TPC Harding Park - Harding Course
About
TPC Harding Park ranks among the most famous municipal courses in the country, along with Torrey Pines South and Bethpage Black. TPC Harding Park, which is part of the San Franciso Recreation and Parks Department, hugs the shores of Lake Merced in close proximity to the Lake Merced Golf Club, The Olympic Club and San Francisco Golf Club. Dating to 1925, it has a long history of tournament golf among its stately Monterey Cypress trees. Byron Nelson won back-to-back San Francisco Opens in 1944-45. The PGA Tour's Lucky International in the 1960s attracted winners such as Gary Player (1961), Gene Littler (1962), Jackie Burke Jr. (1963), Ken Venturi (1966) and Billy Casper (1968).
After falling on hard times, the course received a $16-million renovation in 2002-03 that brought it back into the tournament fold, hosting the 2005 World Golf Championship-American Express Championship, the 2015 WGC-Match Play Championship, The Presidents Cup in 2009, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship from 2010-12 and the 2020 PGA Championship, its first major.

I had high expectations for a track with a storied history of hosting big events. Sadly came away disappointed. To me, it felt like a muni course. If you've played Presidio GC, it's basically similar, but less hilly.
Tons of traffic. Local residents and old timers get a significant discount. Almost everyone walks, thereby pushing rounds to 5 - 6 hours. Greens look like they've been stomped on by a herd of wildebeest...ball marks and spike marks abound. You could spend 5 minutes on each green pounding and fixing marks.
Staff was rather unfriendly and unenthusiastic. Come to find out from a regular I was playing with, the staff have a reputation as being cocky and rude. Practice facilities were closed and looked old and as mentioned in other reviews...off mats.
With that said, some holes were challenging and the rough made the holes longer. I will not be playing here again...nor would I recommend this to any of my playing friends.
Golf Heaven
I have played TPC Harding and other TPC courses around the US but Harding is one of my favorites. Shot one of my low rounds as conditions were perfect! If you are staying in SF business or pleasure I would highly recommend Harding Park as a must play!
Course in Great shape except the Greens
I've played Harding park before TPC and now after. The fairways have definitely improved since they cleaned out all the brush and extra branches between the trees. The cart staff was clueless and non-attentive to the fact that I was waiting for a cart to pickup but the rest of the staff was on their game. The rough was long, 4 to 5 inches in spots and the greens needed rolling which you should expect for a TPC run course. All in all the course is a fun and must play but needs the greens keepers attention like any other.
Special Day
I had three friends from the Midwest come out to play golf. This was by far their best experience. The course is challenging, yet playable. Pace of play was good even with cart path only restriction. Will definitely be back.
Good Experience, but Lacking Some Details
First of all, to set up my review, this was my first time at Harding, and I came from out of town.
The course itself is visually very appealing, those Monterey Cypress trees are so cool, and the views of the lake on the back nine. Also the course and greens looked very nice.
The reality once we began was that the course was wet, we were told not to drive the carts on the course at all, cart paths only. Which made our groups slower than even walking. The greens looked great but they were also very slow.
It also irked me a bit that the rate for out of towners is $175, but locals pay $60. Seems like a bit of a high disparity. Out of towners should pay $90-100.
Overall the course was a fun experience, especially knowing the PGA will be here in 2020. Our lunch after golf was also very good and the people were pretty friendly overall as well.
Great municipal course!
We played twilight on a Saturday afternoon. Finished in about 4.5 hours and the marshall was urging us to pick up the pace. White sand bunkers are challenging to escape. Beautiful course with views of the Olympic club. Don't miss out on the great practice facilities.

I was really looking forward to play but what a disappointment . The course condition was pretty sad for a TPC course, greens were very slow and boring. Only couple of hole needs to think about where to hit the tee shot. Not a good value and I will not be back.
R.I.P. HARDING: DONT PLAY EVEN WITH A DISCOUNT!
The greens are simply UNPLAYABLE now. I repeat UNPLAYABLE. I played last month and thought the greens were awful. They did a sneak attack fertilizing and after you paid casually mentioned they had been top dressed. Covered with Rice Crispies was more like it. Harding refunded many green fees that day. They told me the greens would be much better by next month. The greens are much WORSE. DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO PLAYING THIS COURSE. THEY ARE CHARGING TOP DOLLAR. THE GREENS ARE WORSE THAN THE WORST MUNI. This is a sad day for me. I loved this course... R.I.P. HARDING...
This is a sad day for me. I loved this course. RIP Harding...
TPC Harding Park
What a fun round I had. I was paired up with 3 other golfers which is to be expected. The clubhouse is small, but I didn't go for the clubhouse, I went for the golf. The starter started us off of hole 10 earlier than my tee time, so that was nice because I read reviews that they never do that. The course is in excellent condition even with the horrible drought we are having here in California. The rough is a little deep as they are getting ready for the PGA to play there in 2015. The fairways were great, some were getting a fresh coating of sand but nothing that you can't play off of. The greens were also in great shape but a lot slower than what I usually play. The only thing I guess you can call a gripe and it is very minor is the Marshal who we only saw once the whole round told us that we needed to speed up. We already hit off the tee on a par 4 and the group in front of us was just walking up to the green (not understanding how we were playing slow and the group behind us wasn't even on their green yet, but I read other reviews about the same exact encounter with the marshals). Overall it was a great experience and had to play TPC Harding Park before I leave the area.
