The Club At Viniterra
About
Situated between Richmond and Williamsburg, the Club at Viniterra sprawls across abundantly wooded hills. There is no shortage of elevation changes on this Rees Jones and Greg Muirhead-designed golf course. There is a difference of as much as 70 feet from the tee to the green on most of the holes. When combined with the mature trees, the result is a tough layout that demands accuracy. Thankfully though, there are not many water hazards to contend with but there is strategically placed bunkering throughout. The golf course also provides a scenic round with working vineyards running alongside the lush fairways. In addition to being challenging, the Club at Viniterra prides itself on their environmentally sensitive practices. The golf course saves as much as 80 percent of the water used on traditional courses thanks to the use of a drought-resistant grass hybrid.

Great Course
Greens very nice, fairways in good shape and tee boxes were a little dry. Very challenging, but fair course. Need to choose the correct tee boxes to enjoy their round. Would definitely play again.
Slow Play
They claim a pace of play at 4 1/2 hours, but they do not enforce it. The round today was over 5 hours. We saw the ranger 1 time today, we expressed our frustration with pace of play but he failed to move the slow group up a hole, so we waited on every shot on the back. The layout is great and hole variety is outstanding.
Rckmcl,
We apologize for the trouble with pace of play when you played! With 9.5 miles of cart path, it is something that we work on and try to improve on every day. We hope to continue to improve on speeding up play in the future! We hope to see you soon!
Sincerely,
Management
Beligerent Pro
On the first tee there is a vineyard. I have played the course many times in the last two years and have been told ONCE to do a free drop if you go in there. At no time has the staff or the head pro say DO NOT GO IN TO Retrieve Your Ball. There is one small sign that says this and if you come in from in the wrong angle it is not seen. The head pro was belligerent about his sign being seen. At the end of the round we needed a LOCAL ruling as a sign said keep off the grass and use local rule. WHAT IS THE LOCAL RULE. Asked the HEAD PRO and he said 1) No one hits in there, 2) There is NO sign. He was rude and should take customer service classes. I will be back but hope the staff is friendlier.
gumby3205,
Sorry to hear about your experience with the staff member when discussing the vineyards on the first hole. Sometimes a local rule sets even the rules guys off a bit! I hope to host you again soon!

Uphill battle
This course is in great condition this Summer. Very challenging course and long. The greens were so smooth and the rough was not too difficult. Friendly staff in the clubhouse. Will play again this Fall.
Vini Vidi......
Had a bit of a time on the greens, as they have been recently aerated, but we managed to have some fun on this course.
I wouldn't recommend anyone play it alone for the first time, as some holes are a bit tricky, with hazards out of sight of the tee box.
jdrupel,
Can't wait to host you again after the greens have healed!

Great Track
This course has a really great layout lots of sand traps and forced carries. Very scenic with some really neat wooden bridges lots of hills making for great change in liies. Making hitting the generous fairways a premium. Greens are not in the best condition lots of unfixed divots and dead spots and they were slow. Aeration and some rolling could really help them. It appears that lack of play and slow development in the area may be their biggest problems.
artbarbkc,
Thanks for playing while you were in town! Unfortunately, the issue with lots of play and being busy is golfers who do not fix ball marks! And funny that you brought it up but we actually did our scheduled aeration today (8/21). Our biggest issue is definitely golfers who do not fix their ball marks after approach shots. See you again soon!

Outstanding golf course
I've played over 100 golf courses around the country and Viniterra is on my top 10 list. Every hole is beautifully designed and provides a fun test of golf. It's a difficult track but completely fair. The conditions are always good and they manage the pace of play very well. Needless to say, I highly recommend it.

Vinterra
This was my second time on this course and I took an out of town friend for his first time. We both loved it. My friend was really pleased and actually shot his best round ever. The course is well maintained and beautiful. There was plenty of challenge without being discouraging. I highly recommend this course.
True gem of a course
Maybe it is just my opinion, but I firmly believe this is the best course in the Richmond area. The course is always in great shape, and the staff is friendly. The course is not packed on the sides with houses, and the cart rides through the woods is great on a hot day. It is not uncommon to see wild turkey or deer on the course or nearby in the woods. The course can be challenging with the elevation changes, sloped greens, and forced carries on some holes - but that just adds to the charm and fun of the course. I try to play here as often as I can.

All Natural
Love the natural feel of this course. Every hole is a world of its own . Drives between green to next tee relaxing , cool and all through the woods. Tee boxes abound, so easy to pick your own challenge. Greens were in fantastic shape considering all the heat . As good or better than any other greens in the area that I have played in last couple months. Traps a little inconsistent, which can be a problem considering the number of traps and strategically placed . Layout is very interesting and offer doglegs left right , elevation changes and some sloping fairways . Not very many forced carries , and the challenge of the greens is the slope. You will be putting either downhill or up. Do not go long. All the problems around the greens are behind . If you have played before the flipping front to back nines confusing at first . Nice drive for us , so don't get here as often as would like and I remember courses 1-18 , so had me little confused, but as said earlier each hole its own little world , so once on tee remember how I like to attack each. The young gentleman at checkin and the young lady driving drink cart were as friendly and welcoming as possible and added to the overall great day. The young lady driving drink cart passed us at least 6 times , so as soon as you might think time for a drink she was there. Will be nice when clubhouse complete , that is the one thing this course has sorely needed, a 19th hole. Great course in great shape .
Speedblade54,
Thank you for the kind words again! Thanks for coming back and playing the flipped 9's!

A Rees Jones gem
My wife and I played this course on vacation, and it reinforced my belief that Rees Jones is truly one of the greatest course architects today. The layout was tremendous, with challenging slopes, doglegs, and bunkers that were placed perfectly to catch shots not perfectly struck. Despite the drought in the area the course was in beautiful condition, and the greens were the best that we played in the area during our one week stay. There were two negatives, neither of which was under their control. It poured the day before our round and we played cart paths only, which is very tough on this course with all of the hills. Secondly, the poor rating for amenities is due to the fact that they are in the process of building a clubhouse/proshop to be opened next year. However, you go to a course like this for the golf, which was fantastic.
u000004479059,
Thank you for the kind words! We hope to see you again soon! The clubhouse construction is coming along nicely and we can't wait to be in.
