Laurel Hill Golf Club
About
Laurel Hill Golf Club has some of the best conditions of any public course in the area, which is why it is popular amongst the locals. It is hard to believe that the club sits where the DC Department of Corrections facility at Lorton used to be located. The layout has a traditional design, but unlike older golf courses it runs a lengthy 7,102 yards from the back tees. The greens are lightning fast and undulating. There is defined contouring throughout the course, which allows for some interesting holes. Although the fairways are wide open they are still punishing towards errant shots. There are dramatic elevation changes throughout the golf course, making a flat lie nearly impossible to find. The course provides a formidable test for even the most seasoned players.

Great Course!
I’m a big fan of Laurel Hill. One of the best public courses in the area. If you’re a low handicap golfer, the black tees will give you a solid but fair challenge. They also have a nice range and short game area.
King of the DC/NoVa munis
This is a difficult golf course and operates at a different level (and price point) than other municipally owned courses in the area. Laurel Hill is long, long, long, so study the scorecard carefully when selecting what tee to play.
If you like your course big and brawny, this is your course. However, there are a few breather holes, like the short 7th par 4 and the wide-open and reasonably short 10th. But forced carries and extreme elevation changes will test you on 3, 6, 12 and 17. One drawback to the forced carries is that this is NOT a walkable course, as the paths take you well away from the direct line from tee to fairway.
The County does a good job keeping conditions here at a high-end level, but they typically charge high-end prices. There is an excellent driving range and short-game practice area available.
Great Course - Good Value
I live about 15 minutes from the course. Best course in Fairfax County. Good deals, great staff, nice practice range. I already booked my next round there, and I can't wait.
Just an awesome course. Great mix of interesting holes: a fun drivable par 4 7th with a thoughtfully bunkered green, uphill and downhill and short and long par 3s, a couple of really challenging par 4s (#3 and #17 in particular), some gettable holes that require a really good short iron/wedge in (#2, #10, and #12), two reachable par 5s (#5 and #9) and two that require 3 good shots (#15 and #18). No throwaway holes on the entire course. The course is in really good shape for the mid-summer heat and all the play every course seems to be getting this summer (greens do have a lot of ballmarks but the fairways and rough are well kept, the tee boxes are in great shape, and the greens are still above average). And the practice facilities are fantastic. Definitely one of the best courses in the DC area!
Great track
Great course. Difficulty comes from sheer distance. Plays very long. Ton of elevation change, more than any other course I’ve played in the area.
Challenging but in good condition
This is a good course but with hot weather, rain, and water some of the holes were very soggy.
Overall a high quality golf experience.
Excellent Course
Only completed seven holes due to stormy weather. Those seven holes were excellent. I look forward to returning to complete my round.
Great Course - Well Managed
Course was one of the best I’ve played in the area. Conditions were great, even with the dry conditions we’ve had lately. Big, well-kept range and all staff was very friendly and helpful. Pace was quick until the last few holes, but the rangers did everything they could to keep people moving. Will definitely be heading back here soon.
1st Timer
I thought it was a interesting course. Would recommend as nice course to play. Only course I played this year that had a cart person, yes she was wearing a mask. I am glad she was out there, I drank all the liquids that I had brought.
Fun, challenging layout
While I spent a lot more than I typically would for this round of golf, it was a fun splurge. Had a very enjoyable round. Apologize to the group behind as our group was a bit slow (but not too slow; still finished in under 4 hours despite hacking it around some). Definitely a challenge playing the first time; helpful to play with someone with local knowledge. Still struggled committing to some blind shots. Fair amount of elevation changes and good mix of challenging holes. Probably would not splurge like this again in the near future (Michigan golf much cheaper), but had a good time.
Challenge and reward
This course sits just 2 miles off of Route 95 and wraps around old prison grounds of Lorton correctional facility Despite being close to the city you feel like you’re out in the country with rare views of houses or development along the course. Historical signs that the Teebox is giving you a sense of the history of this area
The course has five tea boxes and it’s most important to choose the right Teebox for your game or you’ll have a frustrating around. Elevation changes dog legs left and right and pristine interesting greens are the characteristics of this course. course was in excellent condition
As many as five bunkers protect some of the greens and line the fairways turning an errant shot into a sandy par chance. Other errant shots will find their way into the woods or fescue but most fairways are generous ...however approach shots tend to be with elevation either up or down and you won’t find flat lies very often as you approach the greens
This course is a little pricey for a municipal course particular on the weekends however price value is excellent. Staff was friendly and professional ....pace of play was excellent and this is a must play if you’re a golfer in Northern Virginia
