Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

Unique topography for Houston golf
Gus Wortham provides golfer with a mini hill country
experience, a lot of holes on the back nine actually
have some elevation change, whether uphill or downhill. This is a nice change of pace, if used to flat courses in the city. The fairways were in rough shape, greens rolled true & in good shape. I've played here probably 30 times, if looking for a different experience of Houston golf, try the original Houston Country Club...Gus Wortham.
Mature course
course was a nice mature golf club open since 1920s I think.
Can this really be Houston?
It is hard to imagine that some of the holes on this golf course are in Houston. Great tee-green elevation changes!!, wonderful old trees, water and views make this course a really good value. The greens are older-style grass, but roll true. A fine relic donated to the public trust --it's the old Houston Country Club course. Have fun.
course in fair condition, greens not so good, needs attention.
Good old golf course to go hack around on. not too expensive so makes the day fun. some great holes. odd lay out (3 par 5's in a row).
The oldest course in Houston
Always enjoy and is always maintained. The cafe is closed at this location.
Excellent Course
Booked a hot deal for 10 bucks. Course honored it with no problems. The course presently is in good shape. This is a decentchallanging course. One hole has been cut short due to a rebuilding of a bridge. Friendly staff with huge greens. I have always liked playing this course. Very open lately but I do play during the week. :-P
Great Value with some variety of shots
I played this course with a buddy during a weekday at 1 pm. The course was pretty empty which is great since we are both beginners. There is a decent variety of shots and some challenging par 4s. Par 5s are pretty straight forward; long, open and straight. Par 3s are fun with one going over a pond. One par 3 is just a little over 200 yards too. Many holes have thick woods on at least one side and reward you for your shot in the fairway. There is some decent elevation change and hole 18 has a big downhill drove for a par 4 over a creek that finishes uphill to the green. The cart paths are asphalt which isn't bad considering the low price for greens fees. Some parts of the course could use a little attention but overall a fun courseand great for the price so close to downtown.
It had been a couple of years since playing Gus Wortham. The course is in great shape.
I had an excellent round with a good friend. We had a great time with a challenging course for a couple of hackers.
This course has lost its Liquor license
It would've been nice for little heads up about the liquor license...
And the food situation... they have no cafeteria they only have vending machines withs snacks... So we just finished up nine holes and left...
Relaxing to Play
Staff is courteous, genuine, and friendly. There is a lot of new fluffy sand going into the sandtraps; pleasant surprisedfor a muni.
Gus Wortham is a little forgiving, but has a few challenges in the depth changes on about 4 holes. Fairways are green and firm. Greens are slow and slightly bumpy. Really no blind shots; #1 doglegs left. Good course to relax and play.
Not good golf...
The course needs a lot of attention! Poor greens, brown fairways, no change from short grass to rough.
Great lay out, will use a variety of clubs in your bag
Course needs some conditioning. Good course for the money
needs to improve on speed of play.
4th of July
There was one lady that worked there hiding in a blind spot on hole 16, a par 3 that jumped on my soon about not announcing his slice in her direction. Tee boxes too close to the greens on too many of their preceding holes. Outside of that we enjoyed our round and the rest of the people that worked and played there. Cart paths need attention. We will return.
If they took are of it , it would be fun
Elevated greens, and wide open, greens not good , three were ok.
23 on a holiday was good
Had a great time even in 107 degree temp!
Staff was very friendly! Was hoping to stop and get a hot dog after the front nine. Wish it served food.
One of the creeks was full of trash (mostly cans and bottles) :(((
other that the above mentions I loved it! I will play here again
Great municipal course close to downtown
This hidden gem just off 45 south is great value for money. Especially weekday twilights rates, and if you want a course not too crowded to work on your game or just play through fast, this will keep you happy. The course layout is varied with water coming into play on a handful of holes and not too much elevation for a beginner/middle skill level golfer. Some greens can be a little rough to play on, but nothing I haven't encountered on more expensive courses.
Bonus info: It's the oldest 18 hole golf course in Texas and it featured an exhibition match with Vardon/Ouimet back in the day.
Nice course
Only problem I had was when I booked online, it said $60 due upon checkin. When I got there my guest and I were charged $34 a piece which came out to $68. We were overcharged $4 a piece.
I left after 9 holes
i was playing solo...behind a 2 4somes and 1 5some and no one would let me play though...i went in to the pro shop to get some help...but i got no help from them so i went home...i don't think i will be going back there anytime soon.
