Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

worth the $
I enjoy playing this course as it is a good challenge for my skill level
Time to play
I had a great time laying the weather was very nice the green are very will taken care of, can't wait to play there again.
Pace of play killer.
Love the course, however there were a couple of 'fivesomes' that really adversely impacted the pace of play; since there was no marshal monitoring the pace. This will certainly be considered the next time I think of playing Gus Wortham.
Best course in Houston for <$30
The best course in its price range in the Houston area. Course is much better kept than it's competition. Full par 72 with a good mix of holes. Enough hazards to keep it interesting. Great friendly staff. Only complaint is there is a par 5 and 4 on the front 9 where you tee off with the busy traffic about 40 feet to your right along the entire fairway with only a 5 foot tall fence in between... better keep that slice in check.
Good
Course was better by Han expected and the pace of play was not bad.
Course hates single golfers
I've had a few bad experiences with starters at this course. Today was the final time I will play Gus Wortham.
Course was empty. I booked a tee time online for 9:00 am. I arrived 5-10 minutes head of my tee time and the course was empty except for a 4some that walked up with no tee time. Instead of honoring my tee time, the started grouped us together into a 5 some. The reason being is that the management doesn't allow singles on the weekend. Of course we tee off and are forced to let a few 2 sones play through us during our 5 hour round.
I have two issues with this. First, I should not be allowed to book a tee time as a single if your policy is no singles. Second, I have no issue playing with people, if there are people to play with. If its an empty course, I should be able to play as a single and the foursome of buddies should be able to play together. It makes no sense to force 5 people to play a 5 hour round when a single can play ahead and the foursome can tee off behind them. Everyone finishes in less time and enjoys the round more.
Less people are playing golf nowadays, and this course is doing its best to ruin golf for more people. The course is not maintained at all, and is in terrible condition year round. I hope management reads this and alters their policy toward their treatment of singles. I played here on average about once per month and will now cease to do so.
Inner City Course
This course was a great value for a round on a Sunday afternoon. The course was very lush and had many trees and water hazards. The condition of some of the fairways and greens was not ideal, but for the price I cannot complain.
First time
First time playing this course. It seemed well cared for. The only negative was the golf cart path's.They need some work.
This course has a great layout
I will play it again real soon.
The par three I like a lot
Save this Golf Course!! Oldest 18 holes in Texas
As one who watched the Legend of Bagger Vance just last week, I was swept away by the nostalgia of playing where Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen used to play. Seriously, there are pic of them in the pro shop. This is the first and oldest 18 hole golf course in Texas.
The setting is beautiful. Used to be a grand old country club, but is now part of a municipal system. Houston is considering closing it and making it a botanical garden - like we need another of those. The club house is a little run down, but has new carts. Worth the bargain price of entry.
It was hot when I played 18 the other day, but the pace was brisk, and I was swept away by the rolling hills and granddaddy oaks. Not too challenging, with few water hazards, there are some areas under repair. Only one green was what I'd call bad, most were fine. Some were tucked away behind traps.
Staying on the fairway was not hard, but there were some odd distances that keep you on your toes. The 5 back-to-back par 5s on the front nine were a surprise. All-in-all, an enjoyable round of golf. Don't go if you want luxury. But PLEASE go for the history, and to keep this course open.
Distance Markers
Please put the 150 yd. sticks or markers.
They would be very helpful when approaching.
Thanks.
Greens need work
Fairways are decent but the greens need more work....has patchy dirt and the holes are not clean and sharp around the edges.
Time for relaxation
Nice course for a municipal course. Lots of challenges down some of the holes. Watch out for the water.
The Visit
Visited the place and had a good time. It was a bit too full for my taste, but playing was great
Gus
Course was a surprise, certainly would play it again. Great value
I love this course
It's my favorite Houston muni. The course was in great shape. The greens were a bit slow but were green except for one that was "in transition".
Let's get some traffic there so it stays a golf course.
Fun course.
This is a fun course to play. I played with other golfer that were a lot better then I, but we had a good time. I scored one of the best games yet.
I'm glad you're a GW supporter. I don't want to see it turned into a botanical garden.
Nice course
Pace of play is fast..greens are in good shape....
This course relieved all my stress
The staff, workers, and other players were delightful. I had a lot of stress on my mind, some was golf related. I had one of the most refreshing rounds of my life. I played happier and went home happy.
What grass
The course is undergoing a major renovation so things are not in great shape right now. Lots of areas that are void of grass in fairways. the course layout was good, staff friendly, and we were golfing. I will try the course again in the future to see how the renovation is coming along.
