About

Holes 18
Type Public/Municipal
Par 71
Length 6388 yards
Slope 126
Rating 71.2

Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.

The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.

Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

Marshals needed...

We got a decent deal on Golf Now and the course was in great shape. Outstanding job HGA. Three holes were cart path, but the LACK of a Marshal was a major issue. A twosome had the entire course backed up, it made for a very long round.

Not ready for prime time

The course is better than it was, it looks great! but the people managing it (HGA) ran out of money and so it is just half finished. The fairways don't let water soak in so there's lots of causal water and cart path only after even a slight rain. There is no fence preventing a slice from running out into the street on the first four holes. There is no café or place to meet up after the round, no food or beer - it's like going to a gym with no showers (not fun). It's a good walking course but there are no pull carts. Good driving range but no lights. Bathrooms are port-a-potties. Check-in is done by dial-up (sloooow). Putting green is 50 yards from the first tee, the pro shop is a trailer and Bayous are full of trash.

It is nothing that more money can't fix, I hope it doesn't take till next year or longer or they start raising the fees.

Gus Worthy

This course has just been redone and it is super nice. There is no club house at the moment so I could not rate that. Also did not check in so I couldn’t judge the staff. Course is in great condition even after all the rain we have had... good drainage. My only complaint is that holes 2&3 are along a busy road and very noisy. Rest of course really nice with some cool holes and a lot elevation changes for a Houston course. Highly recommend!!

Good Muni Option

With Memorial closed for 1-2 years, the timing for Gus Wortham to re-open could not be better. GW means there's still a few options for Houston golfers to play a public track without gouging the pocket.

Granted I never played GW before the renovations, I was certainly impressed with the course conditions. Even though the greens ran fairly slow, there were plenty of undulations and pin placement was very challenging. Fairways were in decent condition as well for playing in the heart of winter.

By far my biggest complaint was the layout. Right off the bat, players are faced with four holes that run parallel to busy roads down the right side of the course. I'm surprised someone from our two groups didn't hit any cars! Holes 2-4 are also all par 5s? On top of this, the course only runs ~6,300 yards from the tips. This all comes back to a funky course design.

All of that being said, the course remained challenging and offered lots of elevation changes, which is rare for Houston.

I'll definitely play again, and hopefully will raise my review to 5 stars once the construction is finished and the clubhouse is renovated.

Great course not that long but challenging lots of roll and pitch to both fairways and greens ! No Marshall’s so play is extremely slow plan on 4 plus hours even mid weeks today was 3 hours for the front 9 alone not my first 6 hour mid week round at this course

Not Ready

With the exception of the greens the grass was thin. Really needs another growing season. Greens were pretty good but hard (never saw a ball mark). The lady behind the counter was very nice, but the starter not so much ( I think he was the pro). Was a good value because I used one of my Golfnow rewards, otherwise the value would have only been fair. I do like the new mounding and bunkers. The trash in the bayou is very unsightly.

Gus Wortham Park restored for the modern era

It took twice as long as planned thanks to Hurricane Harvey, but the new Gus Wortham was worth the wait. Baxter Spann did an awesome job restoring the course. The bunkering, new greens, new shaping of fairways -- everything about the course (clubhouse to come later) is top notch. And best of all, it's here to stay. It's also one of the few courses in Houston you can comfortably walk with greens and tee boxes nearby. There really isn't a bad hole on the course, either. And the landscape is unlike anything you'll find in the Houston area, with plenty of up-and-down holes, great views and a great variety of shots. Best of all, it's very affordable, on par with Houston's flagship municipal, Memorial Park. Only negative was the condition of the tee boxes. It seems an army worm invasion, which affected many courses in the area, thinned them out, but the new Tif-Eagle greens (and fairways for the most part) were top notch.

Fun place to play

We always enjoy playing here. They said they plan to be closed now for about 9 months for upgrades and repairs. The cart paths I thought was the worse part of the course with all the pot holes. Several nice challenges on your drives to carry the bayou or lay up but the bunkers did need work. The sand was more mud and dirt.

Old style classic

Course needs work on the greens, and the cart paths are in serious disrepair due to previous flooding. Great layout for beginning to average player.

It's my home course

I grew playing this course as lived 2 minutes from here as a kid. It's a challenging course that has 3 par 5's in a row. For a course in the middle of the East End of Houston it has some elevation and there usually is some type of water hazard in play. It is now in private hands from the city and renovations will begin soon to the clubhouse, snack bar and some to the course.

Good value, needs improvement

The layout has a lot of variety and the location is convenient. Never had an issue with getting a tee time or pace of play, likely due to the conditions. The tee boxes are in fairly good shape, the fairways are spotty but not awful and the greens have been awful every time I've been. There's plans for a major overhaul in the near future which should bring the much improvement this place needs. If you want to work on your game and don't mind putting on brown sandy greens, it's a good place to go.

the layout was challenging, and I plan on coming back again to play. If I had known how inexpensive this course was, then I would have been coming here many time during the summer. No worries though, I'll be back.
