Colonial Heritage Club
About
Colonial Heritage Golf Club offers the only Arthur Hills-designed layout in Williamsburg, and it is also the city's only gated golf community. Golfers looking for a place where they can just 'grip it and rip it' will be out of luck on this course, which requires skill and strategy. It is a thought-provoking design where golfers will want to weigh all of the risk and reward options first. The layout plays through deep ravines that provide interesting changes in elevation. The golf course also features undulating fairways and large, fast greens that are bordered by strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards that come into play on several holes. Colonial Heritage G.C. definitely provides a good challenge, even for a seasoned player, but beginners shouldn't feel too intimidated. The golf course offers some room for error and the risk-reward opportunities appeal to low and high handicappers alike.

It's not easy to get on the green on the par-3 14th but if you do, you've got a great birdie opportunity. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 03/11/2020

Look at this, where do I hit the ball Photo submitted by Douglas5507193 on 10/16/2013
Ok, very slow.
I'm not sure why the reviews are as high as they are. The course is mostly good with a couple of weird holes, but overall, I don't see anything great about the course. It was in good condition and has lots of forced carries, but for a younger single digit player, this wasn't an issue, but for older low ball hitters it could be very frustrating. The real problem was the pace of play. In the middle of a friday I was expecting to play fairly quickly, but our round took over 5 hrs to complete, which is pretty unacceptable. I still had a decent experience, but if I knew how long it was going to take to play I would have gone elsewhere. Also, the course is in a retirement community, so it seems its mostly older residents that play here which could have contributed to the pace of play.
great experience
is course offers a great Virginia golfing experience. Many elevation changes fairways in excellent shape. Greens were a little rough due to recent aeration. Overall experience was extraordinary. It was so good we played a second round. much different than the Florida courses I'm used to playing
Great golf
I've played Colonial Heritage many times over the past 8 years. The course by far is the best in Williamsburg. My only issues today were the ball marks not being fixed and we were behind a captain's choice outing where we had to wait on every shot over the last 5 holes as the foursomes in front of us had to discuss every shot. It is a beautiful and we'll maintained course. BRAVO :)
Divots
This is a great course! The only problem is the amount of un-repaired divots on the greens. The foursome in front of us left a lot of un-repaired divots making the putting game difficult. There were probably 10-15 un-repaired divots on every green. Got tired of fixing so many. Makes a great course miserable. Just cant get over golfers not cleaning up after themselves.
loved it
Very difficult course, with lots of forced carry and blind shots. Playing the correct tee is crucial otherwise its going to be a long day.
Birthday Surprise. New Favorite Course
My wife surprised me and set up a tee time for me and my two buddies for my birthday. I have been meaning to play here for a while after reading the positive reviews. It was worth the drive from Richmond! I honestly think this could be my favorite course. The staff was very friendly from start to finish. Pace of play was excellent for a Saturday Morning. Conditions were top notch. Play from the correct tees to match your handicap and you will really love this course. It is challenging, but fair and that is what a "championship" level course should be. Greens were fast and true but held shots nicely. The course offers a lot of variety and I think I used every single club in my bag. You have to think your way through most holes and layup here and there to properly manage the course. For me, I prefer this to just hitting a driver, wedge over and over again. Get the yardage book too. I used it on almost every hole. It helps a lot with making decisions off the tee. Expect to score 5-10 higher than you would at a "weekenders" course but it is an enjoyable challenge. Not a frustrating challenge like some other "Championship" level courses I've played recently. Can't wait to play here again.
Not an enjoyable layout
The fact that so many people gave this course good reviews has made me realize something about what people consider to be good courses. It seems that of a course is in really good condition and is challenging, the more people think it's a good course.
I disagree with these criteria. My metric for a god course is its playability and ability to cater to all levels of golfers and still provide a challenge to the low handicapper. Conditions are important too but not more so than playability.
With those metrics in mind, I would not recommend this course. There are far too many hazards, blind shots, and difficult holes for this to be playable and enjoyable for anyone other than the best single digit handicapper....and I'm a single digit handicap. I would never bring my children here if they wanted to learn to play golf.
In fact I came to the realization after playing this course that any course built in the 80s and later usually is not very playable and I'll be staying away from them in the future. My advice to everyone would be to find a course that was built prior to the 1980s when golf courses starting getting overly penal and architects started becoming a lot less picky about the sites they choose to build on - it seems like they thought more about how much money the location could potentially rake in and not how the difficulty of the terrain and course would drive people away from golf.
All in all if you base good courses just on good course conditions and difficulty, then yes, this is a fantastic course. But if you're looking for a course and round that can actually be enjoyed and not stressed over and is playable to everyone, this is not the course for you.
