Monroe's Bear Creek Golf Club is situated in the heart of Walton County. It's less than an hour from Atlanta, making it a conveniently close getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The course originally opened in 1990 but in 2008 it changed ownership and underwent a major renovation that elevated its conditions to rival that of any of the area's best golf courses. The bunkers were rebuilt and re-sanded and the fairways were re-conditioned. Bear Creek G.C. has always been known for its excellent greens, which have a reputation for being some of the state's finest putting surfaces. The layout measures 6,585 yards from the back tees, which may seem short but there are some ups and downs throughout that will make it feel much longer.

Good for the money

The course has some construction areas and cart paths need lots of help. Holes 15-17 were confusing but overall what we really liked as an actual ranger to keep pace of play moving. That is key for us who play a nice steady pace.

Best value around.

Owners have done a great job with the improvements over the last couple years. Greens are always good, and the addition of a driving range adds to the value. Good assortment of tough holes and scoring holes.

Bear Creek will steal from you

This place will steal your money then refuse to talk to you.

I was a paying member here for a year and always paid on time and tried to do it right when letting them know I wouldn’t be renewing. I first gave notice to Tony at the front desk I wouldn’t be renewing on month 9/12 of the contract since I was moving away. He said everything was taken care of and nothing else was needed when I asked if I needed to sign anything confirming the non renewal. I then called again a month before the contract ended just to confirm I would not continue to be charged. Tony once again confirmed to me that it was marked in the computer I was not renewing and nothing else was needed.

The following 3 months after my contract ended I was repeatedly charged member fees each month. I would call just to repeatedly be told by Tony that it was a mistake and he’d get with Cole (owner) about getting it refunded and it wouldn’t happen again. This continued over 3 months. Every month was the same song and dance. I’d call, Tony said it was a mistake, he’d get with Cole and Cole would call me and get it worked out. I never once received a returned phone call from Cole. I emailed the course and Cole hoping to receive a way to get this figured out. At this point they’d stolen $300 from me. It seemed Cole was just refusing to return and call/email. So I ended up driving 5 hours back to Monroe to go get this settled one weekend. I went to the pro shop twice a day over a 3 day span to try and speak with Cole. Once again the front desk people would say he’s busy or not there. I would leave my name and number every time and ask them to let him know to call me. He never once did. Following that weekend I did receive a refund of $100. So 1/3 months owed back to me. I called there again to ask to speak with Cole to see when I could expect the other 2 months of payments. The lady I spoke to on the phone said she had to put me on hold to see if he’s available. However all she did was put the phone down and not actually put it on hold so I could hear Cole standing right there say “tell that Stewart kid he’s getting all he’s gonna get from me and to stop calling”.

The level of unprofessionalism at bear creek is astounding. I’ve tried calling more and even going by again but there’s no luck. Always let me leave a message for Cole and he never once has reached back out. This place is a scam and will steal from you

Bear Creek Golf Course

The course was in a good shape. The staff was friendly and helpful.

However, the way they manage the course needs to be improved. There’s no starters and marshals being on the course. All depends on the patrons’ behavior. We had almost 5 hours a round because of the slow group ahead of us. Each of them hit 2 balls almost every hole from the tee and spent much time looking for balls…

One more thing that made the players, who play the course for the first time CONFUSING is the order of the holes at the back 9. When you finish 12th hole, you can’t find the hole 13. In front of you is the hole 14. There are no explanation or further instructions… Thanked for the two young guys playing right behind us we knew how to move on.

Ignoring that, we liked the course.

Under construction

Bear Creek is under major construction. To the course manager’s credit, it looks like the construction is addressing some much needed improvements. I plan to return in the future to see the finished product.

The construction:

Currently, multiple holes had cart paths that were either completely removed and were being redone or were badly damaged. New tee boxes and other areas of the course were under construction. Huge piles of sand and other material can be found around the course near tee boxes and greens. Multiple holes had hidden manmade hazards in the middle of the fairway. One was a crazy manmade water hazard at the bottom of a huge gully in the middle of the fairway. It was not visible from the tee box and as evidenced by the dozens of balls buried in the banks of this serpentine water bunker, it was poorly placed (center of the fairway 50 yards from the green). It was also visibly under construction. The transition from the 15th-16th-17th holes was wild. You’re taken along a long cart path adjacent to the driving range and past a private training area. It was beautiful outside so the extra cart time was welcome. The tee box area on holes 2 and 18 was a mess. There are 2 sets of signs around the course that sometimes give competing information (15-17 especially).

The portion of the course not under construction was in decent shape. Greens were in good shape and rolled smoothly. They were very fast for my taste but were in better than average shape. Fairways were firm, turf was mostly dormant, but it is November. Bunkers were firm and sand was shallow. I hit one bunker shot and brought up a chunk of red clay. Some of the tee boxes were in bad shape.

The surrounding landscape is beautiful. Multiple ponds and abundant wildlife. We saw geese, a beaver/otter, and lots of awesome fall color.

Play was the slowest I’ve ever experienced. I was in a twosome and the foursome behind us caught us every hole because we had to wait so long for the two foursomes in front of us. I wouldn’t recommend this course until they finish addressing the changes they’re making.

Many of the Golf Cart paths were in terrible shape. Made moving from one hole to another cumbersome. 16th hole is awful. Greens in terrible shape with mats for your tee box. Some other very nice holes though and overall an enjoyable outing.

Great Service but Slow Pace of Play

Have played this course many times over the years, has some interesting holes with fast smooth greens and fairly good fairways. Lot of work on course conditions for some tee boxes, cart paths, etc still in process and should be improved more once complete. The owner/manager is a super nice guy as well as everyone working in the pro shop, very good service.

Biggest issue for me was pace of play, was very slow and had to skip holes in 3 different parts of the course or would have waited very long time to finish my round. Actually had 5 players in one group I had to pass after about 6-7 holes, then couple of very slow 4-somes that would not allow me to play thru. Was able to go back and play one of those holes later, but waiting 5-7+ minutes on many tee boxes for a late morning tee time not what I hoped for. Will definitely return again and look forward to the many course improvements in process, but unusually slow play based on my past experiences here.
