Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

Gus Review
Course has come along way since I started playing there in the 80"s. The remodel of the course is excellent. The staff could let the fairway thicken up a little more. Front 9 greens fast back 9 a little slower.
Great course conditions.
Our weekly group have played the renovated course now several times, this by far is our favorite course in houston. Conditions have been 5star, nothing negative to report about anything. I am sure though the driveway into the parking lot will eventually be paved. I have only seen the lunch bbq trailer open once on a friday, guess it must be only limited on weekends, not fridays. Bring hearty snacks.
Perfect day for golf
There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. A 5 mph wind with the 70 degree day was perfect day to go out and score my best round on Gus. Best score until I got greedy on number 18 and ended with a triple. The course is in great shape. Only issue I would consider is the greens are not consistent because no one repairs their pitch marks. Gus has a wonderful maint person that goes around fixing divots. Considering it is a public course I would rate the green in same condition as every public course in Houston. New layout is fun and forgiving. Until you’re paired with a 35 handicap player. I found out today the fairways just can not get big enough. Still a fun day for me...not so much for the beginner. We’ve all been there so grin and encouragement all I could do.
Bitter cold but fun
First time back since Gus renovated. Layout basically the same just more open with bigger better bunkers. It was 45 degrees when we started with a 5-10 mph wind that just got colder as the day went on. It was fun layout. Would have been even more fun if I could stay out of the new bunkers. Greens in best shape I’ve ever seen them. Not fast fast but fast.
Great Course
The weather was great and the course was even better. I had a blast playing today with a good group of guys. Can’t wait to return.
Best Value Course
I love playing Gus Wortham. I did not get a chance to play it before the renovations, however I have heard the war stories. Gus is in impeccable shape and the layout could not be more fun. Yes, it is a little shorter, but the undulating greens and copious amounts of bunkers make for a challenging course. The greens are the most impressive public course greens I have ever played. There are false fronts hidden from you. I can't wait to see this course mature over time. HGA does a great job of taking care of the course, please do your part as well! Sand divots and repair ball marks, players.
Must Play
I hadn't played on this course in over 20 years I was introduced to golf by my father on this course. The Green in fairways are in great shape. There are a few par-fives to where you can actually reach the greens in 2. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone that is looking for a challenge.
This course has a great layout
I highly recommend playing at Gus Wortham Park G.C. The staff is friendly, the course is in great shape and it’s a fair and challenging layout.
City Course.
Golf course is in excellent shape, brand new course, more sand traps make it tougher.
Pleasantly surprised
What a great track just tucked away between the city streets. The course was lush and manicured nicely. Nice practice range and putting green. Biggest thing I can say is make sure you play to every pin due to the vastness of the greens. You could easily 3 putt if you’re on the wrong side. Speaking of greens, they rolled fantastic! Quick and true and hold nicely when playing approach shots. Rough isn’t too bad and the fairways were great. If I had to find any negatives it would have to be the driveway into the parking lot but then I’d be nitpicking. If I lived closer I’d be here everyday!
Great Course
It's not a long course in terms of the distance. But it's challenging. Some of the par 4's are very long. The greens are very fast for normal players and are very undulating.
Overall a terrific course and must play. The course was in great shape.
Pretty good
Neat course, byob right now, staff somewhat rude but greens running great.
Great course
Probably one of the hidden gems in Houston green are amazing course is in perfect shape. Pace of play is 4 hours or less most days . Only play 6400 yard from the tips but will challenge even a great golfer
Fun course, great condition
Four of us made the trip to Gus Wortham for the first time yesterday. We came away impressed by the beauty of the course as well as the condition of the fairways and greens. It’s a fairly short course at 6400 yards from the back tees, but there are several holes which require long approaches into the green. This course is as good if not better than many of the “ high end” daily fee courses such as Blackhorse and Cypresswood. The facilities are minimal and no beverage cart on the course, so consider taking something to drink out there with you. Our foursome played in 3.5 hours and the course was pretty much empty. It’s kind of off the beaten track, but definitely worth the drive. We are planning a return trip out there within the next couple of months.
Excellent course
Excellent course , greens are in fantastic shape ,The same can be said about the rest of the course. Very reasonably priced for the quality of the facilities , pace of play is a little slow simply because the course is so popular and a lot of people walk it but that is to be expected with a course like this one. Will definitely be back
The good bad and ugly
Price is good. Layout and grass is very good.
But get off the mown area and there is trash and cut branches piled everywhere, entry road will bust your wheels with potholes, no food no beer.
It's like a genius built the actual course then left the rest of it to idiots.
