Pacific Grove Golf Links
About
Originally designed by Chandler Egan in 1932, the first nince holes takes you through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. Egan's nine takes you through an inland terrain and reflects much of the charm of an English rural course done in the old style.
The back nine was designed by Jack Neville, the original designer of the Pebble Beach Links. It opened in 1960, and is laid out in true links design over dunesland that approaches the sea.
Over looking the course is the Point Pinos Lighthouse. Built in 1855, it is the longest continuously operating lighthouse in California. It is a historical sentinel and picturesque landmark of the golf course.
A scenic tour of the dramatic coastline provides views of Lover's Point, Point Pinos, Crespi Pond and the natural dunesland at Asilomar. You will be enchanted by the abundance of natural wonders such as the plentiful Pacific Blacktail Deer, seals, sea lions, sea otters, pelicans and gulls.

Okay course. 4 holes make this course what it is.
Very average course for the area aside from 4 of the last 9 holes that get close to the water. Even with a “Hot Deal”, this was not a great deal considering the course.
Always good, but....
Have not played at PG golf Links for about 5 months - course was the usual. Greens rolled true, played early so no wind. The only problem was on the back nine where we had a five some that turned into 6. I called the course and they had a marshal out there in 10 minutes! Great course, just hate slow play.
Great value in Monterey
Pacific Grove GC is one of the greatest value in golf. The course is always in great condition. Of course the ocean back nine takes your breath away with it's vistas. Played with a man from Rhode Island who was just awe struck by the course and cost to play. We will return again.
Best ocean views around
The course is challenging but forgiving. I’ve played this course several times and have seen deer on the course every time. The front side has tree lined fairways. & the back 9 has beautiful ocean views. The back side is a links style course including a breeze coming off the ocean. I highly recommend it.
great views
I had not played this course for many years so it was a pleasant surprise to see all the improvements made at the course. We almost cancelled our times due to the rather extreme winds from the previous day. I am glad we did not cancel. The course is rather short. under 6,000 yards from the tips but very playable and fun. The fairways were in great shape for a municipal course The greens in great shape but surprisingly firm and sneaky fast. for public play conditions.. the best part of the venue is the coastal views along most of the back side. I just wanted to sit and enjoy the views of the California coast.. As they say Very easy and relaxing course to walk. alas a good walk interrupted by a round of golf.
My four star rating is not the whole story
Who doesn't like to play the second (ocean) nine at Pacific Grove? I am always a little excited to book that course. In fact, I am playing there twice this week. The views are on par with some of the best that Spanish Bay and Spyglass have to offer...and at a fraction of the price. Plus the layout is just good fun. For these reasons, I rate it a four.
However, the greens were downright poor. Worst of all the courses I play in the Monterey Bay area. They are receptive and moderately paced, but they are diseased, lumpy, and untrue. It appears they do not roll the greens and that they are losing the battle with whatever is attacking or invading the grass on their greens. Else the course (fairways, bunkers, rough, and tees) was in good shape and was a kick to play...especially in those brisk winds. On many of the exposed holes, keeping the ball in play off the tee was a real challenge.
They need to fix the ends of the paved cart paths. Exiting the cart paths onto the fairway usually meant a string of potholes and a spine-jarring experience. This problem can and should be fixed.
I enjoy the course but you folks need to get working a bid harder on the conditions out there. Your greenskeeper should call in some expert advice. . Good luck.
"Babyish Pebble Beach"
This place is Amazing! I have played Pebble Beach twice and the back nine is very Pebble like. The front nine is like many courses in the area except for the greens, there are in GREAT shape all 18. The greens are true, about a 10. There was a marshall on the course, but the ladies and gentlemen know how to keep things moving. I got paired with two other amazing guys, and their name both was Mark. My round there was awesome, I was hitting my driver straighter and longer, but the approach shot stop me from shooting a very low round. I am not that used to playing in the wind so I missed a lot of greens with wedges. The course in not a very long course so with a good tee shot low rounds can be had.
The scenic back nine WOW! What a place to spend our anniversary.
Great conditions with an ocean view!
PG is always an enjoyable track. Course starts out out with two par 3's then a driveable par 4 on the 4th hole. Front nine is set in a tight wooded scene with several looks at the ocean from a few blocks above. Hole 9 is a 220 yard par three that plays directly into the wind.
The back 9 is set right on the ocean and winds around the lighthouse. Gone are the tree lined fairways of the front with sand dunes guarding the edges of the fairway. The beauty of being right on the ocean comes with a price, as the wind will now be a factor in almost every shot on the back nine.
Hole 17 is a short iron par 3 with the ocean directly on your left and a forced carry over a pond in front of the green. It doesn't get any more beautiful and fun than that!
Greens are small but roll smooth and are soft, easily holding approach shots. Fairways are in very nice shape as well. Tee boxes were a little thin on a couple of the par 3's but were divot free.
Customer service is great in the pro shop. Course does have a range and carts have a USB port for charging electronics but do not have GPS. Probably because GPS devices frequently don't work at this course. I believe it has something to do with interference from the lighthouse. Be prepared for your electronic device distance device not to work here.
Restaurant has a great view but that's the extent of it. Food is way overpriced and garbage.
Overall, PG is a super fun course at a very reasonable price.
Fun back nine
Greens had some sand maintenance which took a bit of the shine of a fun day. Short but challenging at sea level!
Poor Man's Pebble
A technical front 9 that winds through the neighborhood is followed up with a back 9 packed full of wonderful beach views and hilly fairways. Tough time from the rough whether it be the old growth trees on the front nine that impede your slightly inaccurate tee shots or the sun bleached white beach sand that makes up the the rough on the back 9. Well kept greens and clean amenities. You'll get your moneys worth at this affordable version of pebble beach.
Best Value
Played course with son who regularly shoots in low 80’s. Must say this course was about as much fun as we have experienced. We liked it so much that we went back and played again on 4/2. We will be playing Spyglass and Pebble the next two days. Can’t imagine how anyone could criticize this course. Greens not that fast but great shape. Beautiful!
