Nice venue
Beautiful course layout some greens need work but excellent value
Bad greens,
Greens were terrible, pace of play horrendous and was verbally abused by some guy about 3 groups back, telling us to hurry up when he couldn’t see we were queuing behind others, 2nd time there and most likely the last
Vast improvements to the golf course. Course in good nick across majority of holes. Delight to play.
Lot of hard work going into improving the course, fairways are much better and bunkers now have sand in them, greens better but still a bit to go , but much better than earlier in the year, well done to all the staff.
Massive improvement
You could always tell there was a good course there. with all the improvements these guys have made it’s getting there a lot quicker then expected. The improvements made r excellent nd will defo be back. Fair play to all involved 👍🏾
Cracking Course
Staff and members were friendly. Nice clubhouse and decent breakfast.
Some greens a bit patchy, but they've only just been taken over and work is obviously in progress.
A bit slow getting round, but there was a comp and a society out, so it was kind of expected.
Will definitely be back to play another round
Massive improvement.
Played a late tee time at 6.30 for £14 (an absolute bargain.) pace of play was excellent with 2 groups letting me play though. I managed to get a full round played in 2 hours and 30 minutes.
The staff member on the counter was nice and friendly and the shop looks more professional since Link Golf’s takeover. I was a bit miffed when the marshal caught up with me on the second, par 3 tee box and suggested I could play from the yellows? A bit cheeky I thought as my tee shot was sat pin high on the green from 205 yards 🤣 I think maybe he had seen the rogue ball on the yellow tee in front and assumed that I had duffed my tee shot?
I was pleased to see that he was doing a lap of the course before closing the shop to ensure that everyone had paid on. There’s nothing worse than booking on a course and then getting caught behind locals who have just snuck on.
Course layout.
For people who don’t know, this course is a mature parkland course and was designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie (Course designer of Augusta National.) It is a really fun layout and often picturesque (especially the front 9).
The course has fantastic variation with plenty of doglegs left and right. 2 tiered (macKenzie) greens, sloped greens, elevation changes, long and short par 3’s, cambered fairways (the 9th), challenging tight holes but also plenty of score-able shorter holes with wider fairways…. It’s a real golfers paradise.
Course conditions.
Good-
I was lucky to play on a week where the weather had been kind.
All the tee boxes, fairways and greens were well cut and tidy, rough was in check. Distance markers were all in place, hazard stakes were appropriately placed etc. Bunkers were maintained with plenty of sand and also had rakes beside them for the first time in years!. It was a real pleasure to see the time and effort the new team has put into the the course!
Bad-
The third and sixth holes do have ongoing problems with broken drains which the team has been trying to fix but they are a problem when the weather has been bad. Hopefully they can get this sorted for the wetter months of the year.
The greens are very playable and improving which each visit, but for £14 a round you shouldn’t expect Augusta National standards! especially taking into account that 6 months ago this place was a real mess and in danger of losing half the holes to a development company.
Clubhouse.
I didn’t visit on this occasion but I have had family party’s here in the past and the food is great and staff very welcoming. The place is always bustling when you get off the 18th green so they must be doing something right!
Hats off to Link Golf’s team for taking it on. You can really see the conditions improving each time you visit. I can wait for my next round!
Thanks,
Paul.
It’s ok
Played today tea time still needs plenty of work doing this year will be a year where it seems slow to get things done greens need attention still and fairways wants cut grass clearing but it’s getting there it could take a couple of seasons before you see the real benefit of the work these guys are doing unfortunately it does take time and the greens will get better year on year it’s still very playable just hit it straight if you can’t control the face of the driver don’t use it as you won’t find your ball if it goes to side of fairway but give them a chance to sort out I’m sure they know all this and there on at some point
Staff in the shop were really welcoming, you can see improvements made to the course. I’m not slagging it off as the weather has been rubbish but you can see it’s still early stages of the work. It was such a shame that local idiots used the 3rd green to ride electric bikes on! The layout of the course is brilliant I will go back . Hope not get stuck behind the 3 ball I had for 10 holes that took an ages to leave the greens. The greens team are doing a brilliant job and look forward to what else they do in the future.
