El Prado Golf Courses - Butterfield Stage
About
El Prado Golf Course boasts two different 18-hole courses: Butterfield Stage and Chino Creek. Early in California's statehood, stagecoaches would make the 2,700 mile trek from St. Louis to San Francisco. The property used to be a stop on this trail, which is where the Butterfield Stage Course gets its name. It's the shorter of the two courses at 6,568 yards from the back tees. The course is flatter and more forgiving than Chino Creek, but it still has a fair amount of challenges that will test your skills. The layout has generous fairways, but watch out for the strategically placed bunkers lurking along the large, gently undulating greens. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. The wide open nature of the course can be forgiving but at the same time it will put your round at the mercy of the prevailing winds.

Regular player
I play El Prado regularly. About 2-3 times a week. El Prado is a great place to practice. Both course present some challenges to your game. The fairways and rough need some TLC in some areas, but it just makes you hit more pure shots. I would say that sand is needed badly in the bunkers. That would be my biggest complaint.
They have a policy not to let u play early if you are prepaid. We sat around for 45 minutes while no one was in the first tee.
Monday morning
Arrived early and was able to tee off sooner than our scheduled tee time.
Course is fun and challenging, greens were nice with manageable speed.
Most of the traps were in good condition a few were compacted and hard.
Only issue we had was our cart ran out of power after 14 holes, had to call in for a replacement.
Slow play
My only complaint is the slow play. It took our 3-some 4:45 to complete our round. Two groups ahead of us were 2 holes behind the group they were following. We were hoping a marshall would speed them up. The group of older men didn't even try to speed up. They needed encouragement to play a little faster. I understand that many businesses are understaffed but in a the golf business you need to keep the customers happy to get them to return. I was very disappointed with the pace of play.
The Pride of Chino
The difficulties that come with operating a golf course in Inland Empire, SoCal is no joke, yet the team at El Prado seems to keep working hard to present a quality product. Although it might not look like Augusta, it’s a beautiful track that keeps true to golf. No Gimmicky holes, no blind shot overlaps, just a classic and forgiving golf course. Definitely a course you can play multiple times a week!

Great Deal to Walk
Can't beat the weekday golf prices here! Especially when you are walking to play. They have two courses and both of them are $28 for regular tee times. Butterfield course is more wide open for variety of players from beginners to advanced players. Chino Creek course is more narrow and good for intermediate players to advanced players. All the staffs are very friendly and they always try their best to accommodate you. Many of the golf courses are now in horrible condition and over priced but here they haven't raised their price like others. I think they raised about $2 since golf boom during pandemic.... Butterfield course is better to walk because it's more of flat course. Chino Creek, you have to go up and down because it has several holes that are elevated and some downhills. I always thought they can do so much better by fixing their cart paths but if they do then the price wouldn't be the same. A lot of golf courses these days don't have cart girls driving around selling beverages during weekdays but they do. They also have a practice range where you can hit balls on the grass not synthetic mats. Only negative thing about this place is that practice range doesn't have canopies or covers. It will be a big plus if they have some shades. Keep up the good work everyone! Hope to play here for long time.
Love the course but the pace sucked!
We ended up skipping 4 holes. The pace was going on 6 hours! The men's club was causing the issue. They were in no hurry. Multiple calls from our group did nothing to speed up play. We were averaging 10-15 minutes between holes on the front nine. The back exceeded 20 minutes on the later holes! This course is fun and economical. However, it needs better course management.
Prado
Affordable golf course. Decent course condition. Will play again.
El Prado
Well where do I start, I have hit several drive in the center of the fairway and you would think by looking at it that I was OB. The course is in horrible shape, the fairway grass is not grass it consists of dirt and weeds.
Thank you for reviewing the course. Let us first start by apologizing for the poor experience you had during your visit. The current condition is by no means the standard we strive to achieve and are working diligently to improve the course. Thank you for playing and we hope to see you again soon.
Ben There
Been playing El Prado for 30 years. Averaging 2x a year. (No longer live in the area, but family does) Pace of play is great, fun course layout, easy for us to get to, and greens are usually in great condition. They've upgraded the restaurant - food was really good and affordably priced. Definitely will pay again.
