Originally designed by Chandler Egan in 1932, the first nince holes takes you through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. Egan's nine takes you through an inland terrain and reflects much of the charm of an English rural course done in the old style.

The back nine was designed by Jack Neville, the original designer of the Pebble Beach Links. It opened in 1960, and is laid out in true links design over dunesland that approaches the sea.

Over looking the course is the Point Pinos Lighthouse. Built in 1855, it is the longest continuously operating lighthouse in California. It is a historical sentinel and picturesque landmark of the golf course.

A scenic tour of the dramatic coastline provides views of Lover's Point, Point Pinos, Crespi Pond and the natural dunesland at Asilomar. You will be enchanted by the abundance of natural wonders such as the plentiful Pacific Blacktail Deer, seals, sea lions, sea otters, pelicans and gulls.

Not impressed at all

Billed by many as a special course, I found Pacific Grove lacking. Fairways and tee boxes in poor condition. Tried it once. That's enough.

Ocean golf

The back nine are in the ocean and truly spectacular. Not the hardest or longest, but might be the most beautiful.

Beautiful ocean views from the course!

Beautiful ocean views from the course! Lots of wind on the back 9 nine which is near the ocean. Saw lots of wildlife such as deers, monarch butterflies, a wolf, ravens & seagulls on the course. Dress warm even with the sun out.

Poor Man’s Pebble Beach is Fun to Play

We enjoyed playing Pacific Grove. We were paired w/two local guys who gave us tips and were just a lot of fun.

The three reasons for the 4 stars (not five):

(1) The fairway grass was hard to delineate from the rough. So you could be in middle of fairway and grass was pretty thick.

(2) Two par 5 holes were over 500 yards from the forward tees - 521 the longest - that’s just too long for shorter hitters to get on the green in regulation.

(3) Pace of Play - they let a foursome out in front of us who were sharing clubs and it really slowed them down. One of the men in our group hit into them on the seventh hole (by accident) and so lucky for us on the next hole they let us play through otherwise it could have been a five hour plus round.

Also, we wanted to eat at the Grill but they stop serving food at 3 pm. You can get drinks and bar snacks after 3 pm.

All that being said, I recommend this course. After 1 pm on weekend the rate was $55 and for a muni course w/the nickname “Poor Man’s Pebble Beach” it is worth the fee. It’s a fun course with lots of wildlife (deer) on the front nine and beautiful ocean views (and wind) on the back nine.
