Mayfair Country Club
About
Opened in 1922, Mayfair Country Club is one of the oldest golf courses in Florida and it's still the only course in the historic city of Sanford. Over the years, it has hosted a number of famous players including Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer. The layout is wide open with a traditional design that is player friendly enough to appeal to novices and experienced golfers alike. Like most older course designs, the fairways are wide but the approaches aren't very forgiving. Water hazards come into play on over half of the holes and you might be surprised by a few subtle but tricky elevation changes. Mayfair Country Club is not a formidable test by any means, but there are a few challenging holes that will make you think.

On the mend…needs help
This city owned course needs some attention and appears to be getting it, though slowly. Cart paths have just been redone (which was badly needed), carts are new since my last round there and the greens seem to have been given some love. The fairways and tee boxes need some more help. The clubhouse was taken down (possibly due to a fire, though I’m not certain). Things are being run out of a trailer, which works as a temp solution. Range is WAY too small…Drivers a no go). It’s a fun track that just needs to have some money spent on it. Gets a LOT of play by a wide range of players, so it takes a beating. It’s got some history…just need to protect its future. The day I played, half the course was closed due to path repairs. Clubhouse made no effort to limit times having only 9 hikes available, starter had no plan to control the shitshow that was taking place at the first hole (aka the turn). Hoping for a better experience next time out!
The back nine is closed for ??? Play 18 holes by playing front nine twice - would have been nice to know that BEFORE I got to the golf course or even before I booked the tee time. The lady in the office was very pleasant.
They have new golf carts. Not much else to say that is positive.
Not happy with Mayfair
We did not have a pleasant experience with this course. Wouldn’t be so bad but to top off the terrible tee boxes and fairways, the counter staff were unfriendly to the point of rudeness. The promised 18 holes were actually the front 9 twice as the back 9 is closed for repairs. Upon arrival we were advised to be off the course by a certain time (never heard that before from a greens fee course) . Then, the group behind us leapfrogged us with no explanation (they later apologized). Our first, our last and our only visit to Mayfair! Two big thumbs down!
9 holes closed
The front nine is closed for some work! As such the back nine is ridiculously slow. Still handing out tee times like all eighteen holes are open! Some holes had up to four groups waiting to tee off! Most of the back side greens were in fair shape! Tee boxes and fairways need more work!
Course was in good shape. I just wish I was told at booking that the front 9 wasn't going to be closed. We had to play the back 9 twice.
St Patty’s Day goof
First of all, my reason for rating has nothing to do with Mayfair or the staff at all. Course has some areas where they are clearly improving things, and the greens were actually rolling great!
Booked a reservation for after 2:00 for 18 holes through GolfNow, only to be told that we had to be off the course by 5. The staff was excellent, not only only charged us for 9 holes but gave us a free round for the issue. GolfNow should notate time issues / restrictions like this at time of booking.
I’ll definitely be back for my free round!
Fun track to play - Among the best greens in town
Mayfair is a fun course to play, and the greens are among the best in the area. The fairway conditions can be a little rough particularly on the front 9, however I find the back 9 to be in very good shape. The course receives a lot of play and can get extremely busy, as others have I have often noted, they seem to tolerate 5some and even 6somes which I wish they would not permit as this really clogs up pace of play.
Overall this is a great course and very good value for money, I have found the pro shop staff to be very friendly which to me is also very important. I plan to play here regularly!
Thursday sucks
When we arrived, we were informed we would have to play the front 9 twice due to a shotgun tournament. I asked why they don’t inform you about that fact prior to booking. They said, well this happens every Thursday as if I was supposed to know this magically.
Do not book on Thursday and you should call before booking any day because they move it around according to the starter.
Also, there is a propensity to allow 5 somes or even 6 somes on other days. They have a starter but no rangers to control the clueless players who tend to play there.
The golf carts are old and in most of them the seats are torn. The one we had this time was fun - step on it to go
then count to 3 or 4 and then it would move. The greens were so fast and steep it was not unusual to land your shot on the green only to have it roll back 30 - 50 feet or more and all the way off of the green. they need to trim some of the trees back off of the fairways
Run Down - Not Being Maintained
Played a warm-up round for a junior tournament. Course is in terrible shape - not much grass to speak of in the fairways or tee boxes. Range is only 150 yards. Clubhouse is a trailer. Carts are about to fall apart.
Good layout (with the exception of the hole at the wastewater treatment plant) that has potential but can definitely tell no money being spent on this course.
Mayfair is in the chest condition in years
This old course is in good shape. Other than running int a 6 some on the back 9, I had a good time.
fairways need more grass.barespots are penalizing.
