El Prado Golf Courses - Butterfield Stage

About
El Prado Golf Course boasts two different 18-hole courses: Butterfield Stage and Chino Creek. Early in California's statehood, stagecoaches would make the 2,700 mile trek from St. Louis to San Francisco. The property used to be a stop on this trail, which is where the Butterfield Stage Course gets its name. It's the shorter of the two courses at 6,568 yards from the back tees. The course is flatter and more forgiving than Chino Creek, but it still has a fair amount of challenges that will test your skills. The layout has generous fairways, but watch out for the strategically placed bunkers lurking along the large, gently undulating greens. Water hazards come into play on several holes as well. The wide open nature of the course can be forgiving but at the same time it will put your round at the mercy of the prevailing winds.

lots of dirt!
Sand pits are all hard packed dirt. Anywhere off the fairway is dirt.

Good value
Both El Prado courses are good values. Butterfield has much more 'hard pan' including the fairways. I think most golfers would love it if they allowed carts on this course up until noon instead of 10am.

Doesn’t facilitate old people
I got a tee time of 12:40. When I arrived there, they said I had booked walking only. I’m 68 years old so I prefer riding. I asked if I could rent a cart. They said walking only after 10 AM. There were over 30 carts lined up and they said that was for the Chino Creek course only.
So I asked if they had push carts. They were out of push carts. At my age, I can’t walk and carry my bag and bottles of water. So I left and lost my rewards that I used for the round. Also wasted my time.
they should accommodate seniors like us.
Today
I had an enjoyable round of golf. I liked the course and you can’t beat the price. What more could you ask for.

Don’t allow Carts for people who book the 18 hole
After 10am they don’t give the people playing 18 holes carts but only the people playing 9 holes. By the time you finish the back 9. You wasted so much time and it’s already getting dark when you come to finish the course.

Partial review
I have to first say I didn't actually play the course. The weather and fires in the area made the course unplayable upon my arrival. However driving up I past a lot of the course and it looked to be in horrible condition. Once again the wind was at least 20 mile per hour and visibility from smoke was minimul. However I could see brown grass everywhere. Equipment and building looked dilapidated. I wouldn't make the effort to come back here again. I was fortunate the conditions allowed me to get my money back because course deemed it unplayable that day.
How can you rate a course if you didn't play? You "drove by" and make an assumption that the course is in bad shape because there is some brown grass? LOL

Great Course for My Sons and I
El Prado is always my go-to course when I play with my three sons because the course isn't that difficult and offers different challenge levels to all of us. My only criticism is that since I pay for all of us, we had been playing under the twilight rate to save some money. But I don't believe that you have adjusted the twilight time, so it would be impossible for us to tee off at 3pm and finish 18 hours. I'm wondering if you plan to push back the twilight time anytime soon? Again, love the safety protocols and the course condition continues to improve. Thanks for some great work. David
Thanks for following up! Course condition apart from the greens was poor (some tee boxes are even slanted). Perhaps it was my misfortune, but the group in front of us was incredibly slow, and our round took close to 5 hours and would have taken longer if they hadn't abandoned the course after ~13 holes. Layout was okay - lots of range balls on the first few holes of the course we played (even on the fairway!). Again, perhaps my misfortune, but it didn't feel like a great value for me.

Practice round
If your like most golfers who need a practice round once in a while to try out a new swing or a new club, Butterfield Stage course is not crowded, the ride is a bit bumpy but if you can go out by yourself...priceless.
