Poor Course Conditions

The audacity of the club to charge $109 for a Friday afternoon for this kind of course condition, horrendous fairways, bunkers under repair, dead patch around the green, no beverage carts, no marshal to oversee pace of play, waiting at the tee box every hole, pictures speak for themselves. We quit after 16th hole.

A little rough around the edges…

I play here often, and it is one of the best public courses in NoVA. On several holes the fairways were in really bad shape for this course, but the greens were solid. I’m sure they will get things in order within the next several weeks…for $140+ bucks, they’ve got to do better.

Fun, challenging track

Potomac Shores was a fun course but it wasn’t at its best today. Cart path only, a few days after rain, turns a 4:15 round into a 4:45 round quickly. A lot of brown patches mixed with soggy areas suggests some design flaws. Not a single hole shows any of the Potomac River which seems like a missed opportunity and some creative if not misleading marketing.

The biggest bummer from today’s round was the on course water coolers filled with what tasted like pool water.

I’d return but hard to say that PS played like a course with a $95 green fee today. Only bright spot was the spicey chicken sandwich in the clubhouse after!

Fairways in rough shape

Rough conditions for the price. It's early in the season but still pricey.

Extremely poor customer service

Our recent experience at Potomac Shores Golf Club was extremely disappointing. As homeowners in the community, we went to use the driving range but were denied access because we did not have a tee time. When we asked where this rule was posted, the manager, RJ Gough, stated that because the club is a private business, they could turn away anyone at their discretion.

RJ was rude, dismissive, and made it clear he had no regard for the community or its residents. Despite being properly dressed and respectful, we were treated with hostility. His attitude toward homeowners is unacceptable and unprofessional.

It is troubling that after previous management issues — including serious misconduct — the current leadership still fails to meet basic standards of respect and customer service expected in a community setting.

Large Course

This was my 1st time playing Potomac Shores. I intended to play the silver tees. I’m a fairly long hitting 72 year old. All three of the other golfers were younger (65, late 50’s, and 35). They all were playing the gold tees. So I agreed to play “with” them. Only the 35 year old should have been playing the gold tees. He was a long hitting advanced player and had played the course many times. He provided insight/knowledge, particularly on the many dogleg blind 2nd shots. While I successfully drove the many waste areas between tees and fairways, the 2nd shots became challenging distance-wise. A lot of elevated greens (well bunkered) added to the need to hit long approach shots accurately. Many greens had waste areas in front also. The course was in good shape: greens almost recovered from aeration were quick, true and undulating. Bunkers were equally nice. Fairways still need to grow in some more. Rain and sun will definitely help. There was a beverage cart and bathrooms available on course. Once you leave the clubhouse, you won’t see it until you return your cart at the end of the round. Make sure to know the lock combination for the bathrooms! All in all a challenging and fun round of golf. In many instances you’ll drive the cart for what seems like a mile over hills and through the woods to get to the next hole, which makes for a relaxing and enjoyable time. Driving range (30 ball bags) is included. The next time I play Potomac Shores I’ll play the silver tees, which should help my ego!

Pricey for aerated greens

Last minute booking so not a lot of other options. Fairways were still dormant but were fine to hit off of. They had just aerated the greens not too long ago with the large core aerator so needless to say, putting was a series of random events. Still had to pay $96 (apparently that was a reduced rate) so not thrilled.

I still hate the routing of the course (they changed it a number of years ago) so you don’t go by the clubhouse until after 16. Perhaps with the price they charge they could build a real halfway house somewhere near 8-11.

Course by the Potomac

The charges in elevation on this course is refreshing and adds a pleasant golfing experience.

Long par 4s and 5s. Keep your woods handy.

Nestled between the Potomac and a neighborhood.

The course was well planned as to not put a Weber grill in your slice path.

All and all a great course with well manicured greens and fairways.

Continues to go downhill

This was the course we’d visit with friends on special occasions. Great staff, food and golf. We’ve seen it continue to fail in all levels the past few years and continue to visit, hoping they have brought on a new team to clean it up and be worthy of the Troon name. Or happening yet. To add this time, instead of having pre-round lunch as planned, we were told at the course that the restaurant was closed and they didn’t apologize or even offer simple snacks you could find on beverage cart - no food, no beverage cart and horrible hospitality. Love this course but don’t know if I’ll bother giving it another try at this point.

Great Course, One Bad Hole

Course was in amazing shape for the winter season. Cart path only can suck, but it was not too bad on this course. Layout wise, it is solid overall, and there are some great holes, with 1, 7, and 8 being my personal favorites. Only criticism is that hole 17 needs a complete rework, a poor hole where it feels like they where trying to fit it in, no hole should have to have a buddy go ahead to show you where to aim and let you know where it lands when you hit the fairway off the tee. If they eliminate the blind shots and flatten that hole out some it'd be fine, and they have enough dirt around it to do just that.