Lastly, the pro asked me how we enjoyed our round afterwards and I was honest with him - saying what I'm said above. He seemed to waive it off and disagree. The fact that he did that really summed up a big reason why golf is declining in popularity today - what other business asks a customer what they thought of their product/service and upon a receiving a negative review., just waives it off and doesn't think honestly if they should change their business? Instead it showed that the golf industry is not willing to change or even reflect on its business model. And yet many in the industry scratch their head on why golfers are leaving the game and blame it on millenials being lazy and wanting instant gratification...to that I say: well yeah that's part of it because you've made the courses so darn difficult that it's not fun and you won't listen to your customer and don't have any customer service!
Maybe one day I'll have an opportunity to help design a course. I may not understand agronomy and construction but I think I can definitely help with the playability of a course design.
Thank you for visiting our facility and your comments. We do have a very challenging golf course that is in great shape.
I'm the Head Golf Professional, and I am sorry that your comment with my team got treated in a manor in which you felt was not a concern. In fact, it is a major concern of mine and I too would not be happy if a comment I made was disregarded. All of our gusts comments are very important to us. Yes, we have a very challenging layout and we are looking at ways on how to improve the play-ability of the course.
This year, we opened a 6th set of tees; our family tees. The family tees measure 3,000 yards and is designed to make the course more user friendly for families, beginners, and seniors.
As I stated above, we are looking at more ways to cater our course to the beginner, senior, and family golfers.............not just the golfer looking for a challenging layout.
Again, thank you for your comments. If I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at apalen@colonialheritageclub.com
Best Public Course In Virginia
I have played every course in the Williamsburg area over the past 25 years, best public course in the area.
Beautiful
Excellent and beautiful course in great condition. Challenging on many levels.
A Must Play in Williamsburg
Played on Saturday morning, as a single but was paired up with one the course supervisors, who offered to show me the course. This course offers 4-5 different tee settings, so this course can play from really easy to really really hard. Greens were pretty quick but still rolled well. Hole 5 signature Par 5 is a lot of fun and uphill. Smaller driving range but still great practice facility. I would definitely come back and play here again and for the money its hard to find a better course. Thanks again John!
Best course of 6 we played
Just an excellent golf course!
Wide fairways ( which were not so nice as we had to play cart path only due to extensive rain night before ), large greens and very well kept course.
Only one blind tee shot that was goofy I remember and the variety of holes was both challenging and terrific design.
Friendly staff made the day complete.
A must play in our books.
Gated facility
Wonderful golf course weaving through a housing community. Will need a golf cart. Very challenging, fair course with much ups and downs, and some carrys. You'll hit every club in your bag. It was in great shape in late June. My son and I played in 4 hours...fantastic!
Great place to play gold
This was my second time playing here. Staff is excellent. Really hot 100 degrees. Some water was empty.
Outing
Great course but disappointed there was no asterisk stating there was an outing that day. GN should alert golfers of that. 5 1/2 hr round is not fun and throws off rhythm of play. Staff was great and would go back pending no other "surprises."
Beautiful terrain and great features
Visiting from the West coast, I was very impressed with the course. Located within a retirement community, this course challenges the golfer while providing very scenic holes throughout. From water, trees, to even homes surrounding the fairway, you will be entertained the whole round by hitting blind shots and putting on the tiered greens. With friendly service and in great shape, I would reccomened this course to all!
the hills have eyes
First tee pretty straight forward then the course takes on different persona. Well worth the green fees plus more. Will play every time im in the area.
hilly hilly and it was hilly
A beautiful well laid out and very difficult course, thick rough, blind shots, forced carries, hazards and there isn't a flat spot on the course. very challaging
Great Course, Too Slow
Excellent course to play. Very well maintained and challenging as well. However, it took forever to play 18 (5 hours). It would have been nice to see someone out there pushing people along.
This course was in great overall condition
Great facilities, course in great condition, very challenging highly recommended. If I'm the Williamsburg area go play.
championship course
Course is one of the nicest most challenging courses I have ever played staff was very friendly very clean when you play hear you better bring your A game greens are fast rough is thick sand pits are bigit is trtruly a championship course
I play the course from the tips, the #1 HC hole is not a driver off the T, you have to play it with a long iron up the left hand side before the hazard. It's a challenging hole that needs some planning.
I am a 12 handicap and agree with you. Although for example you needed a 260 yd drive with a fade to have a decent lie on the #1-handicap Par 5.
And where were the Rangers to move things along? Not one seen in 18 holes. Retirement community, indeed.
But excellent conditions and a huge bright spot was John, the starter, who gave me spot-on tips that came in quite handy during play and he had a deep knowledge of the course.. Between John and the mandatory "Yardage Book", a $6 pickup in the pro shop, you can do well if you pay attention, play the correct tee (I alternated between blues and whites, some of the whites were too short to really swing a clue) and manage the course.
I used my driver on only a few holes. The 5-wood is your friend on this course. The greens are in good shape, and very challenging.
