Matfen Hall Golf Club - Standing Stone Course
About
After four years in a temporary clubhouse, Matfen Hall Golf Club made its long awaited move into Matfen Hall itself at the beginning of March 1999. Built in 1830 amid beautiful Northumberland countryside, the imposing ancestral home of the Blackett Family has been converted into a luxury country house hotel with excellent facilities for golfers.
The Conservatory Bar is an impressive and hospitable '19th' hole with panoramic views over the course. Each of the thirty-one bedrooms has its own individual character and with superb dining to be had in the Library restaurant, Matfen Hall is the ideal venue for a golfing break.
Other golfing facilities include a driving range, short game practice area, and practice putting green. Plans to create a purpose built Golf Academy are well advanced.
A regular venue for professional and country amateur events, Matfen Hall's golf courses are rated as some of the finest in the North East. Sympathetically laid out on a landscape originally created by Capability Brown, parkland layout offers an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all abilities. The picturesque River Pont comes into play on several holes and the dry stone 'ha ha' which bisects the estate presents a unique obstacle. Many holes stand out but the short 10th and 17th are particularly attractive. Seven redesigned holes with new green came into play in the spring of 1999 and have improved the overall quality of the course even further.

Another bargain
Booked thus course at the last minute, simply stunning. The greens and fairways were immense. Great 27 hole layout. I'll definitely be back
Lovely course and lovely food
Played Douglas 9 holes and Standing Stone 9 holes. Course in lovely condition. Food in the Keepers Lodge was great.
Matfen Day
Played the course a few times and have never been disappointed with which ever 2 of the 3 9s we're playing - This time we played the Standing Stone & Dewlaw.
From booking in until we left after the round & some food , we were treated very well by both club shop pros and the catering team and made very welcome, special shout out to Nicola in the club shop who was very helpful indeed.
Spent 30 mins at the driving range, although you have to drive to it, was not an issue, guy in the range shop was friendly and can't argue at 50 balls for £3.50. also has a great short game area, and no doubt one day I'll play the par 3 course.
Now to tee off - Course was in great nick, the days rain before certainly helped with the greens being very receptive. Just a note on the greens, they played pretty true although they had been hollowed/micro tined at some point that week before we played, but did not spoil the putting expericence. Course layout has been well thought out, with some bunkers in the wrong/right place!! Sand was good, not to fluffy... Quite asthetic expeically looking back toward the Hall.
Overall experience was fantastic and look forward to playing it again...
Very poor condition
Thought we got a bargain at £15. However found the course to be in a very poor condition. I've played on municipal courses with better greens and tee-boxs. The lady at the club house was most unhelpful just giving the basic amount of info on how to get to the 1st tee. Would not be going again this year. Hopefully they get someone in to sort out the condition of the course as it has a decent layout.
Love playing here
Good course, needs a tiny little TLC. I always enjoy my time at Matfen. The only criticism of yesterday’s visit is around the greens needs some attention, otherwise no complaints.
Class
Great course make sure you play the Douglas and standing stone
Great for time of year
Another thoroughly enjoyable round. The course is kept open and on full greens as much as possible in the winter and it is this philosophy that keeps our society coming back.
Staff are particularly friendly and the bar/ dining area is great for a relaxing pint afterwards.
Nice course interesting layout and in good condition
Really enjoyed a round at Matfen. The staff in the pro shop were excellent and even rearranged the tee of times when one of our guys got stuck in traffic. Matfen is a good course and with its 27holes it makes it an interesting place to play. The food in the club house is excellent so overall top marks and we will be back
Course great but tees tatty
Played in a four-ball with buggies for a friends birthday. Clubhouse great and bacon sarnies fantastic!!
The course is in good condition and, with all the recent rain, the first and second cuts are a bit juicy - take an extra club!! The greens were true enough but a good bit slower than I am used to.
The only gripe is that the tee boxes were in poor condition and could do with levelling off and tidying up
Matfen Magic
We enjoyed a fabulous afternoon playing a course that rewarded accuracy, but punished any wayward shots. The hazards are all in the right places, the greens were in excellent condition, and the rough was brutal if you were unfortunate enough to find yourself in there. We had a fabulous day and will undoubtedly be returning soon...
Pace not good
The staff put us right before groups of school golf who took forever to play. Took us 1.5h for the first 5 holes. The staff could have avoided it and place us on another departure, as there are 3 par 9 on that course.
