Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

great course, not so challenging, apart from the few holes alongside a busy road...watch that slice, or hook for the leftie.
Pro was a bit curt, assuming he was having an off day, but he was the only thing that was 'off' on the day
Great Course
Awesome Course had a great time out there!!! Starter was kind of an a hole but other than that the staff was nice I’ll def be back!!!
Hot Round at the Gus!
Hot Deal Time on a Monday did not disappoint!. The starter was very accommodating considering we had a player running late. He worked us in perfectly. Covid rules were being followed by all. The cart was clean, but I still wiped it down. The course was in excellent shape from Fairway to green. The greens were running pretty quick and putted smoothly. Great time other than the heat. Bring plenty of ice and water.
Great course/ poor staff
Overall, the course was in great shape. Greens were rolled and fast which was nice. Now the staff ( specifically the start ) was something else. Rude tight from the get go. He asks if I was a walk on I said I had a 1020 tee time which he then says “ then Give me your ticket” and despite it being 15 mins before my tee time starts getting extra attitude because my second player wasn’t right next to me. Then as he is trying to find the group who’s tee time was up he called out and a kid 1/3 of his age comes speeding over to admonish him. Course= 4 stars. Staff would get a negative if possible
renovations revived this track...
I had heard that Gus Wortham had been brought back to life with a much needed renovation. That was an understatement.
The good:
The course is in great condition. The greens are still very firm and hopefully they'll soften a little bit to be at least somewhat receptive. If not, oh well, you will need to make the adjustment! They rolled very well, nice and smooth. Good grass everywhere, and the bunkers were as they should be.
Don't think at this yardage that this will be a simple round. The shorter card distance is an illusion. It plays plenty long, with several of the long par 4s being absolute bears from the back..
The not so good:
Sadly, the course is operating out of temporary trailers, is completely understaffed, and somewhat disorganized. I know it's a muni, expectations shouldn't be that high. I'll leave it at that and give them a chance to get that part figured out. Not a huge deal for me, as the golf is why I'm there.
If you haven't been out to the "new Gus Wortham," you are missing out! I fully recommend that you give it a go.
Love this course
This course is a hidden gem. I love this course and layout. The greens are very nice. Several of the holes are beautiful. Everyone should play this course.
Great shape
Today was my first time playing since the renovation. The course conditions were fantastic,. Pace of play got a little slow on the back nine, but we still finished under 4 hours I believe. I’m not a big fan of the holes that run along the side of the road. I couldn’t get the image of me pounding my ball through a windshield of a passing car out of my head during my swing and held back on my drives (pulling them left). For those of you mentally stronger than me with a better game, it won’t be an issue, but I found it distracting. Because of that, this course won’t likely go in my rotation.
Our first time to play the course was a pleasant surprise. Very good layout and course conditions. I liked the elevation changes which you can not find that in Houston area. The parking lot is a little rough and there is limited food and beverage options. We will be back to play the challenging course.
Hands down one of the best courses in town
I was late for my tee time and the starter was more than accomadating in holding my group a few minutes so I could tee off. Even driving after one of our group members that had started to walk off down the fairway not knowing I had arrived late. I am writing this review to specifically to recognize that starter. The staff is the most friendly in town. The course is in great shape as it always is. They no longer have raised cups but a pool noodle at the bottom of the cup. Can't wait to return.
Starter was great. Had everything very controlled. Gave great tips and guidance. He made it a very nice experience. Great job!
The course is in good condition. This course is the best value for money compared to even other expensive courses.
