfast was ok and expensive.
Love Ojai Valley Inn
I have played many courses in California and yet this is still one of my top favorites... Must go and play here, it's amazing!!!.
A little funky
Some forced carries, a whole lot of hills requiring up and downs and pretty much a target course. Greens in good shape. Although it was my first time, I played with 3 others who make it a point to come there. In fact, one was a married couple who belonged to 2 other clubs, but come to Ojai every so often for "the fun of it".
Biggest frustration for me was that I was a guest at the Ojai Inn and it would have cost me $180 to play; thankfully I booked thru GolfNow and saved $100.
Nice track, but not great
I had a decent experience, but based on it's reputation of being a great course I was a bit underwhelmed. I got a good deal on Golfnow, so for the price, not bad. I would play this course again without hesitation, but in my opinion it is not all it is cracked up to be. It does have some great holes. If you only have time for 9 holes then play the back. The back is much nicer and is what makes this course worth playing.
Great GolfNow value
This is a grand old course where Jimmy Demeret played with Buddy Hackett, Bob Hope and Bing. This place has a lot of history and pictures. We stayed there but even as guests the green fees are high. GolfNow has a great rate. I played two days in a row and enjoyed it. The greens are quite quick, I'd guess over 10 on the Stimp, with deep contours. Fairways are wide and the rough isn't a killer. They have bronze markers on the back nine describing the holes that were "lost" after the US Army trained there for WWII. They restored in the 90's, I believe. I enjoyed knowing that. The starter and crew were outstanding. I can't wait until I go back.
I loved this course
I took my son there and we had such a good time, we'd played it again a couple of days later. I can't wait to go back. It's a beautiful course, with a herd of deer grazing nearby, perfect weather, and an atmosphere, amenities and service like a fine country club. We had a great lunch before the round at their outdoor restaurant. It's a great spa experience for my wife as well.
Challenging and amazing
Don't expect this course easy just because only 6292 yards from a tip. Very challenging and it requires a smart course management. Ben Hogan used this golf course for his practice when he had played west coast PGA tournaments in late 1940s to 1950s. No wonder it's tough.
Every hole has a charactor and memorable.
You would not regret if you go there and play.
Company event, lots of fun
Have been to Ojai for company sales meetings multiple times and always enjoy it. The location is a couple hours drive from LAX in a small town tucked up in the hills. The golf course has beautiful views and is great for golfers of multiple skill levels. The food and conference facilities are excellent.
unexpected traffic
Always enjoy playing at Ojai Valley Inn but on this particular Sunday I was getting ready to tee off on the 15th hole when a stranger from off the street stopped me before I took my backswing (yes I was at address) and asked me if he could apply for a job?!
I looked at him dumbfounded and said ":why are you asking me for a job? I'm playing here not working here!". The drink cart lady drove up and he ran up to her asking where he could apply for a job. She informed that being SUNDAY that HR was closed and he needed to come back on Monday. He insisted that he wanted to get familiar with the property and wanted to look around, She told him he needed to leave. Was kinda bizarre and not anything I would expect at the Inn! It did kinda rattle me for the rest of my round and left a bad taste in my mouth. That shouldn't happen!
Great Course. A good challenge for even a low handicap player.
Hi,
The course is in great shape. Lots of holes with changes in elevation and hitting over gulleys and tree tops. Has that canyon setting with shots much like the pros are playing at Sherwood this weekend. Greens in excellent shape but not running as fast as I thought they would. I'd recommend the course and the Inn and Spa for a great weekend getaway. I hope to play there again soon.
Great course
The course was in good condition and was challenging. The course was in a beautiful setting overlooking surrounding mountains.
Interesting layout - beautiful scenery - enjoyable playing here
Having never played here before, the second hole was challenging, driving over trees to an area you can't see, not knowing what was there, then having to hit over a gulley to the green. Some parts were quite hilly, others were flatter. The first nine is more rustic, the back nine winds through the Ojai Valley Inn grounds. Had trouble finding the 10th tee - it was past the 13th tee on the main resort road. All in all it was fun to play and very pretty.
What a Beautiful Course!!!!
By far the most challenging, the best maintained and the most fun of any course I have played and I have played lots. The fairways were pure, the greens rolled true and were in incredible shape and the tee boxes were outstanding. My wife and I played 18 holes and because of great incentives from GolfNow played for free. We will be back as soon as we can.
Beautiful location but course needs TLC!
Beautiful locations and fon course layout. However, the fairways were very spotty and there were areas where there was mud even though there hasn't been rain in the area for months. Even at $69 it's questionable whether it is worth the value.
slow play ruined day
Marshals refused to deal with slow play. Course in very mediocre shape. A good course that is not being run particularly well and not up to the standards of the rest of the resort.
the course is very challenging with quite a few blind tee shots.
Worth the $69 a person that I paid. Got to take dad out for a nice round.
Local Gem!
This course is one of the best in Southern California that you can pay to play. I always enjoy my rounds at Ojai.
Kikuyu grass and tight. 10 Handicap, first visit
The kikuyu is REALLY sticky, will grab you club on your irons even in fairways. And Kikuyu brutal around the greens. It took me nine holes to get used to it, and it still cost me strokes chipping. Sometimes the clubs stopped short like a chili dip, sometimes bounced off the grass and sent ball flying twice the expected distance.
First 9 very hilly, hard to see landing areas. Second 9 better, very challenging. Several drives require long carries (over 200 yards) in the 18. Greens good.
Staff sensational. On the driving range an instructor was collecting gear, stopped by and give both my partner and me tips for several minutes. Jim the Starter has been there 55 years! Very cool guys.
We paid $69 with cart and practice balls included. Good deal.
Great track
I enjoyed playing there. The course was in great condition and challenging.
