Needs serious work
This is my favorite course in the area, and I usually golf there once a week. Unfortunately the fairways and greens are in terrible shape. Now it's a bit embarrassing to take anyone there. I heard rumor they hired a new greens keeper. Fingers crossed they can quickly get the course back into shape.
I find this course to be the best in the area.
I enjoy playing this course, it is challenging and can give the everyday player that exciting moment when the birdie is made.
I recommend this course to all players. The staff will treat you like a close friend and the pro shop has all you need for a great day of golf.
Needs serious work
We love this course and play weekly but are sad about the continued decline. The greens are horrible bumpy and full of crab grass. The fairways are half deserts and the t boxes have no grass. We are now looking to.play elsewhere and it won't be Sugarmill as it is worse.
Dreadful condition
Having played here twice before, we assumed it would be fine, but we were the only couple playing and I found out why. The fairways were awful and in need of rolling, water and grass. The greens were full of weeds, patches, plugs of sand and seed and reminded me of trying to putt on a home made putt putt course. Nothing rolled true or straight and this was a $15 round at best, but unless it improves drastically, then it's days are numbered.
Great Experience
I want to thank the owner (Scott) and the staff of Citrus National for their efforts to make this golf course a great experience. There have been many improvements over the past year that enhance the golfing experience. I like the improvements all around the course. There is a lot to be proud of…..thank you!
Needs work
Tee boxes, fairways, rough were burnt. Greens had recently been aerated and had weeds growing. Apparently they hired a new grounds keeper so he has his work cut out. It was in better shape a few months ago when I played there. Bartender was nice. Golf carts were fine. Free range balls and nice practice area.
Course needs rain looking like a desert and greens are very bad putts bounce and change direction.
Getting better
Greens and traps were in very good shape. Greens had recently been aerated, and fresh sand added to traps. Tees and fairways still need some TLC and water. Pace of play was excellent at 3 hrs.
Surprised
This is a great course, one of the best I’ve played. However it was really rough today, greens had jut been punched, and dry conditions had browned most of the fairways.
This course needs rain and the hurricane coming in two days will deliver that. I believe in a few weeks it will be in good shape.
For the love of God shut this down!
Please-it is criminal to stay open and charge a fee for this place. Yes, it has good bones, BUT:
There is NO grass on the tees
NO grass in the fairways
NO grass on the greens
DOES have Punched greens
DOES have up to a half inch of sand on the greens- IMPOSSIBLE
It looked like they put the flagstick in a bunker- but it was a green
Staff did not mention the aeration and sanding at check in
Because it was a ghost town the pace of play was fine
Very very sad
Course has been neglected
It clearly hasn't been watered in quite some time, fairways are dry and tee boxes are just sand and weeds. They did manage to turn on ALL the sprinklers on the back 9 at 1:30 on a Sunday afternoon which soaked me and my guest. Asked for a rain check, was told they didn't know how to generate one in the software so they gave me a few vouchers to play another time at basically half price sometime before the end of the year....
Course Very well maintained . Staff very friendly, good food. Will recommend this course for anybody to play
Course conditions were terrible for $50.
Closer similar courses
The rebranded Southern Woods course is located near US 19 and US 98 in Citrus County. The staff is welcoming and friendly. The course, particularly the tee boxes were in terrible condition, the worst I've seen all summer here in Florida. Bunkers were better than average for comparative courses. Greens were in good shape.
For me, traveling to this course passing other similar courses to the south, with similar green fees, doesn't make sense.
Feel free to try it out, but my guess is you won't conclude much differently than our rating.
Getting greener
Rain has been helping green up the fairways. Greens are improving, some patches. Tees are in tough shape, but no issue to play.
