Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

greens need help
lots of areas that the greens are dark, usually they are great
Gus Wortham
The staff is always so polite and respectful they are there right when you need anything. Course layout was really nice, the weather was really really bad but the course irrigation handled it really well. Looking forward to the future clubhouse and what this course will become
Nice break from virus
Course in good intermediate condition. Bunkers are deep but no one takes their mess. The greens are bumpy with ball marks. Guess there the same as 70% of the public courses. Your putt has to go in with speed to stay on line so expect a 3-4’ putt back if you miss. Driveway is the worst part of the course.
First timer
Enjoyable course. Could have used course layouts. Wrong club and you pay the price. Overall very well kept course in great shape. Can’t wait to play it again.
Good value
Very nice greens. Not a bad routing considering the site limitations. The entry road is almost impassable. They need a real pro shop badly. I dropped a Garmin rangefinder on #11 and it was not turned it. It’s a dicey neighborhood. Otherwise the remodel was well done, especially compared to the Memorial boondoggle.
Fun to play
This is a very fun course. Layout is still the same but the renovations are 100 x better. Beware of the bunkers. The bunkers are no longer the flat shallow easy to get out of that they used to be. There is at least 4 new bunkers per hole with complete elevation change on 70% of the holes. The range is not the flat mud patch it use to be. The clubhouse & training center have not be built yet and the driveway and parking lot is still horrible but the course is in great shape. Greens are a little bumpy but very nice putting surface. Overall the redesign in my opinion is PGA worthy. It is now a competition course. A must play course.
Unprofessional staff (starter)
The starter who dealt with us was so rude and yelled at me when I asked if we can play a five some. And he even questioned us about the money we paid. He even harassing us on the course. Was very dissatisfied about the professionalism of that starter.
Not coming back!!!
What’s going on!
We returned to play Gus and we were very disappointed in the conditions of the greens. So so many ball marks which players are not taking the time to repair. It’s unfortunate too because the HGA did a bang up job on the course. If they don’t get a handle on this, it’s quickly going to get back to a “hackers” course again. Ask the marshals to help police instead of just riding around! Greens are in need of a heavy top dress of sand to cover all the ball marks. Good luck trying to sink a birdie putt of 4-5 feet!!! Creek(s) need a serious clean up too. Nasty full of plastic bottles and trash. Lastly, DON’T allow walkers on weekends. Slows pace of play.
Great course!
First time back since the remodel was done! Awesome job of remodeling! Will certainly come back again! Staff friendly!
Excellent Golf conditions
Really enjoyed playing this course, had a few challenging holes, greens were excellent and fast. staff were very professional and courteous,
Gus Wortham
This was my first time playing Gus Wortham. Had heard from many people that the re-do from a few years ago was a significant upgrade from the old layout. I was very pleasantly surprised, considering I had heard that it was a complete dog track before. Found it very playable, not too long or too difficult, but for a public muni in the middle of the city, it was a very good test of golf. Course conditions were pretty good as well. Greens were in good shape, which means the most to me. Overall, it was a positive experience and one I would enjoy again.
3 out of 5 Stars
Pace of play was horrendous. Staff was friendly but, disorganized. Enjoyed the layout of the course however, it would have been nice if they left some trees up because it felt overly exposed to surroundings. Greens were ok, please fix your ball marks.
Nice greens
Greens were perfect and course is laid out well, about the first 4 holes border some busy street on the right so if your a monster slicer make dang sure you stay left. Our foursome started at 12:40 and we were done by 16:30 before it started getting dark. Course facilities are still being upgraded but course is good to go.
Good course
We enjoyed this course. Well maintained and a joy to play. Greens were good. Would recommend it.
What a gem
Best public course layout in Houston. Course is in tip top shape all the time except during maintenance season. Fee is reasonable.
