Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

A Good Track
Original Houston Country Club. Not much grass giving great bounce and roll. Bunkers! There's plenty of them. Nobody rakes after their shot(s). Here's why. The grounds crew places the rakes on the highest/steepest banks where nobody enters or exits. The rake handles are too short. The rake is too narrow. For those characteristics, people figure that raking is not worth the effort.
Awesome Course
There’s not a clubhouse but the course is so nice that you won’t even notice. Definitely the best course in the area and the staff is very friendly.
Great course for the value
The putting greens are very enjoyable and in great shape. The Pin positions were ideally place and felt like playing on a PGA Tour. Highly recommended.
Only other feedback is to improve staff friendliness..as at the end of the round with a just few cars on the parking lot..they were rude in not allowing the carts near the car to unload the golf equipment, when a lot of other folks during the start of the round were taking the carts. Double standard
Clubhouse, driveway, & parking lot needed
Excellent and I mean excellent job renovating the course. Great job & great job maintaining it. I’ve played this course since 97 so I know what it use to look like & how poorly it drained after a rain. Could not believe the course was 90 degrees after the downpours the previous day. Bunkers and most fairways were completely drained and mostly dry. Amazing. Now please fix the driveway and parking lot because nothing has changed in that area since 97. If you’re going to knock down an existing clubhouse please show the course some love and erect a replacement that you can gain some income from for weddings, special events, and taco Thursdays. No one wants to hold any type of tournament out of a trailer. Please this is Texas not New York. We don’t hold tournaments or quinceaneras out of a trailer with port a potty’s next to it.
I had to bust my butt to shoot 88
I’m 70 and thought I could play the white tees on a day so gusty I had to put my floppy hat in my bag. The silver tees ended up a better choice after seven holes. The greens are well kept and the fringes are shaved with slopes resembling a U.S Open course. If you don’t pitch a ball on to the green, you risk your ball rolling back to your feet. You also risk putting beyond the hole and down off the green. This course is in the process of a makeover as far as clubhouse facilities. The marshalls are great.
Gus Is Good
Enjoyed Playing Gus during the week as the course was not that crowded and pace was just under 4 hrs. The course is in pretty good shape . we were 90 degrees off the path on Tuesday after the snowy/rain weekend. Impressed with the drainage! greens were pretty quick but not lightning fast. Carts were clean and sanitized . Starter was friendly and helpful. Enjoyed it.
Concrete in bunkers be warned!
First time playing this course and even though the condition and layout is one of the best in the area I will never play this course again. I hit a wedge into the front greenside bunker on 18 and it plugged. Took an aggressive swing at it, as it was towards the front lip and my club stopped on impact. My hands still sting from the impact and my club is completely torn up. I’m lucky I didn’t break my wrist.
Pretty Golf Course
My husband and I played this course for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it. Course is tree lined and pretty with challenging greens. Everyone we met, from players to staff were so nice. We will definitely be back.
