TPC Harding Park - Harding Course
About
TPC Harding Park ranks among the most famous municipal courses in the country, along with Torrey Pines South and Bethpage Black. TPC Harding Park, which is part of the San Franciso Recreation and Parks Department, hugs the shores of Lake Merced in close proximity to the Lake Merced Golf Club, The Olympic Club and San Francisco Golf Club. Dating to 1925, it has a long history of tournament golf among its stately Monterey Cypress trees. Byron Nelson won back-to-back San Francisco Opens in 1944-45. The PGA Tour's Lucky International in the 1960s attracted winners such as Gary Player (1961), Gene Littler (1962), Jackie Burke Jr. (1963), Ken Venturi (1966) and Billy Casper (1968).
After falling on hard times, the course received a $16-million renovation in 2002-03 that brought it back into the tournament fold, hosting the 2005 World Golf Championship-American Express Championship, the 2015 WGC-Match Play Championship, The Presidents Cup in 2009, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship from 2010-12 and the 2020 PGA Championship, its first major.

harding park
amazing finishing holes, could have been better if the greens where in good condition.....
TPC?
I can't recommend the course at all, choose another that is better value for the money because this should not be a TPC. I didn't get a full set of clubs either and wasn't allowed to change putter :-(
Thinking like the PGA players
I played the course because I wanted to feel what the pros would do and it was a challenge from the manicured fair way and wind pushing your ball it was full specially when I invited 3 friends to be with me
Resort prices, Muni conditions
I hadn't played Harding in 3 or 4 years, as I consider it overpriced for what it is. Since it is now managed as TPC course, I thought I would give it another change.
What I found was the same old course. The course itself is quite good, and the mature trees are signature San Francisco golf. The rough is extremely sticky and if you touch the trees at all, it kills your ball - there is no slipping through those beasts.
If you are a San Francisco resident, this is a good deal. For anyone else it's very overpriced. The greens were heavily pocked up, enough that it effected many putts. If this were a normal Muni, I wouldn't think twice about it. But, at the prices Harding charges, it's not what I expect. There are quite a few courses in the area that cost half as much and have better greens.
Pretty good value
I had fun. Course was in good shape, actually very good shape for a public course with lots of play. Service for the most part wasn't bad, typical public golf hospitality. Range matts are terrible however, but that's a non-factor really. Really enjoyed the greens - firm, fast and smooth for the most part. Definitely walk if able! ...TPC HP is a cart path only facility everyday. Your pace of play will increase dramatically if you choose to ride.
*Note: always call before hand when playing an unknown course to see how playing conditions are.
Underwhelming
This is a beautiful property, but the conditions are not on par for a TPC course. They stack up tee times and Marshalls are hard to come by. The pace of play was very slow. The greens are frustratingly slow every time I pay here. Driving range is concrete with carpeting hitting off of mats. Finally the staff is not as professional as many courses I have played. In fact there are more staff standing around talking with each other than I have seen at any other course. In short this is an over priced Muni Course with mediocre conditions for a muni.
Harding-poor man's Olympic Club
Harding Park has improved considerably since TPC took over management responsibilities. On the day we played, course conditions were good, but greens putted extremely slow due to top-dressing a week ago (granted...they're getting ready to host the Cadillac WGC several weeks from now).
Having to pay $117 on average as a Bay Area resident doesn't make playing there worth it. Can play equal to, or better courses for much less (i.e., Yoche Dehe, Bayonet/Blackhorse).
Over Priced and Underwhelming
To start this is a beautiful property. The conditions are not on par for a TPC course though. I playedTPC Las Vegas last week and the course conditions, staff, and facility put Harding to shame. The pace of play was very slow. The greens were very slow. One hole was more square than round. Driving range is concrete with carpeting hitting off of mats. Finally the staff is not as professional as many courses I have played. In fact there are more staff standing around talking with each other than I have seen at any other course. In short this is an over priced Muni Course with mediocre conditions for a muni.
Saturday is gun range day
Played twice here. Both times on Saturdays. The gun range across the lake will get to your nerves. Greens were a little slow. The preparations for WGC is in full swing. You will hear and see constructions on certain holes.
Really great
Amazing and of course famous golf course. Great lunch. Everything great except for my game. Hope to play again.
Carts a non-no
Don't get a cart, it's cart path only and the group I joined made fun of my cart choice, waste of $18.00.
Match Play Hazard
Regardless of the tasks necessary to prep for the WGC, spend time to prep personnel for play/work etiquette...when to look up and pause.
Nice maintenance requires a premium level of customer appreciation and service.
Enjoyable day in the sun.
Great Course Slow Greens
The greens had lots of grass but we're not cut anywhere near low enough. I understand there is a huge tournament coming in 2 months but they surely could be quicker than this. The overall condition was good.
There was some confusion in the proshop about how the golf now booking is supposed to work but in the end the price was honoured. Staff were friendly even though questioning the process.
Too hyped
I guess I was over-hyped for this venue because of the pga tournaments that are played here. The course is definitely not top-notch championship quality. Yes, people can say what do you expect, its a muni course. But when you pay expensive green fees, you'll expect fairways/greens to be in prestine condition. Also, we weren't told in advance of a temporary green. Once and done for me.
Overrated
I had high expectations for a track with a storied history of hosting big events. Sadly came away disappointed. To me, it felt like a muni course. If you've played Presidio GC, it's basically similar, but less hilly.
Tons of traffic. Local residents and old timers get a significant discount. Almost everyone walks, thereby pushing rounds to 5 - 6 hours. Greens look like they've been stomped on by a herd of wildebeest...ball marks and spike marks abound. You could spend 5 minutes on each green pounding and fixing marks.
Staff was rather unfriendly and unenthusiastic. Come to find out from a regular I was playing with, the staff have a reputation as being cocky and rude. Practice facilities were closed and looked old and as mentioned in other reviews...off mats.
With that said, some holes were challenging and the rough made the holes longer. I will not be playing here again...nor would I recommend this to any of my playing friends.
Golf Heaven
I have played TPC Harding and other TPC courses around the US but Harding is one of my favorites. Shot one of my low rounds as conditions were perfect! If you are staying in SF business or pleasure I would highly recommend Harding Park as a must play!
Course in Great shape except the Greens
I've played Harding park before TPC and now after. The fairways have definitely improved since they cleaned out all the brush and extra branches between the trees. The cart staff was clueless and non-attentive to the fact that I was waiting for a cart to pickup but the rest of the staff was on their game. The rough was long, 4 to 5 inches in spots and the greens needed rolling which you should expect for a TPC run course. All in all the course is a fun and must play but needs the greens keepers attention like any other.
Special Day
I had three friends from the Midwest come out to play golf. This was by far their best experience. The course is challenging, yet playable. Pace of play was good even with cart path only restriction. Will definitely be back.
Good Experience, but Lacking Some Details
First of all, to set up my review, this was my first time at Harding, and I came from out of town.
The course itself is visually very appealing, those Monterey Cypress trees are so cool, and the views of the lake on the back nine. Also the course and greens looked very nice.
The reality once we began was that the course was wet, we were told not to drive the carts on the course at all, cart paths only. Which made our groups slower than even walking. The greens looked great but they were also very slow.
It also irked me a bit that the rate for out of towners is $175, but locals pay $60. Seems like a bit of a high disparity. Out of towners should pay $90-100.
Overall the course was a fun experience, especially knowing the PGA will be here in 2020. Our lunch after golf was also very good and the people were pretty friendly overall as well.
