Bear Creek Golf Club

About
Monroe's Bear Creek Golf Club is situated in the heart of Walton County. It's less than an hour from Atlanta, making it a conveniently close getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The course originally opened in 1990 but in 2008 it changed ownership and underwent a major renovation that elevated its conditions to rival that of any of the area's best golf courses. The bunkers were rebuilt and re-sanded and the fairways were re-conditioned. Bear Creek G.C. has always been known for its excellent greens, which have a reputation for being some of the state's finest putting surfaces. The layout measures 6,585 yards from the back tees, which may seem short but there are some ups and downs throughout that will make it feel much longer.

Even with the rain this morning, the starter was able to shotgun the morning tee times and move us right along. The front desk staff was very friendly and the cart girl came around multiple times. They even have a bar inside the clubhouse and now serve hot dogs! The Pro Shop is full of the latest Srixon, Cleaveland and Nike golf apparel and footwear, too!!
Under construction?
My son and I played this course recently, and not for the first time. The greens had recently been aerated and sanded, but there was no notification of this at the clubhouse prior to playing, nor was there any discount given because of the greens conditions. The greens were absolutely horrible. it was almost unplayable. We’ve been having a drought in Georgia, and that hasn’t helped the grass at all. That being said, the greens were in horrendous condition. There is major construction going on with Tree Removal at the second hole and 18th hole tee boxes, which share a box. All in all, the conditions were far subpar, the cart paths were chewed up, pitted, and rooty … And the Marshall was telling us we needed to speed up because we would be slowing people down behind us, when in reality we were up against the foursome in front of us. This is the second time the same Marshall has done the exact same thing on a weekend day. Not nicely, actually pretty snippy about it. Just not a fun place to play. We may take a chance and play there again next year, but as for this year, for this amount of money and the marshal-hassle and greens conditions, we are done at this location.
Great layout.
Good layout. The course was maintained well. The cart lady came out often with the high temps.
Disappointing
Starter let the group behind us start before us when everyone in my group was on time for some reason…Caused some unnecessary back up throughout the round. Greens were punched recently without notifying us when we booked tee time. Holes were overgrown/not trimmed. Won’t be back.
Fun Course
This is my fourth time playing this course since May. It was a holiday weekend, which I expected it to be busy, but pace of play was pretty slow. My group finished in 4 1/2 hours.
This is a fun challenging course. The owners are doing a lot of renovations so I feel like every time I play the tee boxes are always moving and some of the holes have new hazards..
Overall I love it here, it’s my favorite course to play in the Athens GA area.
Small recommendation would be to serve creature comfort beer!
Nice Course Overall
Have played here many times, nice course overall with fast greens. Lot of changes & future improvements in process, will get even better in time. New & much longer tees on holes 2 &18 definitely add much more challenge to those tee shots on Polar/White and Back tees, must carry tee shots much further. Only real issue was pace of play, many very slow players & groups on this day taking long time to play shots & hitting multiple extra balls with players waiting behind, but normally not a big issue most days here. Course has relaxed & laid back atmosphere overall and owners/managers are very nice plus very friendly service in the clubhouse.
Tee box changes
They change the tee box on 2&18. Which made the holes longer way longer than they were. Still not a bad layout but definitely made the holes harder. If ya can’t hit it 260 your in non playable nonsense.
Bumpy Greens
Greens were recently aerated which gave me lots of opportunities to 3 putt many of the greens. The rest of the course, save a few tee boxes was in nice shape.
Great course, Nice people
Enjoyed the course, fantastic greens, fairways well kept. Only suggestion, think about put a grass tee box on #16
Super cool layout course! Very challenging course it’s not just hit a driver on all par 4s or 5s
Could find some trouble!!! A must try course you will see!!!!
Course Conditions Undergoing Some Changes
Have played this course many times, like the layout overall and very friendly staff. Knew greens had been aerated the prior day so expected some challenges there, but normally greens are some of the fastest and better ones of the courses I play. Course does have a good bit of maintenance & improvement work going on, but expect overall conditions will improve with time once they take shape and progress.
Course has also installed a new tee box for holes #2 and 18, which are not reflected on the scorecard. New tee on Hole 18 makes the hole a little longer and more difficult but still a fun hole, while the new white tee box on Hole 2 to convert the hole from a par 4 to a par 5 is FAR too difficult and long of a carry for at least 80% of recreational golfers who play white tees. I hit a very nice solid tee shot that stuck into the forced carry hazard area after flying approx 215 yards in the air from the tee, as a straight tee shot toward the fairway now requires about a 230-yard carry to cover the hazard based on my GPS data, extremely difficult for most golfers. Even as a 9-10 handicap very experienced player I will not physically be able to play off the new white tees on that hole, which is very disappointing. There is no good bail out or shorter route to reach the fairway without a lot of tree and slope trouble, so this change is very negative in my opinion. Otherwise, the course met my expectations and mostly enjoyed my round, other than working around some course maintenance personnel and sprinklers on various holes.
Cart and pace
They do not have enough carts for a Saturday. We had to wait about 30 minutes past our tee time for carts. When players finished then a cart would be available. The pace was very slow and the tee boxes were hard and in bad shape. I will give this course another chance but not for a while as it’s a good course just not well maintained or managed.
Needs Work
The course was in good condition overall, I just don't understand some of the changes. The scorecards don't match the course at all. The second hole is marked as 360ish par 4 and it played well over 450. The yardage changes need to be updated on the cards badly. Also the joke of a par 3 to make room for the driving range is bad. No tee boxes, hitting of of mats for a tee shot.
Updated layout
The new ownership continues to make upgrades and changes to the course , it's come a long way in just a couple of years. If you haven't been here in awhile I would recommend giving it a try. The only downside is hole # 16 a short par 3 that they had to adjust to add the driving range so I understand just wish it had natural tee boxes .
2 years Banned for paying to golf
This place is an absolute disgrace. I was shocked by the blatant racism my group experienced here from their employees. Despite being respectful and following all the rules, we were singled out and harassed by the staff for no reason. Not only did we get approached with a racist remark while playing the course from two employees, we were told to leave eventhough there were more groups ahead of us playing the course, they had the audacity to file charges against us. This establishment should be ashamed of itself. Avoid this place at all costs if you value fairness and respect.
Terrible staff and ran by fraternity kids
Terrible experience at this golf club. We were told to leave because it was "closing hours," even though we always left when we wanted to without issues before. The employees were blatantly racist towards our group and singled us out while other groups ahead of us were still playing and not told to leave. To top it off, we were charged with trespassing even though we were in the process of leaving. This place is a disgrace. Avoid it if you value fairness and decency.
I know why we don’t play here more.
Probably the best shape we have seen the course. Sad it started with horrible treatment in the clubhouse. We had a gift certificate from the toys for tots tourney we won for $50. Don’t have an expiration date so we asked if we could use it towards one of our rounds. The guy at the counter said he didn’t know what to do with it cause there was no number on it. And accused us of forging it or something with Bear Creeks leader head. Then apparently the owners wife walked up and he showed her and she just said no way we take this. I know course need money but we were just trying to use something we won at the course that did not have an expiration date. The attitude was jus lt horrible. We used to play here all the time and were treated well. I guess they done need our play. Very sad, we played there when it first opened and had a trailer for a clubhouse. As a business owner you would think it would be best to nice and customer friendly. We were ok if the answer was hey sorry guys but this is from last year and we can’t accept it. But to be harassed for trying to cash in a charity golf outing certificate just is not right. Course will be a nice neighborhood in a couple years with that service.
