Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

In Great Shape
I don't think I've ever seen the course looking so good. It's not Redstone, but the rain has it green and looking good. Even with a slower back 9, we still finished in less than 3.5 hours. Nice people everywhere and a fun course with nice scenery on some holes.
$10 course
Nice lay out, but would not pay more than $10 to play there... There is no kitchen or bar.. Greens where decent except for one where you can not tell the difference from the fairway and the green.. Fairway had some patches of dirt...
Gus Wortham Shines
We have had lots of rain around here recently so I was quite surprised at the condition of the course. While the fairways were fairly soft, the greens were in decent condition. They rolled fairly true and were quite uniform. They did have two holes that were cart path only (7 and 18) but that is because those two holes' fairways are in low spots. This is one of my favorite courses in Houston but I wish they could invite someone to bring a cooker and offer food at the course. They likely won't ever have a snack bar probably because off the course location.
Great golf course for the price
I played for the first time and I was presently surprised. I had heard about this golf course for some time now, and finally got to come play. The course was in fairly good condition, though it had rained pretty hard 2 days prior. The tee boxes had longer grass, and the fairways were in decent conditions. The best part of the course was the greens and the fringe. They had good grass, were mowed well. I made a few good putts on them. Only thing I would say is bring some cash if you want food or drink. Other than that, for the price I would defiantly go again.
Markedly Improved
This course is going to be in the best shape I've ever seen it in the past 13 years. Sincerely hope the city of Houston does not turn it into a botanical garden. Brand new golf carts too
Fun course
Good fun course in good condition. Tests your length on several par 5 holdes.
Friday fun
My coworkers and I had a scheduled tee time for 3 on a Friday after work. It turned out to be 5 of us . The staff was more than accommodating they even gave the extra people the discounted rate.there was not a lot of players on the course so we were able to play almost all the holes before dark . We had such a good time were making it a weekly event .GO GUS WORTHAM
Not much changes
Been playing this course off and on for 30 years - not much changes. Tee boxes are horrible, more fairway bald spots than there should be (and this is spring!), and the greens are adequate. Actually, the greens were pretty good and fast for a change. Surprisingly the traps were above the norm (for THIS course). Maintenance budgets, as always, are the culprit for why this course isn't in better condition. Typical for a City of Houston run muni.
First time playing...
The course for the price was good. The course was quite muddy and soft in certain areas. The greens weren't bad although I prefer faster greens. For a muni it was overall a decent place to play especially for the price.
Good value for the money
The staff is extremely friendly. The fairways are not in good condition; grass is sparse and ground is hard. Greens are in good shape. The value for the money is very good.
Great course if you're starting out
This course was great. It was the first time my friend played and he really enjoyed it. The staff was friendly, with an exception of the grandma marshall. It's located in the city and despite a few holes being directly adjacent to a major road and a cemetery, the course wasn't all that bad. Elevation changes, long fairways make this course challenging, and sometimes you can't see the pin after your first drive. I would definitely come back here!
Great course for the money
The fairways could use a little work, but here had just been a heavy rain so the ground was soft. The greens are in great shape. This js a perfect course for a cheap, casual round.
Great layout
Not a bad course, needs a little work. Enjoyable round.
Good for players...
Don't play here expecting any alcohol or cart girl service. It's a fun, city-owned course that's geared for golf and little else. The worst thing about the course is the risk of slicing a shot into busy traffic on the 3rd & 4th. The best thing about the course is a low price and location in the city. If I would change one thing today, it would be to open the entrance by the driving range--tricky to find the other one!
prefered course to play
i've been playing this course for years. very challenging and most of all it has tons of elevation change desite being in the heart of the city. not the longest course in town but great place to play.
Golf outing
Course did not have cart available even though we paid for one. Waited 30 minutes and still no cart. Had to walk front nine then got cart at turn.
this course has caricature
enjoy the elevation challenges & the par 3's play longer then they look
This course has great features
Usually the pace of play is nice without groups pushing each other. However, this day there were two groups ahead of mine who seemed to have no idea about pace of play because we were constantly waiting to tee off. On many holes there were 2-3 groups bunched up and waiting to tee off. This was more of an exception from previous rounds out here. For a city course in January, the course was in pretty good shape.
Grass not up to par. Very low maintenance.
The course was not maintained property. It definitely feels like low quality public course. It's really not worth the money paid even for public course.
Interesting Course
Interesting course, open fairways, elevation changes, needs little more maintenance and care but is a good place to go