TPC?
Don't get me wrong this is a really nice golf course, just not sure if it compares to the other TPC courses across the nation.
Note: As I understand this course is always cart path only, so if you can walk, plan on it; It's easily walkable.
Greens and fairways were perfect! No challenges with any lies anywhere!
The driving range is space challenged, and has nets all around, but the putting / chipping greens are fine.
Pay Attention to the Trees
Very nice course that is well maintained and a friendly staff. Fairways and greens were all in very good shape. This a course that you need to play at both ground and tree level. At fairway level the course looks pretty open. The challenges is the overhang of these older growth trees on the fairways. It is not unusual to be in the fairway but have an obstructed shot because of the tree canopy and these trees don't let you through very often. Expect your ball to go somewhere you don't want.
Front 9 is interior to the grounds and somewhat protected from the ocean breezes. The Back 9 goes around the perimeter. Picturesque but also picks up more influence from the breezes across Lake Merced. Save some strokes for 18. This long par 4 will try take a stroke or 2 from you on this challenging finish hole.
Disappointed
This unquestionably is a great course! It's well maintained and has a somewhat challenging layout. The green fees are way overpriced if you don't have an SF residents card, but a good value if you do have one!
I would have given the course a 4.5 rating but I felt treated rather poorly and taken advantage of. Only when we checked in, were we told that "some" maintenance work was carried out. Since we had prepaid, we didn't have the option to just walk out neither were also not offered a rain check.
The "some" maintenance work turned out to ruin the game, the greens had been freshly fertilized with some heavy stuff which didn't let the ball run a true line. The fairways were heavily sanded; the ball would land in a cloud of dust and stop cold.
In my opinion, it is totally unreasonable to carry out this type of work during regular play, especially when charging the type of green fees we had to pay. We will not be coming back anytime soon.
Best Conditions Ever
I have been playing here for over 30 years and the course is in it's best shape ever - greens are a bit slow and rough has been cleaned up - didn't lose a ball all day - great playing conditions - bring on the pros!
Harding Park
Course in great shape. New Greens are still not fast but roll true.
Great course but staff is rude
Harding is a great course. Very good layout. Has the name because President's Cup and Senior PGA. Definitely a tour quality track. Course is in good condition, but greens were slower the day I played. Practice facilities are just average.
Staff is rude and don't know how to handle book a course, so they probably shouldn't be working in the golf customer service industry. The course was empty and I mean empty. 3 groups went out around 3pm and I broke off from my group and nobody was in front of me for entire front 9. The staff rushed me and acted like there was no space on the course. They acted like it was some major golf tournament on PGA tour.
I have talked to many people that live in the area and they avoid Harding Park even though they get amazing resident rates because the staff treatment to customers is so bad.
Supposed to be a TPC Course?? NO WAY
For a TPC course i was not very happy, customer service was horrible, fairways were the only nice part, greens were top dressed with a mixture of sand and tiny rocks and we were told there were no issues with the course and it was in perfect condition, i don't think so.
Pay the Hot Deal rate of $69 or less otherwise its not worth it. The range is off mats and can't hit driver.
Great course
Haeding Park is a fantastoc golf course in great shape. Would've been nice to know greens were being top dressed with sand when tee time made on golf now website but greens rolled very well anyway and the round was enjoyable. Pace of play was superb and finished in 4 hours.
Clubhouse, facilities and other facilities are mediocre at best and very dated. Golf experience lived up to all my expectations but everything else does not live up to TPC experiences I've had at other facilities. Food was average and overpriced. Bar staff was nice but counter top was sticky and the area smelled foul like it hasn't been cleaned very well.
Overall, I'd play this course again in the future but would not recommend food service or spending much time getting drinks after the round.
The coldest winter was the summer!
Great course in awesome shape. A little dangerous at times because of proximity of holes. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Bring a sweater.
Temp was in the upper 50's while the rest of the Bay Area was in upper 60's and 70's. Started play at before 3 and finished with plenty of daylight. This is a nice course but wasn't that impressed compared the TPC courses I have played around the country. For a TPC course the greens were SLOW. The range you are hitting off of mats with well used yellow range balls. The putting green and chipping green were nice though. This course you have to at least draw the ball on 4 holes. If you get stuck behind a cypress tree you are guaranteed a bogey. Sand traps were not consistent. Some were really fluffy and others were like hard pan. Tee boxes were not level and had to be careful where you tee it to not have a hanging lie. To me the price with the Golfnow was ok but not worth it since it played like a average muni, and for a TPC course it did not play to one. I would only recommend this course just for the history this course has.
Didnt they just renovate of all the greens... A tad bit harsh I would say! My local course did a complete renovation a couple years back and it took almost 2 years for it to really grow in nicely.
The complete reconstruction of 19 greens normally takes from 6 to 12 weeks depending largely on the resources of the construction company and weather conditions. Once construction is finished and the greens are planted, the grow-in process begins. Bentgrass greens normally take 14 to 16 weeks of good growing weather to get ready for play.... pump your brakes my man. In another year itll be better then ever!