Across the road
I was advised about the course on the other side of the road. Green staff cut the grass and leave it on the course hence you lose your balls and that part has not been cut enough. Shame because this course is great value and should be busier.
Management where very helpful.
Not in great shape
I play regularly but this was the first of 2024. Only 11 holes were open but not informed when booking and no discount provided. Course was not in a good condition at all. Fairways were long, greens were bad. You could see lots of work going on but not value for money in its current state.
Course in poor condition fairways at best semi rough
Loose grass everywhere greens bone hard with little grass needs lots of work don't waste your money
Never seen it this bad, even in winter
I booked this course as it’s always good value for what I consider a great course. Upon arriving though the fairways had only been partially cut and as such I was losing golf balls even on the fairway the course was in that bad condition. Several of the greens had great gouge strips that are obviously from lawn mowers. I’ve played this course so many times and I’ve never seen it in such a bad condition even in the depths of winter after heavy rain. Really really disappointed. I wasn’t the only one several players stopped me to ask how many balls I had lost on the fairways as well.
Farmers Field
Shame , fairways uncut, dead grass all over fairways since last time they were cut, worst condition off any golf course I’ve ever played, not a good start for the new owners, I will try again, but probably not this year as it I’ll take it a year to correct the course in its present condition, in the meantime prices should be lowered, not raised as they have been, and a bit of a warning on the course conditions would be fair also, sorry but that’s the truth new owners.
You’ll struggle to find your ball on the fairway!
Pretty shocking conditions out there today to be honest. Been playing this course for years and probably in its worst condition to date. Groundsmen cut the grass and don’t collect any of it so every ball was lost under mountains of grass. The thin rough is just as bad as the thick rough, so again many lost balls even when you know it’s 100% in play. Worse thing about it today was that the groundsmen don’t actually care you’re playing. Driving in front of you when about to hit shots, driving over our balls multiple times, no respect for the players at all. Just a pretty shocking course and won’t be returning this season unfortunately.
Couldn't play, (grass)
Covered in grass cuttings all over, 4 ball lost a ball on every holw in the middlw of the fairway. Could only play 5 holes, walking off the course now
Worst round of in 20 years
After driving to this course today for over an hour , we were completely disappointed. Granted the weather hasn’t been too good in recent months I didn’t expect Augusta. They could of least cut the fairways to a reasonable standard . As competent golfers I never expected to lose 3 balls on a fairway , on most courses the fairways are at the same standard of other courses 2nd cut (3” deep) . Maybe you should ship in the green keeping staff off your sister clubs marland, townley park, and Heaton park . Although not perfect at least they seemed to make an effort. No signs to the next hole since it runs through a public park and awkward local 4 balls that will not let you play through (because they’re in their own competition) overall rubbish experience and unlikely to play again .
On a positive note , link golf transferred our initial green fee to marland in rochdale which was like playing like PGA Sawgrass in comparison, much appreciated Link golf for your efficiency on resolving what could have been a ruined day .
Played it today 4/5/24. And it was worst course we’ve played in 35 yrs there’s no good points to this course. When we came of course we were soaked and supposed the buggy got through. Beetween loosing balls on fairways it was so frustrating. We told guy in pro shop it was a slog of a big he just nodded. £77 we payed counting buggy absolute joke
Poor condition
Played 15 holes but had to walk off as conditions were too bad , would have walked off after 2nd hole if it wasn't for my playing partner. Could not tell fairway from rough as had not been mown for weeks . Terrible experience as in 30 years of playing golf I have never played one in this condition.
Poor condition
Course was in poor condition, the course had not been mown for weeks and the greens were in poor condition as well.
Awful
Terrible conditions unplayable course
Every shot plugging
Mud bath the course shouldn’t have been open we ended up playing with old practice balls the fairways were like 2nd cut. Shambles
