Not worth the drive
Played this course a year ago and had a great time. This time was not so fun. The course layout is fun enough, but the course was pretty beat up. Lots of mud spots and places in the rough with minimal grass. The real issue was the pace of play. We were only able to complete 15 holes in the 5 hours and 5 mins we played. I'm usually not a stickler for this, but it seemed to not be improve over the entire round. It would have taken us close to 6 hours to finish if we didn't run out of daylight.
Given the long drive to get their, the course condition and pace of play there is no way I could consider this course worth the cost. We may try it next year, but probably not because it takes forever to get there.
Amazing course
Definitely one of the top 3 courses in northern Virginia. With lush Bermuda fairways and stunning greens, it’s make this course stunning. Go play it.
Great Course, details remain elusive
This is our home course. Love it and the amenities....
The course was is in decent shape for the time of year. (we last played it in late June)
The rough was pretty much non-existent in most locations, lots of dirt and grass seed. The fairways are in average shape (for the time of year) and they appeared to be transitioning to dormant when we played (it was cart path only).
The greens were fair (aeration occurred recently it appeared because that was still visible but it didn't impact any rolls on our putts significantly. The visuals on the tee boxes are beautiful, especially this time of year with the changing leave color.
It's hard to judge a course by Fall/Autumn course conditions and generally I try not to however what I do judge is value for the money... we paid $70/person to play this course in less than ideal course conditions... While this price is less than it normally costs, the price should be further reduced to reflect the time of year, time of tee off (because it's not likely to get all 18 in) and course conditions. Any price more than $3/hole seems excessive given the time of year and course conditions.
When in season and the course conditions are premium (as they normally are) this course warrants the higher price tag, but not in the offseason unless the goal is to limit people playing and traffic on the course.
Beautiful Fairways
Tee boxes, fairways and greens were in great condition. Staff is great, great operation. Parking lot is too small for such a course.
Terrible carts and no parking spots
I live in the neighborhood and have played here many times. Reviews from this site criticize the need for better carts, so when my buddy and I arrived at 1:30pm we only had two carts to chose from, so we took the best looking one, #51. By the way, there were no parking spaces in the lot or in the auxiliary lot or along the entrance so we both parked on the street near the townhouses.
On the 7th hole our cart died! We tried to push it up the hill to 8 tee but abandoned it and walked. I placed a call to the pro shop, gave them our location, and continued our walk. By the way, this is not a course you want to walk especially if you own a cart bag like me! My buddy called the pro shop again on the 10th tee and was told that a cart was sent to the 17th tee and they could not find us! They did not try to find us again until we called the second time? We finally got a new cart on the 10th green and we’re given 2 vouchers for future rounds….
Poor service all the way. Club should know what time groups go out and which cart they are in. What if it were a life threating emergency?
Like the course but will go elsewhere because of lack of basic staff service.
Hidden gem in Virginia
Best course that I've experienced in Virginia so far. Great views. Challenging holes. And delighted to find out that it is Troon managed to be able to use my Troon card. Greens are kept in great condition rolling at a 9-10. Fairways were well kept. When it doubt, play safe off the tee as O.B. is legit on many of the holes.
One of the best course layouts in Virginia. However, condition of the course always seems lacking. Currently cart path only to help in the regrowth of the rough. Fairways and greens acceptable. One tee box had weeds so high at edge a well struck tee ball could still hit the tall plants???? Crews seemed to be working hard to improve conditions. Hope it works
Outrageously unnecessary cart path only mandate added 45 minutes and
Fairways could not have been firmer. Staff mentioned course was a little wet. After the first 9, asked the ranger if they’d consider changing it at some point and he barely acknowledged me before saying “cart path only sir” in an adamant voice. Understand the reasoning when the course is wet, but when your five iron has 20 yards of roll, it’s probably safe. Thanks for adding 45 minutes and a mile of extra walking to our round.
Nice Layout
Fairways and greens were in top shape. The bluegrass and fescue rough had been hit by disease caused by the heat and moisture of the summer. The course will be great once the rough gets sorted.
Great views, challenges. Was just overseeded.
We had given up on finding decent golf in Virginia, but was recommended by others to play this course. We were very pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of construction areas around the course with new development, but the course itself (a Troon managed course) was in great shape for September play. The fairways and tee boxes were held up. Great views. Lots of ravines. Challenging greens. Better than the "flat land" golf I had been experiencing in Virginia. Only gripe was that they just "scattered" mulch in the rough around the fairways and greens making it a little muddy and smelly at times.
Excellent Course
Highly recommend this course and my wife which is not a long driver of the ball had a great time. Course conditions were outstanding with a great staff. A long course for the walkers, the distance between Hole 1 and 2 was not a short cart ride.. One of the best courses I've played in Northern VA and we'll be back.
Tip - Don't go long on the back 9.
Great Course
Wonderful course that provides an interesting 18 holes. Pace is slow after 3:00 pm.
Great course, except...
This is a great course with one big issue.
The course is in very good shape. Most of the problems with the grass on the course are areas in the rough, so that's not a major concern. The course gets a little extra soggy after rain so drainage is a bit of an issue. Great tees, great fairways, and great greens. There are many blind first shots, which is fine with me. The practice area is fantastic. The clubhouse is gorgeous. The restaurant is amazing. The cost is premium and a bit high for the value.
The big negative is the carts. This is a very spread out course with many hills between holes. Unfortunately their electric carts cannot keep up with the demand. In each of my last 3 rounds there (over maybe a 6 month period) my cart has died during the round. You know what a pain that is. My playing partners' cart also died. The we passed another golfer sitting and waiting for the staff to bring his new cart. Unacceptable at that cost. I'm not going back for a while until the can get those carts repaired or replaced.
Beautiful Course
The condition of the course was immaculate, and and a joy to play. Having ice machines are a brilliant feature especially on a hot day like today.
Short and tight but well maintained
We played the silver tees and while it was a bit shorter than what I'm used to (played ~5,900 yards) I stilled enjoyed the round and some of the unique shots that Jack has you make. It was my first time playing here and this is one of those tracks that you definitely need to play a couple of times to start scoring well. I'm excited to play it again.
