The Club At Viniterra
About
Situated between Richmond and Williamsburg, the Club at Viniterra sprawls across abundantly wooded hills. There is no shortage of elevation changes on this Rees Jones and Greg Muirhead-designed golf course. There is a difference of as much as 70 feet from the tee to the green on most of the holes. When combined with the mature trees, the result is a tough layout that demands accuracy. Thankfully though, there are not many water hazards to contend with but there is strategically placed bunkering throughout. The golf course also provides a scenic round with working vineyards running alongside the lush fairways. In addition to being challenging, the Club at Viniterra prides itself on their environmentally sensitive practices. The golf course saves as much as 80 percent of the water used on traditional courses thanks to the use of a drought-resistant grass hybrid.

Punched Greens But Plays As Well As Any Local Course
*This is an updated review. For more thoughts on this course, see my full review from 5/28/17*
This is my first time back to Viniterra since last summer, and not much has changed but I wanted to give an update on conditions. The greens have been aerated so they are a little bumpy and much slower than normal but generally your putts will roll true. Otherwise, the maintenance team has done a great job with the conditions here despite minimal rainfall the past month or more. The Bermuda grass in the fairways and rough is still dormant and that can occasionally be a pain. But the bunkers are raked and smooth and the fairways are devoid of divots.
I’m still not crazy about the change they made last year to flip the nines. You start and end with a par-5 which can be challenging. More daunting is the fact that a large group of fairway bunkers now greet you at the first hole before your driver is fully warmed up. If you land in them it’ll be good practice since it takes some fine shot-making to not land in bunkers on every hole here.
Something I seemed to have overlooked in my first review: this course plays loooong. I generally play from the second-longest tees on any given course but here that means 7000+ yards! I’ll accept that I didn’t play from the correct tees for my distance (I was hitting 3w and hybrids on every par-4, save 17) but the tees in front of me still measure nearly 6700 yards, so just reaching the green in regulation can be quite a challenge.
For me the challenge is a fun one and I still highly recommend this course to others. Just come prepared to spend a lot of time digging out of bunkers and using those longer clubs in your bag!
Cold and windy
Never a fan of cart path only and don’t think it was needed. Course layout is amazing! Still needs a month before it’s worthy of 65$
Punched Greens
The course played hard. The greens had been airated , some of the sand traps had sand that was not ranked. The sand was heavy as if they just dumped a truck load of sand in the trap. The replay was $15 dollars from 9 holes.
Be good in two weeks
Greens were aerated not that long ago and cold weather not helping grass grow in yet. At least the fee for playing was commensurate with the conditions. Greens still sandy and grass around the greens is still dormant. Should be in good shape in a few weeks. Wind was brutal and made it an extra challenge.
Course Work
The course was getting worked on which resulted in all holes having sand slightly placed on preventing true ball travel to hole
Good Time
Overall course was in good shape. Pace. Of play was great. Enjoyed the day.
Cold but fun
We played on a day that never broke into the 50's. Course was in very good condition considering all of the recent wet weather the area has had. Greens played a little slow but I know they will be in great shape when the weather breaks. All in all I will definitely play this challenging course again! Makes you hit the driver several times.
Great course, unfriendly counter
I played this course two Fridays in a row. I dont know if the second Friday (March 2) was “grumpy day” but the dude working the counter pretty much made it seem like he didnt want ANYBODY to be there that day. It was a day of high winds. Even after we were done 18 and at our cars, he came running out of the pro shop and rushed us to get our stuff out of our cart and hustle us into our cars. Ive never felt like i was less welcome on any other course. I tried to make small talk, you could easily tell the guy was agitated, and will not recommend this course to anyone based off of this experience. I loves the course too, but in this day and age, if you are a golf course, you need golfers to stay in business. Not a rude counter jockey who is on his high horse.
Damper Day
Course was wet due rain. Cart path only but overall was not bad. Finished 18 holes in 4.5 hrs. Had a great day despite the wet conditions.
Unusual Hot Golf in February
I enjoyed record-setting temperatures playing golf at Viniterra. Unfortunately the course was still pretty wet and play was restricted to cart path only for carts. Consequently, this meant extra walking and several ball drops to avoid standing water conditions. I've played this course before in the summer under normal conditions and it was great. I won't be back without knowing that carts are allowed on the fairways.
A good day
Winter time, little grass in the fairways but always a fun track
I'm sure it was soaked but we are drying out now. See you soon.
Cold Day
Was cold and Course was wet due to rain. Path only access. Nice and sunny and had a great time was the day warmed up
Viniterri
Pace of play was good and Course was maintained and in good shape.

This is a great course; but you must select the tee boxes that fit your game. No harm in moving up!
russelld1948,
Great advice! Thanks for coming out!
