Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

Excellent conditions
I have played this course for years and eventhough weather conditions are not the best due to heat condition, the fairways, tee box and greens are excellent. This new management has worked hard to make it look great. Carts are in good shape. Concession is a bit pricey.
Overall rating, Excellent.
Old Gus is coming back around.
There is still work to be done but this is the best the course has looked in my lifetime. One green is almost lost and there were weeds on a few more but you can see the work that has been done to revive this old classic. Keep it up fellas and me and mine will be back!
Great condition.
This old course is in the best condition I have ever seen. Fairways and greens are really nice.
The staff was very congenital. For a Sunday it was very nice busy but nice.
The reason my son and I went there was the price on GolfNow. When we got there it turned out to be a little gem. If we can get that savings most every time when we decide to play we will be back a lot. Carts were clean but the brakes were worn a bit. Had to push down hard. Pro shop was clean and personnel very helpful. restrooms were clean and cool. 19th hole resturant was clean but a little pricy. Cart girl made the rounds regularly. Bunkers were in good shape however there was not a way to fix a divot. All things said, it was a good time. Thanks.
5 Dollar Beer
Another great golfing experience, however several of the Greens where bumpy. It was hot enough for a cold beer but to pay $5.00 for a single 16oz. beer is outrageous..
Great value
Great value for the price.
Easy access
This is a great golfing experience for the money.
Cool courses
Nice course with fast tricky greens
Love this track
Always a fun time at Gus. The greens were great as they always have been the times I've played there. There were a couple of holes that had some damage near the green and on the fairway but nothing that took away from the overall experience.
Great old course
It's a fun course to play and I am happy to see that a course remodel is going to take place. Can't wait to play it when the remodel is complete.
It.s a fun course
I enjoyed playing here but my biggest concern was the lack of visible yard markers ie 200, 150 or 100 yards. I've gotten use to the blue. white and red sticks or at least the a tree... The greens rolled nicely, fairway was in good condition and tee boxes was good. I was told they are under new management so I am looking forward to what they might do.
Course was good
Checking was easy lots of shade Tres to park. Tee box was open and course was in good shape just after receiving 8" of rain. Knowing the course would help on a few holes but all in all it was good.
This course needs lots of work
The fairways left much to be desired but the Green's were fairly decent
Good GC & nice service
I play this GC every month. It's formal and large GC. You could see good views in the #7 and 8 holes. It's located in the old Houston so there is less players, and you would see less waiting time. It's take me 1 hr to get there but I feel worth it. The shop workers were very nice, sometime I was earlier or late 30 min or more they let me in.
There is no push sell for drink and food. I felt to be treated #1.
Good Round of golf
I joined a friend for a round at Gus . I made my tee time reservation through golfnow. But was not able to add my friend
after about two hours. It was a windy day but we had a good time playing neither of us was hitting the ball very well
but the course was in good shape and and we finished in 2hrs and 45 mins. I will definetly return to play at Gus again.
Great Value
Played this afternoon 12/24/15 for the first time in a while, and the course played quite well. Lots of improvements, brush cleared, fairways were in good condition, and the greens rolled pretty decent. Hole 7 was altered from a par 4 to a par 3 temporarily due to construction, but all in all great course for the cost. The natural changes in elevation and the bayou that comes into play on holes 2, 7, 11, and 18 add to the course highlights and tempt you to go for the long ball when you should probably lay up.. Always fun playing "Ole' Gus" as we affectionately call it.
Good value for money.
Played Sat. 11/21/15 right after front moved through.
Cart path only. Windy, but course drained well.
Only negative comment, the 11:00 am tournament had a couple of really slow groups, and slowed pace.
Marshall should have sped them up.
Poor greens
Course is a fun layout with some decent elevation changes. A couple of the greens were unputtable, the rest were fuzzy and had small weeds popping up. Putts were bouncing almost immediately.
Rest of the course had patches of grass less hardpan. The hardest hole on the course had the fairway under construction and was set up as just a 120 yd par 3.
It's a shame that they haven't done more to maintain this course. City of Houston supposedly has been looking to do a major overhaul on the course, but understandably, other city services probably need more urgent attention.
golf course
I think this is a great course to play they are trying to fix it up looks nice, been playing it for awhile seen a lot or improvements
Great course layout in town!!
The course was in very good condition, the greens and fairways were really nice. I've been playing this course for many years and it continues to get better!!
