Loved this course
Didn’t play well at all but this place is fantastic, I’ll be back as soon as my game improves!
PGA tour type course
Not the best for beginners but one of the nicest courses I’ve seen in person and on TV. Must play in the area but stock up on ice and drinks if it’s a hot day
Fun and challenging layout
First tee time of the day, so pace of play was no issue. Lots of blind and challenging shots especially off the tee. Usually hitting over a bunker. Course is in good shape and trees help protect it from any wind that’s in the area.
Classic Nicklaus
First time playing Potomac Shores. Great layout, with massive elevation changes second only to Devils Knob. The rough was penal, as it should be, with very challenging pin positions defending scoring. It would’ve been nice to have a hotdog at the turn, but no hot food available on a Monday.
Great course poor amenities
Love the course. Amenities are almost nonexistent. No on course beverages, no shack or cart. No gps in the cart. Range is fair. No chipping and average putting green. The grille is very good.
Great track but always cart path only
This course is in great shape and a fun layout. The main issues they have are the beverage cart is very sporadic/slow and it’s always cart path only. If there’s even a tenth of an inch of rain within a couple days of your tee time, “cart path only”. This course does not hold water, in fact every time I’ve played the fairways are good but the green are rock hard, so it shouldn’t always be cart path only.
Also the last 3 times I’ve gone out, I’ve first seen a beverage cart on Hole 15, Hole 1 (when we didn’t need anything and never saw them again) and hole 9.
Again, great track but expect cart path only if it’s rained even once in the last 3 months and load up on beverages and whatever at the clubhouse before you go out.
Pretty Course, Pretty Hard
Best conditioned course for the price, and it's not even close. Quality from tee to green. Bunkers, rough, you name it. Not a single complaint. Views were very pretty, but it being my first time I definitely didn't know some of the lines. Any approach level with the green is ideal, as there as pretty steep hills on almost every hole protecting the green. I would say green speed was the only thing that could be a little better, but they're almost fully back after being aerated so they should be rolling at at least a 10 in a week or two (probably a 7-8 today).
Big, beautiful and blind
A hilly course with dramatic elevation changes, sharp doglegs and several blind shots. With all the peaks and valleys it's easy to get great views, so there's lots of places for photo opps. Also, the course is well-maintained (which it should be for the price), and I would say conditions were excellent even though when I played the fairways and tee boxes still hadn't fully healed from aeration. The only thing impairing the beauty of the course is the rows and rows of townhouses that border many of the holes.
The terrain variation adds to what's difficult about the layout - lots of uneven lies and the possibility that your ball will be lost down a ravine if it takes a bad bounce. Also challenging are the small greens on several holes and the abundance of sand traps. But being in the bunkers reinforced to me the quality of the course; they were full of fluffy sand, no skimping. Small greens, generous bunkering and uneven lies make approach shots intimidating, especially from long distance; from the fairway it's hard to know the right place to miss, so course knowledge will definitely help lower your score.
All-in-all a real treat, but I think you need to be fresh and alert - it's a track that can beat you up and frustrate you, especially if you're tired, or if it's 95 degrees and humid.
4/5 Stars
Pro shop was limited in apparel. I normally like to get a poker chip or something from every course I play at and sadly they had nothing close to that.
There is a beautiful grass driving range, but for some reason we were on the mats. The mat quality was poor. Grass growing through, unkept, looked like they hadn’t replaced them since putting them in.
Other than that, the fairways were some of the purest I’ve ever played. The tee boxes were fantastic. The greens had been punched maybe 2-3 weeks before we played so they were still scared.
The layout and course design is just fantastic. Every hole makes you think and demands the use of all the clubs. Every hole is unique and the par 3s were challenging and scenic. The nice thing is the distance between the holes and the length of each hole kept the pace of play up. It could have been faster without the slow group in front of us but it took 4.5 hours.
Carts didn’t have gps or any frill. Pretty basic. Beverage cart was out the whole time and we were visited 3 times.
Would like to go back in the fall.
Good job!
Staff was friendly and very accommodating.
Being our first time, they pointed us in all the right directions and even gave me the proper discount with my junior golf. Had a blast!!
Course was in good shape considering how hot and dry it’s been.
Problems with the restaurant.
The course is top notch. However, if your planning to have post round of some drink and eats, call ahead to the Resturant. I have experienced more than once, that the Resturant is closed to golfers for other functions. This Father’s Day I spent 500 bucks for a foursome, only to find out we could not use the Resturant because they had a Father’s Day special event. We had to leave the course and find a place to eat and drink and watch the conclusion of the US Open. Not the Father’s Day round of golf I was hoping for. The closest place is 20 to 25 minutes away.
Great Course, Well Worth it
Course was very difficult. Well worth the price for a bag of balls to practice with pre round, and not to mention the course is mesmerizingly beautiful from the greens to the tee boxes & everything in between.
Id say best spot to play golf at in northern virginia.
9/10 overall rating.
Great Course - Keep up with the group in front of you
Like all people playing golf, pace of play kills a courses' appeal, keep up your group in front of you - there was no reason for a 4:45 round of golf when the group in front of us was 3 holes behind. This is a great course, too many people think its an easy muni
Cart Path Only
Unfortunately it rained the night before our round and we were restricted to cart path only which is not good for some due to the hills
