Gus Wortham Park Golf Course
About
Texas' oldest existing 18-hole track was originally built in 1908 to serve members of Houston Country Club. When the club found a new location in the 1950s, Gus Wortham bought the facility and opened it to the public with $60 annual dues. The city of Houston took over in 1973, and it's been one of the busiest courses in the state ever since.
The unique design features a trio of par 5s on holes 2-4, a rarity in golf. One of the better birdie opportunities is the 293-yard No. 9. On the back, one of Texas' signature par 3s awaits in the 250-yard No. 16.
Getting there : From I-45, take the Wakeside Blvd. Exit and travel 1 mile north to Capitol St.

Not Appreciated
We played Gus last Friday, 1/7 and the greens were in excellent shape. Returned a week later to find them peppered with ball marks. It’s unbelievable that some players or hacks don’t take the time to fix a simple ball mark. The greens can’t handle this barrage for very long.
The HGA has done well to bring back Gus only to have it “assaulted”. Tell the players when they check in to please fix their ball marks. Have the marshals ask some players too. If the players get upset, good then maybe they won’t come back!
Those of us who used to play Gus “back when” have and do appreciate the hard work the HGA has done.
First time playing city course now run by Houston Golf Association. Starter kept the tee off pace going. Was paired with two other players with experience on the course. This was helpful. Course is located in the city so there is more noise in the area. Was impressed with course.
Always booked nearly full
Never expect a quick round but you can count on almost perfect greens and minimal bare spots.
Fast greens
Got paired with a random. Great game of golf and very long par 5s
Slow play
Really frustrating when the group in front is completely behind. When you have a hole wide open in front of them and 3 groups on a hole you have slow play.
Usually, there are marshalls, not yesterday. Love the course but that was unacceptable.
Pace of course
They really need a course Marshall to keep up pace even though it’s a public course and more parking availability.
Great day for golf
If you get a chance to play here make the time to do it. Greens were super fast and hole placement was very challenging.
Yet another outpost of the Munaissance
The more vibrant, beloved local golf courses I get to see, the more I want to see. Places like this are the heart and hearth of golf in America.
The course serves up everything you want in a muni: an affordable, splendidly conditioned, compact, loud, occasionally idiosyncratic and extremely walkable course in a bustling area (not to mention world-class tacos at Monchy's less than five minutes away).
The course is not overly long at 6,400 yards from the tips, but with a set of adventurous, relatively small greens, it will bite you repeatedly if you're careless or overly aggressive. The par 5s are gettable, and there are some short par 4s where joy and pain get doled out roughly equally. The intimidating, slightly awkward uphill par 4 18th requires your best swing of the day if you want to make the long carry over a creek in order to get to safety and a wedge approach. Whether you succeed or fail, you'll probably want to go back to the first tee again. Good thing: at $40 to walk, you can probably afford to.
